What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

I had the first day of Pre-exam, X-Rays and Surgery for placement of 2 dental implants. The first day went well as my 2 back molars were unrepairable. I was recommended by a dental clinic in San Diego. I felt very calm seeing how nice everyone was and how clean Liberty Dental Clinic was. Looking forward to my next step in the dental implant and crown procedures. Thank you so much Liberty Dental.

They are highly recommended for any dental workThayne, US, 21 10 21

Before arriving in Yuma, I talked to 3 or 4 different dental companies and talked to Alexis with Marietta dental solutions. He seemed so likeable and honest and answered all the questions I had. I arrived in Yuma Monday the 18th around 8 pm. Alexis called me shortly after I arrived and he asked if I wanted to schedule a time for the next day. I said sure and he scheduled me for 9:30 am Tuesday. I told him I had 2 days to do the work Monday night when we talked and he said no problem. I crossed the border and Alexis had a car waiting for me to bring me to the dental office. Within minutes I was filling out papers and went over to another location for X-rays. We went back to the clinic and they took me. Back and talked price and they started prepping me for 2 root canals and 3 crowns. The 2 guys that did the work was great, asking if I was in pain and spraying gout the mouth of course haha. Anyways the staff was awesome no waiting around. The crowns were out within a half hour and they feel great. They are highly recommended for any dental work. Thanks, Alexis and thanks to the staff.

I have had extensive dental work, many crowns. I have been a tooth grinder for most of my life and the many crowns Cesar Ruiz has done for me years ago are still holding strong with no problems. I am 54 and have had enough experience with dentists to know that Cesar cares about and does his work to a high level of excellence.

I can't say enough good about Dantics and Dr. Alejandro. He is skilled, empathetic, and truly caring. I did a lot of research before choosing the Dentics Clinic for my implants. Without a doubt, the best of everything as I had major work done, bone graft, 2 implants, crown and never had to take a pain killer pill. A week later all healed and feels great. Was impressed the next day to get a permanent crown on. Dr Jeorge even came in to see how all was and to check it out, how nice as he is very busy but has great talented staff and associates. I am from Canada and going there for many years.

Feel confident that this doctor will perform whatever you need with professionalism and compassionEd, Mexico, 13 07 22

Found this office and contacted them and was contacted next day with requested information. I made the appointment and was greeted both by the doctor himself as well as the coordinator. As far as the service, I had a root canal and crown done that went very well. The doctor performed the root canal with ease and I barely felt any pain, he answered all my questions, explained step by step what he was doing, and ordered and fit the crown and installed it the same day. The doctor is very nice and the office although looks average from the outside, was very clean and neat. I actually enjoyed this trip this time and have been going to a different dentist there previously, decided on a change. He is very nice and as I said, is neat and clean and I have no hesitation about going again. I don’t give reviews unless they are deserved and I don’t put reviews unless they are true. Feel confident that this doctor will perform whatever you need with professionalism and compassion. I also received a follow-up the next day asking how I feel and if everything is fine. I would also like to compliment the gentleman who coordinated the appointment. GOOD JOB.

Overall, I am very happy with the work doneOliver, US, 18 03 21

I recently spent 4 days in Los Algodones getting dental work from Dra Mayra Jimenez and Reny Dental. It was a great experience and I now have a full lower set of teeth, something I haven't had in decades. The practice is very professionally run, I would say to the same standards you would find in the US, super clean and with all the latest equipment and techniques. The staff all speaks English, which is important, if, like me, you can only speak a couple of words in Spanish. I am a very nervous patient, been putting the work off for years but Dra Mayra has a very calm and reassuring manner that went a long way towards keeping any anxiety down, she is also a perfectionist. I can't say that the procedures were painless, 7 root canals takes it out of you! but I was given sedatives and many shots of Novocain. The Town itself is an Interesting colourful place, lots of Hawkers selling all sorts of stuff but very safe. We stayed at the Cielito Lindo hotel, booking through Reny Dental gets a substantial discount, depending on how much work you get. In my case, I got 50% off the Hotel Bill. Overall, I am very happy with the work done. The doctor told me It could be up to a month for the pain to settle and at the 2-week mark, it has mostly gone. Getting used to new teeth and no partial denture has been a new experience. The price I paid for all my work was very reasonable, I would say around 35% of what I would have paid here in Salt Lake. Also, my smile is greatly improved, not the main reason I got the work done but I'll take the Movie Star teeth! I highly recommend using Reny Dental and will return to do my top teeth sometime in the future.

I normally have a great deal of dental anxiety, however I was totally at easeHolly, Luxembourg, 19 08 22

I was getting ready to do extensive travel and I had a crown fall out. I contacted Duo Dental, set up an appointment, and drove to El Paso. I parked at the Stanton street bridge, paid 50 cents and walked across the bridge. The Duo Dental Team promptly picked me up and we were at the office in minutes. They performed a thorough evaluation, a cleaning and X-rays. They discovered several cavities and chipped teeth. I agreed with the treatment plan. The doctors set to work, with one meticulously building the crown, while the other fixed my cavities and chipped teeth. They also made me 2 splints for my bruxism. I normally have a great deal of dental anxiety, however I was totally at ease and appreciated the care and gentle style of dentistry they practice. I was completely finish in a matter of hours. Ready to go on vacation. Without fear of a dental emergency. I highly recommend the team at Duo Dental. The cost was a fraction of the cost in my hometown. The trip to El Paso, by way of several spectacular Texas State Parks, was a great mini vacation. I highly recommend the Duo Dental team for your dental needs.

I was impressed with their ability to get all of the resources that they need readilyKen, US, 14 07 21

First of all, I was impressed with the cleanliness of Alberta Dental and their state of the art digital X-rays was amazing, and the personnel were helpful and very nice especially Grace, Luis and Brian. I was impressed with their ability to get all of the resources that they need readily (Drs, Dentists, Specialists, Labs). I don’t know why anyone and everyone wouldn’t want to come to Los Algodones for dental work). I had a right rear lower molar that was very tender, plus I had an upper right extracted 2-3 years ago, and I wanted an overall evaluation of my gums and teeth. So after Dr Alan Morales examined me, this is what he came up with: right rear lower molar is somewhat loose, because of bone atrophy, so 1st: root canal on a right rear lower molar, and deep cleaning then bone graft. We will need to heal, so come back in 4-6 weeks, when we will put 5 crowns in, 2 on the right rear lower, and 3 for an upper right missing tooth.

The procedure went well with no issuesBrian, US, 02 08 23

This was my first trip to Mexico for dental work. I was a little apprehensive not knowing the procedures of crossing the border. Turns out it was really easy, drive to the border, turn right into parking lot on Texas side. $2 to park and another $1 fee to walk into Mexico (.30 cents for return) Dentist office was a short walk away. Upon my initial exam, I was asked why I wanted a root canal when a filling would suffice the problem.....at the advise of my tech. I choose the $60 filling over the root canal, post, crown route my local dentist advised... The procedure went well with no issues. Very happy with the services received. Thanks Dental Artistry Dental Center

Dental Crowns $350 - $450
A dental crown is a cap-like restoration used to cover a damaged tooth. Crowns can give support to misshapen or badly broken teeth and permanently replace missing teeth to complete a smile or improve a bite pattern. They may be molded from metal, ceramic, plastics, or combinations of all three. They are cemented in place and coated to make them more natural looking. Historically, a variety of materials have been used as tooth replacements. The ancient Egyptians used animal teeth and pieces of bone as primitive replacement materials. More recently, artificial teeth have been fabricated from substances such as ivory, porcelain, and even platinum. With modern technology, high quality tooth replacements can be made from synthetic plastic resins, ceramic composites, and lightweight metal alloys.
Permanent Crown $350 - $450
Permanent crowns can be made from all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic. Metals used in crowns include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium) or a base-metal alloy (for example, nickel or chromium). Compared with other crown types, less tooth structure needs to be removed with metal crowns, and tooth wear to opposing teeth is kept to a minimum. Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down. Also, metal crowns rarely chip or break. The metallic color is the main drawback. Metal crowns are a good choice for out-of-sight molars. Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be color matched to your adjacent teeth (unlike the metallic crowns). However, more wearing to the opposing teeth occurs with this crown type compared with metal or resin crowns. The crowns porcelain portion can also chip or break off. Next to all-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look most like normal teeth. However, sometimes the metal underlying the crowns porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth. All-resin dental crowns are less expensive than other crown types. However, they wear down over time and are more prone to fractures than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns provide the best natural color match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. However, they are not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and they wear down opposing teeth a little more than metal or resin crowns. All-ceramic crowns are a good choice for front teeth. Temporary versus permanent. Temporary crowns can be made in your dentists office whereas permanent crowns are made in a dental laboratory.
Temporary Crown $30 - $50
A temporary crown is a provisional, short term restoration used in dentistry. Usually the temporary crown is constructed from a chemical-cure composite, although alternative systems using aluminium crown forms are occasionally used by practitioners. The temporary material is shaped by the dentist to form a tooth shape that protects the prepared tooth, prevents damage to the periodontal tissues (gums) and disguises the prepared tooth to a degree until the final, definitive restoration can be made by a dental technician. A temporary crown will usually be cemented in place with a soft temporary dental cement, such as Temp-Bond NE. This allows easy removal when fitting the definitve restoration. If a temporary crown becomes decemented, it is important that a dentist examine the patient as overeruption of the opposing teeth may prevent accurate fitting of the final crown.

I had been wanting a tooth implant for a while and was really hesitant to go to Mexico. After much discussion with my husband, I decided to go. Much to my surprise, it was not as difficult as I thought. We were there with Dr Ramos early one morning, had a 3D x-ray done a few blocks away and confirmed that I was a candidate for the implant. It took about 40 minutes for the whole procedure. I have gone for a 2 week follow up for removal of stitches and will return in 4 months for the abutment and after that crown. Very happy so far.
