What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Liberty Dental Clinic

(805) 804-5440 2273 Calle 2DA, Tijuana, 22000
Rating from 12 Reviews I did not feel that there was no language barrierBen, US, 14 Jul 18

Through internet search (after knowing that my prior dentist in Tijuana has a full schedule until July 20). I selected the 2 best clinics that can repair my 9 teeth for either implant or bridge. After having examinations by the 2 clinic dentists, I selected the Liberty Dental because of my personal feeling towards the dentist in terms of recommendation and honesty that I felt. The staff, especially Ric, are very kind and helpful. I did not feel that there was no language barrier. You know what? This is the dentist, Dr Omar Guevara, who I can strongly recommend you for your teeth health. I had my teeth treatment from the 2 dentists on two different occasions. After seeing Dr Guevara, he is the guy.

(805) 465-6061 Blvd Kukulcan KM 12.7 Zona hotelera, Cancun, 77500
Rating from 114 Reviews The treatment is of excellent valueAshlee, US, 22 Dec 16

So the treatment went really well. I received a crown over an existing root canal and I also got my lower wisdom teeth extracted. They do good work. The crown is fitting in nicely and after about of week my mouth after extraction is doing well. The treatment is of excellent value. So here is my story I had a root canal done, but my Dentist in the states refused to put a crown on the tooth because my upper wisdom tooth was pushing up against it. He told me I had to have it removed. I figured I'd get all of them removed but it was too expensive in the states so I went to Mexico. The dentist here was willing to put a crown on the tooth without removing my upper wisdom tooth. he reasoned and I agreed that that tooth may never come out and taking it out required cutting into the gum which would be risky. With that I got my lower wisdom out and the left my upper two. After a week I am feeling fine, my swelling has gone down and my crown fits perfectly. I did not receive anesthesia for my extractions because I just didn't want to be put to sleep. Having your wisdom teeth removed while awake and under nova cane is not comfortable but it was bearable and honestly not so bad. I appreciated the recommendations of the dentists and I feel I made the correct decisions. It's a great affordable place to get dental work. I also got my little brother some fillings for less money than if we were in the states with insurance. The experience was good. I am flight attendant so it's very easy for me to fly to another country in this case to have dental work done. The clinic is glamorous to say the least. Imagine a dentists office in a telenovela. The staff is very attractive and engaging and they all speak English. This clinic is very busy though and probably because it's caught on how affordable and good it is. My appointments were at night but that's because that's how busy it is and the staff is there all day working hard. The place is clean with shiny white appliances, mood lighting, music, and artsy design elements. If you're from the states is ten times better than any dentist office you've been to. Don't be nervous they've got it together if you have an appointment you have what you need. Give it a try.

As good as any dentistry work in the U.S. Everything explained to me through photos and discussion. Dentists great, assistants great. I had crowns put in and some oral sugery as well. I had absolutely no complications. The clinic was very clean. The personnel very attentive. Very nice lobby with big screen tv. The dental equipment very hi-tech and up-to-date. I reseached on the internet and Antonio called me and was extremely helpful.

Dentics Cancun

(805) 420-7220 Plaza Caracol, Boulevard Kukulcan Km. 8.5, L 326,, Cancun Zona Hotelera, 77500
Rating from 23 Reviews The dentist awesome, professional and yes, funny even during dental workPaula, US, 20 Jan 18

There are not enough good things I can say about Dr. Sanchez and her staff. My U.S. dentist had presented me a $8000 treatment plan. The work needed to be done and even with insurance, I could not get it all done. I didn’t know which ones to pick. Well, I got all of them and then some! I got 5 crowns, 2 root canals, 2 mouth guards, a laser whitening, and an awesome cleaning! Was the value good? You judge - I got all high-quality dental work and I do mean high quality. A trip to Cancun met some great people made some friends, flew R/T, stayed in a nice hotel and the airline upgraded me to first class, all for half of the cost. I would say it was a great value. I am a real person, I am 72 and very glad I came to Dr. Sanchez. I chose Dr. Sanchez after making my decision to come to Mexico for my dental work. I researched for a long time, called and spoke to office staff, read reviews, asked questions and ultimately decided to come to this Practice. There were many places to choose from and my choice was such s good one. Martin, the office “everything, the office couldn’t run without him”, the person picked me up at the airport, took me to my appointments and showed me my way around. aria, the dental assistant was knowledgeable and also an asset to the office. One of the nicest people I have met. Then, Dr. Sanchez, there is not enough space to describe her. I would use awesome, professional and yes, funny even during dental work. My last comment would address the condition of the office. I was an operating room nurse and know what cleanliness in medical settings is. I have repeatedly told people that even my high priced U.S. dentist did not have an office this clean, sterile or with any higher quality of modern equipment. As noted in other reviews, people are sometimes skeptical of going to an unknown country and person to have medical dental work: many people have asked me why? My reply is “sometimes you have to take a leap of faith”. You should consider taking that leap. It will give you good dental work and a good experience and you will be happy you took it.

Dr. Alejandro Benitez Dental Clinic

227 Avenida Benito Juarez, Nuevo Progreso, 88810
Rating from 83 Reviews Good experienceSandra, Houston, TX 77058, 16 May 16

3 implants, multiple crowns. The cost for all of the work I needed to have done was over $20,000 in the U.S. I did some research on the internet first & narrowed down my choices to which clinic had the best reviews. My dental clinic in the U.S. advised me to use an endodontist or an oral surgeon rather than a dentist in Mexico because of the complexity of implants. Opting for the strongest material, titanium, I paid a little more but overall about 25% of what I would've paid at home. This clinic is deceiving in size, since the waiting area is 1/3 of the overall length of building, then it continues to include probably 6 dental cubes, state of the art x-ray machine, and also the upstairs is where the crowns are made....it's quite the place. Dr. Alejandro Benetiz is fantastic, very skilled & caring. I also had great work from his dentist wife, and everyone who assisted in my two visits so far with particular thanks to Aby, the bi-lingual patient coordinator. I was a little nervous entering the town after walking over the border bridge, but the dental clinic is one of the 1st on the main street and the people of Progresso are very friendly.

Dental Crowns $170  -  $350
Zirconia Crown $350  -  $370
Zirconium crowns and bridges are so strong they can be used anywhere in the mouth. Zirconium crowns can withstand the biting pressure of the front teeth as well as back teeth grinding. The look of zirconium crowns and bridges is so close to natural teeth that it is hard to tell the difference and it is this quality which makes it very useable within dental work. Zirconium crowns can be fixed using traditional dental cements. Zirconium crowns have quickly become the preferred material for dental crowns. Zirconium is a very strong substance that can endure wear and tear of everyday use. When looking at Zirconium crowns from an aesthetic point it is clear and very similar to a natural tooth and reflects light the same way. This may be important if your new crowns are on the front of your mouth and it is particularly relevant in cases where the crown will be seen next to the natural teeth.

Rating from 43 Reviews For my dental needs I now only want to go to Nucleo DentalTimothy, US, 13 Aug 16

I've been going to Nucleo Dental for three years now. I had around 26 crowns and my wife had an implant. Their clinic is modern and new. Cost is roughly 40% to 50% of US costs, so BIG savings. I drive to the pickup point in El Paso where Edgar takes me over to Juarez (about a 15 minute drive), and later brings me back. You will need your passport and other identification. If I need to stay overnight, there is a nice hotel across the street from Nucleo Dental at a very reasonable price (which includes a light evening meal and a nice breakfast). The whole staff is extremely nice. The dentists my wife and I have seen are Dr. Ernesto Moran and Dr. Julio Nevarez. Excellent is the best adjective to describe them. I was apprehensive the first time, but Nucleo is now my preferred dental experience. For my dental needs I now only want to go to Nucleo Dental.

I had an appointment on Nov 11 to have 3 crowns replaced. Alma was my dentist. She was very professional and her assistant, Pepe did a good job as well. They stand by their guarantee. I would highly recommend this clinic. I chose this clinic because their salesman, Frank, called me less than an hour after I went on line to What Clinic and requested information from another Algondones clinic. Frank was very persuasive and not at all pushy. He explained the procedures and prices thoroughly.

Rating from 2 Reviews The team did a great job and felt they were very fair and knowledgeableJennifer, US, 06 Aug 18

All-on-six dental implants. From talking on the phone with Alex (who gave detailed info on our very invasive surgery) to a line-by-line itemized cost sheet we chose Biodental care. From the moment we parked right before the border we had someone drive us over to our hotel then the clinic, all three times, they even drove me to the pharmacy to make sure we got our correct meds. Alex and Antonio were very patient and helpful, Dr Trejo doesn’t speak English very much, but they were there to translate the whole time. We were very comfortable, also very nervous, but the team did a great job and felt they were very fair and knowledgeable. My partners mouth reconstruction just started (major surgery done and took 8 hrs!!!!!), we have 3 more trips and are confident in the team. We even recommended them to the family! Here’s to hoping for more of a smooth ride.

Rating from 10 Reviews He took his time to explain every phase of the procedureFloyd, houston, 10 Jul 18

I am the first to admit I have a fear of dentists. I had some old crowns that had broken. Recently lost a part of more than one tooth. But Dr Garza and his assistant my fear were set aside. His bedside manners and professionalism eased my anxiety. He took his time to explain every phase of the procedure. He was able to repair my neglected teeth and make me smile again. Dr Garza followed up with a phone call a few days after my procedure to check on my progress. I appreciate his dedication and compassion. My visit was excellent. I chose this clinic due to the years Dr Garza has been in practice and that he is a licensed Dental Doctor.

Washington Dental Clinics

(805) 793-1166 Ave. Revolución #1673, Tijuana
Rating from 11 Reviews The treatments was good valueAndrew, Vancouver, Canada, 23 Jun 17

Ok, so after many months of having my implant treatment completed, I’ve finally gotten round to posting a well-deserved review. I thought I’d wait until I had my new teeth for a while before I say anything about this place. The short story: Two molar implants as well as several crowns. This included needing two molar extractions of broken teeth, deep abscess removals, and subsequent bone grafts. In my book, pretty major work. Overall also, I thought the work was good value. The long story (follows): I had a really big abscess on my left lower molar, and another on my right lower molar. I recently found it was due to an allergy to milk. I had previously had root canal surgery on these teeth years before in the UK, several times in fact, but the abscesses always seemed to come back some months later, without me knowing milk actually caused it. I, therefore, needed to have implants to replace these since the teeth themselves were dead. I had moved to Vancouver, Canada and hadn’t gotten round to getting implants until the start of 2016. So this is how I came to read about a dental surgery in Mexico, and more specifically at Washington Dental Clinic. In terms of how the treatment progressed, I couldn’t be more impressed. I needed to fly down from Vancouver to Tijuana 3 times for the stages of treatment – In April 2016, September 2016 and finally April 2017, each time for 3 days. I really feel it was worth it for the top-notch treatment I received. In Vancouver, I am not impressed by how closed-off the dentists seem to be here. In Canada, you have to pay an examination fee before you can find out how much each dentist charges for specific procedures. Even then, there appears to be little to no competition here in Canada. Each dentist, knowing that customers don’t have the ability to compare prices (since prices seem to be a bit of a secret here), seemingly charges whatever it likes. At least that’s how I feel. I advise my friends to seriously think about flying down to Tijuana if they need major dental work. Yes, I was initially apprehensive about going alone to an odd, possibly dangerous, town called Tijuana on the Mexican border. However Tijuana (TJ) is actually huge and if, while on the streets, you don’t carry much cash or jewelry and don’t try to impress people like some do, it’s quite safe. I spent all my nights in TJ and ate great food, making great friends while there. PHASE 1 – April 2016: Back to my treatment: After living in 3 countries in the world including the UK and Canada, I feel that the treatment I got in TJ is the best. Because there is a lot of competition amongst dentists in TJ, it’s reasonable to expect customers get the best quality service at the best price. On day 1 at Washington Dental Clinics, I was first given a thorough examination, after which I was chauffeured to an x-ray business that took loads of x-rays of my jaw as well as 3-D scans. By the end of the day, I was told about what treatment was needed on my teeth and if I decided to go ahead when I should be there for the actual treatment the next day. The next day was a big surgery day. In the morning Dr. Bucio gave me 2 front teeth crowns. It took about 4 hours because once the teeth had been filed down, they needed to take have the crowns made. I’m still wearing these crowns after 14 months, and barely even notice them. They look and feel like normal teeth. In the afternoon Dr. Bucio and Dr. Pena went ahead and performed the extractions of my lower left and lower right molars. Big jobs because both teeth had been dead for 10 years after extensive root-canal treatment, and the lower-left molar was also cracked. Dr. Pena handled the left, it took about an hour but he eventually got all the pieces out. After that, he dug deeper and pulled out the abscess. - A vile yellow squid-like thing. Gross enough for me to thank God they took it out of me. Seriously, after you’ve seen that you’ll have a lot of respect for abscesses, they really don’t belong inside the body! Ask any cardiologist, they’re bad for the heart - Get it taken out! After that Dr. Pena did a bone graft with bone powder and stitched me up. Dr. Bucio then handled the right molar and very carefully extracted that. And after that, he pulled out an even bigger abscess! I didn’t even know I had it, yet there it was. - Urgh! Thanks to Edgar for convincing me to take that thing out! Again a bone graft was done and all was stitched up again. I think at the end of the afternoon all the dentists probably laughed about the whopper abscesses they pulled out of me. I, however, went back to my hotel room feeling pretty beaten up and hid there until breakfast the next day. - Probably a very normal activity after any surgery. I only felt a slight pain though. By the next day, I was up and running, ready to enjoy Tijuana! – After having a very soft breakfast at Tilly’s (Tell Victor who will know what you need) and for lunch a soft pasta or soup at Vittorio’s. By the way, days or weeks afterward it’s normal to have a few bits of powdered bone leak out, so don’t panic if that happens to you. Also, it’s amazing how fast and well the gum heals up, so don’t worry about the weird gum shape after surgery. PHASE 2 – Sept 2016: I went for 3 days for the implants to be put in place. If I have my terminology correct, the implants are the stems which drill into the jaw bone. After that, the dentist put healing caps over them. All went well without a hitch. No pain or discomfort afterward either, other than a bit of tightness that goes quickly. It is also weird knowing that you have titanium in your jaw now! Perfect for archaeologists in the future. PHASE 3 – April 2017: The final trip involved the placement of the placement of the crown abutments, i.e. the visible (tooth) part of the crown. This part of the surgery I felt was where the dentist took the most time. I think it’s important to give whatever time the dentist requires for this as it can’t be rushed because these are your final teeth. Loads of impressions were taken on Day 1 and finally, the implant abutments (teeth) were made. Dr. Guerrero dealt with all of this and was really very careful, I felt. By the end of the day, I had a comfortable pair of new molars which I’ve been using ever since! It’s great to be able to eat anything I want! In conclusion, if I ever need major dental work, I will be visiting Washington Dental Clinic again. Also, they told me the prices up-front, and they stuck to them, so you know what you are going to be paid on day 1, even if the treatment will take a year. Also, they were great with follow-up support. At various times I took photos of my teeth and emailed them to the dentist. By the next day, I had a comprehensive reply from my liaison who had consulted the dentist about my issue, so distance didn't really feel like an issue. I also felt I was treated honestly and not pressured to buy anything unnecessary. The establishment itself is a lovely place inside. In terms of cleanliness, it’s completely spotless. The staff is extremely welcoming, all smartly dressed, and about a third speak perfect English. Most of the dentists and nurses speak medium-level English but seem to feel more confident using their English translators, one of whom will accompany you most of the time and basically acts as your liaison. The liaison knows pretty much everything about the dental procedures, so there are no gaps in the communication. In fact, I thought my liaison might have been an ex-dentist himself perhaps. Overall Washington Dental Clinic is a friendly place. There’s a TV with the latest films on it for waiting for customers to watch. There are also free drinks whenever you like, although I did find it a little odd that many of the free drinks are soda drinks, loaded with sugar, kind of opposite to what I’d expect to see a dentist. Also what I don’t understand is the staff occasionally have the drinks as well, yet all of them have perfect teeth. - Why do Mexicans seem to have such perfect teeth?? The reception area also has clean bathrooms. If you forgot to brush your teeth, they’ll give you free brushes and tooth paste to use there. Also, I found the location of the clinic to be useful because it’s right next to Vittorio’s, an Italian restaurant. Italian food includes nice soft pasta – Perfect for eating after you’ve recently had major dental surgery and can’t chew anything! Minestrone soup is good too! Other than being a customer, I am not connected to Washington Dental Clinic whatsoever, nor am I earning any commission or income of any kind from this review. However, a pasta at Vittorio's would be welcome if ever I fly down there again.

Rating from 7 Reviews A great deal for the work we had doneRich, US, 17 Mar 18

This was our first visit for implants. I had 2 implants and one crown. My girlfriend had 2 teeth extracted and 2 implants for her lower partial. We were treated very well. Everyone was professional and informative. Answered all our questions. The best staff you could ask for. Eric, Lucy and Natalie are great! All the nurses that assisted the dentist were fantastic too. The clinic was clean and organized. All the staff was helpful and made us feel at ease. Great location for our first visit to Tijuana in many years. I paid $2750 and my girlfriend paid $2900 - a great deal for the work we had done! We have a few more visits to complete the work and look forward to seeing Lucy, Natalie and Eric! I highly recommend Revolution Dental Care

Dental Crowns $225  -  $400
Dental Crowns We offer two kinds of materials:1) PFM (Porcelain Fused to Metal) Crown - $225 each2) Zirconia (Metal Free) Crown - $400 each Look under PFM crown or Zirconia Crown for more details.
PFM Crown up to $225
PFM crowns are a hybrid between porcelain and metal crowns. Initially a metal shell is prepared which can fit perfectly over the concerned tooth. Then a porcelain veneer is fused on the metal shell which gives the crown a natural looking appearance. METAL DOES NOT SHOW AT ALL.A PFM (Porcelain Fused to Metal) crown is a cap that is tooth shaped. It covers a particular tooth to re-establish its size, shape, appearance and improve its strength. When the crown is cemented, it completely encases the visible portion of the tooth. They look just like a natural tooth and last for about seven years. Sometimes, they last up to forty years.
Zirconia Crown up to $400
ZIRCONIA or METAL FREE Crowns are the highest in crown quality and aesthetic. Zirconia is gentle on the nerves since it transfers heat and cold more slowly than crowns made of metal. The zirconia material is biocompatible, meaning that it is safe to stay within your mouth for a long period of time. There is no need to worry about any adverse reactions from your body because it is not rejected by the human body. Due to the Zirconia's light translucent color, there are no black margins in case of age-related receding gums, as this is frequently the case with metal restorations. Due to the extreme hardness and high density of the material, it withstands the highest biting force making them more durable.
