What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

The procedure was painlessThomas, US, 01 01 20

Excellent service. Went in for a broken molar and they said they could begin the fix immediately. I was given three repair options. I chose the least expensive because no one was ever going to see it in the back of my mouth. Everything was explained along the way. The procedure was painless. I came back after two weeks (they offered a much sooner appointment, but I was too busy) and they installed the replacement crown. The facilities are very clean and the staff is very friendly. There is some parking in front and there is also a large public parking structure on the same side of the street about 140 meters to the north. I highly recommend Revolution Dental Care.

Dental Crowns $175 - $325
A Dental Crown is a cover, a cap, that is used to restore the size shape and function of a tooth. There are a variety of reasons why a patient may need a dental crown such as a cavity that is too large, damaged tooth, protect tooth after a root canal, discolored or badly shaped tooth and improve smile. We offer three different materials for crowns: Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crowns, All Porcelain (Jackets), and Zirconia Crown.
Temporary Crown up to $100
A Temporary Crown is a cap that is placed to protect a natural tooth or implant until permanent crown is made.
PFM Crown up to $175
Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crowns are a hybrid between porcelain and metal crowns. Initially a metal shell is prepared which can fit perfectly over the concerned tooth. Then a porcelain veneer is fused on the metal shell which gives the crown a natural looking appearance. METAL DOES NOT SHOW AT ALL. PFM Crowns are $200 each.

I couldn't be more pleasedMiles, Canada, 18 11 20

Before I begin, readers need to know that my family, friends, and associates know me as a chronically grumpy, cranky, loud critic. I've never been accused of handing out compliments lightly. Years ago, my mouth, from what I was informed had absorbed some rare bacteria and become destroyed. It eventually became what can only be described as a "toxic dump." Not being wealthy, I researched (all-on-four implants for upper/lower) where I live, in Canada, the US (I'm a dual citizen), Argentina, Vietnam, Australia, etc., and of course, Mexico. I was extremely disappointed. I was evaluated locally with X-rays, etc., but then I'd be led into a tiny booth, and clearly, it was like I was buying some overpriced used car with not even a written statement of what I was going to receive. The obscene cost and their emotionally manipulative strategies were just plain offensive. I have modest savings. But mostly, I have no time for people I don't find trustworthy. I began communicating with multiple dental clinics in CR (Costa Rica). 'One clinic stood out like a "four-leaf clover" -- Urzola Dentistry. The administrator went back and forth with me by email, answering very tough questions. He was straight up, no-nonsense, honest, and after a week or so, we came to a detailed agreement. After flights, accommodations, travel insurance, and lots of rigamarole, I was met, as the clinic insisted, by someone with my name on a sign at the CR airport - 'good thing because San Jose driving is an "adventure." I smartly reserved a rental car for my third day. The very friendly driver took me to my accommodations that I made certain were within 15 minutes of the clinic. The next day, I'm picked up again, and we arrive at the tall building across the street from San Jose stadium. The building security only allows medical personnel or patients. Everyone entering is also required to follow strict medical measures for the safety of all. I think, "Hmmm. 'A good start." The driver escorts me up to the clinic. A wonderful lady, Adriana greets me. Shortly after, a man in scrubs comes out and introduces himself. Within seconds, I wish this guy was my next-door neighbor. He's real - genuinely friendly. No BS. It's Doctor Urzola. He takes me into the surgery room, and I get a detailed, thorough run-through of the next day/week schedule. He answers every pesky question I have. I am getting more relieved. Maybe, this won't wind up being something I deeply regret. I meet his very courteous, obviously very competent assistants, the same Adriana, and also Francheska. All three are making me feel more confident right away. It's not some Kumbaya. Everything is in the same building. Yes, just like the commercials you see on TV for other implant companies, the ones that charge a fortune. The Anesthetist prefers I not only not eat anything but also no fluids for 12 hours. It's unusual, and yet, again, I'm quite impressed. My medical safety is their first priority. 'Excellent. The next day I'm picked up and arrive for surgery. All the equipment is completely state of the art. Without even asking, Doc Urzola shows me my three-dimensional X-rays. Crazy accurate. And then, he demonstrates how he can take every single section of both upper and lower jaws where he is able to know exactly where he can place the metal inserts. He explains, while I watch, what length/width of insert he can choose for each particular section - the lines he draws display minute measurements. I have taught complicated software at a major University in Canada. I see Dr Urzola show off this software, specifically with my 3D image, and I am utterly impressed. The jaw inserts are what the implants will be secured to. It's time. I am monitored, with all equipment throughout that you would find in any hospital - pulse-ox, BP, etc., by the Anesthetist who gives me sedation. This is when the Doc and his team do what they do - focus like a laser and do their magic. I like professionals who know what they’re doing and just use the years of experience, along with a clear commitment to complete the mission. For a sceptic like me, I know I am in excellent hands. When done, a couple of hours or so, I am ready to chill and driven back to my accommodations. There's a reason for that. Don't believe that nonsense on TV commercials of "done in one day." This dental clinic intelligently spans the first process over 4/5 days. It's normal to go through a few days of some swelling. The Doc has gone over with me what antibiotics supplied (if needed), mild yet quite efficient pain killers for a few days. 'Normal. He's very detailed. Trust him. Follow his advice. The next day I discover, to my delight, examples of the prosthetics - teeth. They are stunningly natural-looking. Doc Urzola works with me closely, and he was right to convince me on a specific shade that matched my skin colour, and so forth. Perfect. A couple of days later, I get a temporary implant put in. Amazing. I get the next week off, head to the coast at a beautiful guest house, then come into the clinic on my airline travel back day for a final check and any adjustments - some minor grinding to get the "bite" at a premium condition. All included. I am back in four months; once my jaw bone has naturally merged with the inserts. At that point, new impressions are made; then, I will have the permanents. The permanents are exactly the same ultra-high, even stronger quality that you will find anywhere in the world at any price. I know. I have experienced Dentures. I wouldn't wish them on any person. And if you look closely at Denture costs and the constant adjustments; the Urzola clinic can deliver actual implants for about the same price (completely different, comfortable, no gagging, adhesives -- you can actually taste the food, etc.). Dentures can be a nightmare. So. Did I find that I saved tens of thousands of dollars and yet, discovered the proverbial, "You get what you pay for?" No way. I got the best, dignified communications, safe medical care, precise procedures, patient care, stunning workmanship, and ultimately, top-quality prosthetic elements. I couldn't be more pleased. I also, on my time off there, discovered the people of Costa Rica. No, I didn't do something stupid like park my rental car in a back alley and walk out there alone in the middle of the night. Uh, no! You nor I would do that in whatever country you live in -- right? I walked in CR neighbourhoods. I drove slowly (respectful of people/dogs/cats in busy small streets – the local's notice) – I said hi to complete strangers outside some tiny market, and all I found was the most hard-working, friendly, and helpful people I have ever met. I was greeted back with a big smile - and then, with my pathetic Spanish and hand signals, they would lead me to something I wanted to buy. I never ever once felt afraid in Costa Rica. The CR people, "Ticos" are one of a kind. Unique, hospitable, helpful, and also, quite funny. They love a good laugh! The point? I'm not writing here that Urzola Dentristy is excellent, but of course, Costa Rica is a scary place, so be afraid. NO! Exactly the opposite. Dr Urzola, his team – Adriana and Francheska, administrators, including the Anesthetist, Lab technicians, are people I sincerely like and respect; I also trust them implicitly. I can't wait to get back in four months. And there's a bonus. I get to be among the Ticos again, with my “permanent” smile back. "Pura Vida!"

My full restoration has left me with a beautiful smile and renewed self-confidenceSean, Costa Rica, 19 03 19

I have had two trips to Star Dental. My first trip lasted 2 weeks and during that time I was evaluated by Dr Sevilla and had an implant, 2 root canals and crown lengthening. I was fitted with a set of temporary crowns and then returned home after 2 weeks. I had a severe case of bruxism and the evaluation period with the temporary crowns was needed to determine my wear patterns. I was quite happy with the work done by Dr Sevilla and the specialists, an Endodontist and Periodontist, who were brought to the office to facilitate the additional procedures. After healing for three and a half months back in Denver, Colorado, I returned for the completion of my full mouth restoration. I had final crowns made, all the occlusion adjustments necessary made, and a new night guard made for my protection. My full restoration has left me with a beautiful smile and renewed self-confidence!

I'm a retired Law Enforcement Commander and I can tell you that if you are thinking of utilizing Dr Gadea's services, you have made an excellent choice. I researched and researched before selecting Dr Gadea. Frankly, it took me just over a year before I decided to take the risk For me, it was a huge risk. No dental insurance at all and certainly not the money to have the work done that I knew I needed. I corresponded with Dr Gadea and his office coordinator Gaby numerous times before making my decision. I sent emails to former patients and even spoke with some on the phone about the services they received. Each time, Dr Gadea came out on top. So, what did I have done? How about 6 root canals redone, two new surgical root canals, a five tooth bridge, three crowns and my bottom teeth received several bondings and cosmetic improvements. I must add that Dr Hernandez (Endodontist) at the clinic did all of my root canals including the surgical root canals. Dr Gadea and Hernandez are perfectionists, the best Dentists I have ever had and frankly, much better than any I have had in the USA. Dr Gadea also offers a warranty on his work and his word is his bond. I couldn't be happier.

I felt no pain from the local anaesthesia and the aseptic precautions were thoroughAnonymous, Depoe Bay, 05 09 18

I went to Dr Moreno’s practice to get an implant and crown for a tooth that had broken off at the gum line. I hadn’t been to Tijuana in 40 years so I was a bit apprehensive about finding my way to her practice. My concern was misplaced as I was met by Dr Moreno shortly after crossing the border. After being introduced to her very pleasant staff Dr Moreno proceeded to pull the root of the broken tooth and place the implant. I felt no pain from the local anaesthesia, the aseptic precautions were thorough and biopsies were taken to ensure the procedure would be successful. My experience at the Dental Implant Center was what I would expect at any Dental practice in the states in terms of professionalism and care. It was much less than I expected in terms of monetary cost, almost half of what I was quoted where I live. Even with airfare, rental car and meals I saved a considerable amount. I will definitely see Dr Moreno again for more dental work as needed.

I had 8 teeth removed and my wife had 21 crowns, 4 root canals and 4 posts. These people are great. Appreciate to be able to talk to the owner and her husband directly. They own the building and are quite concern about how you are doing. I was fortunate to hook up with one of the guys when you come it and he directed me to her office. Price is always a concern and they are very competitive. I am not new to Los Algodones and recommend this office above all. Family owns the building and reputations is important to them. When we arrived, they took us in immediately and assessed our needs. They gave us options and also their suggestions. Their suggestions were correct. We are quite pleased and plan on going back in March as a follow-up visit which they almost insisted with no charge. They want to make certain everything is correct. We spent 4 days there getting all the work done. Compared to US prices, it was almost one-fifth of what we were quoted in Tampa. They are very personable. Please give them a chance and do yourself a favor.

The clinic went above and beyond what would normally be expectedEldridge, US, 15 05 18

I had performed a refurbishment of a nearly 30-year-old implant supported Bridge and the finishing work ( 2 crowns and abutments ) of two newly placed implants. The new implants were placed by Dentics 4 months ago. At the time of the new implants, a bone graft procedure was also performed. This was not my first procedure with Dentics and I have had multiple members of my family treated there. All members of my family received outstanding care and work. We think of the Dentics staff as extended family. The clinic went above and beyond what would normally be expected by sourcing the parts and tools needed for repair of a 30-year-old implant supported bridge all the way to Brazil. Over the years the porcelain associated with the bridge became worn and fractured. By repairing the bridge the clinic literally saved me thousands of dollars. Now the refurbished bridge is as good as new! All work received by me or other members of my family is always of the highest standard. My highest recommendation without any reservation.

Outstanding Care. Great prices. I’ve had bad experiences with dentists since childhood. I have high pain tolerance but high resistance to medication too. I explained my fears and the staff at Navarro Dental understood and immediately put me at ease. Dr Karla was thorough and explained my 3 broken teeth would need 3 crowns and 2 Root canals. Quoted me $1400 for all the work including the better quality Zirconium crowns. The work was performed Monday in approximately 2 hours and the crowns installed Tuesday. We were on the road home by noon. No pain, no discomfort. Clean office, friendly staff, they also cleaned my wife’s teeth for free. 5-year warranty on the crowns. Can’t beat that. Dental Crowns $350 - $400
A dental crown is a cap-like restoration used to cover a damaged tooth. Crowns can give support to misshapen or badly broken teeth and permanently replace missing teeth to complete a smile or improve a bite pattern. They may be molded from metal, ceramic, plastics, or combinations of all three. They are cemented in place and coated to make them more natural looking. Historically, a variety of materials have been used as tooth replacements. The ancient Egyptians used animal teeth and pieces of bone as primitive replacement materials. More recently, artificial teeth have been fabricated from substances such as ivory, porcelain, and even platinum. With modern technology, high quality tooth replacements can be made from synthetic plastic resins, ceramic composites, and lightweight metal alloys.
Permanent Crown $350 - $450
Permanent crowns can be made from all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic. Metals used in crowns include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium) or a base-metal alloy (for example, nickel or chromium). Compared with other crown types, less tooth structure needs to be removed with metal crowns, and tooth wear to opposing teeth is kept to a minimum. Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down. Also, metal crowns rarely chip or break. The metallic color is the main drawback. Metal crowns are a good choice for out-of-sight molars. Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be color matched to your adjacent teeth (unlike the metallic crowns). However, more wearing to the opposing teeth occurs with this crown type compared with metal or resin crowns. The crowns porcelain portion can also chip or break off. Next to all-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look most like normal teeth. However, sometimes the metal underlying the crowns porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth. All-resin dental crowns are less expensive than other crown types. However, they wear down over time and are more prone to fractures than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns provide the best natural color match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. However, they are not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and they wear down opposing teeth a little more than metal or resin crowns. All-ceramic crowns are a good choice for front teeth. Temporary versus permanent. Temporary crowns can be made in your dentists office whereas permanent crowns are made in a dental laboratory.
Temporary Crown $30 - $50
A temporary crown is a provisional, short term restoration used in dentistry. Usually the temporary crown is constructed from a chemical-cure composite, although alternative systems using aluminium crown forms are occasionally used by practitioners. The temporary material is shaped by the dentist to form a tooth shape that protects the prepared tooth, prevents damage to the periodontal tissues (gums) and disguises the prepared tooth to a degree until the final, definitive restoration can be made by a dental technician. A temporary crown will usually be cemented in place with a soft temporary dental cement, such as Temp-Bond NE. This allows easy removal when fitting the definitve restoration. If a temporary crown becomes decemented, it is important that a dentist examine the patient as overeruption of the opposing teeth may prevent accurate fitting of the final crown.

I had a broken crown removed and replaced, teeth cleaned and whitened. Could not be more pleased with the professional, caring, gentle treatment I received. Efficient, friendly, spotless, professional.

Dental Crowns $250 - $400
1) What are dental crowns? A crown isa type of dental restoration that fully cups over that portion of a tooth thatlies at and above the gum line. Once itsbeen cemented into place, a crown, in effect, becomes the tooths new outersurface. 2) What purpose do crownsserve? Crowns are one of dentistrys most versatile restorations. They offer a way to repair and strengthen damaged teeth. They alsoprovide a way to improve a tooths appearance, including color, shape and evenapparent alignment.
Gold Crown $600 - $900
Porcelain Crown from $350
Some dental crowns are fabricated in a manner where their full thickness is porcelain (dental ceramic). These crowns can possess a translucency that makes them the most cosmetically pleasing of all of the different types of dental crowns. Although they can be very life like in appearance, the overall strength of all-porcelain dental crowns is less than other types of crowns. While they can be a good choice for front teeth, due to the hefty chewing and biting forces that humans can generate, all-porcelain dental crowns may not be the best choice for back teeth. Your dentists judgement will be required on this point.
