What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

I won't go any place else now that I've received this excellent careGerald, US, 12 04 23

Vivianne was great, communicated very patiently and went way beyond the usual service. Two implants and a new upper denture were all very well done and she made sure I was completely satisfied before she let me leave, taking the extra time to do some final adjustments so they all fit perfectly. I won't go any place else now that I've received this excellent care.

I could not be happier, plus the cost was reasonable and within my budgetDOUGLAS, Mexico, 04 07 20

I recently visited Dr. Altamira's Laser Dental Clinic (first-time visit) and was treated by Dra. Patricia J. Carrillo. My visit was for a cleaning and examination. I'm 67 years old and have visited clinics regularly my adult life, this Clinic is 1st Class in professionalism, cleanliness and state of the art dental equipment. Dra. Patricia J. Carrillo, during the examination, discovered 3 cavities, 2 side by side on my upper jaw and 1 in my lower jaw, same side. I was rescheduled two days later for the fillings. Dra. Patricia did an excellent job on my teeth, she transformed the way my upper teeth look where the cavities were. She was able to match the fillings to the natural colour of my teeth. I could not be happier, plus the cost was reasonable and within my budget. Thank you for making me smile a little bigger.

I have never been so relaxed during proceduresDenise, Canada, 03 03 20

I can't say enough about Dr Sandra de Alba and her staff. In addition to her amazing skill are her compassion and kindness. I had 7 crowns done, whitening and fillings are done. I have never been so relaxed during procedures. We were staying in Cabo San Lucas and they even came and got us. My husband also had a root canal, a crown and fillings done. We paid about 1/4 to 1/3 what this work would have cost in Canada. We will go back every year. She's just wonderful!

My time spent with her was efficient and I love her beautiful methods of dentistryShare, US, 02 07 21

I began my dental treatment with Dr Rosy 6 months ago, she was recommended by my daughter. I needed a lot of work, including implants, a tooth extracted and caps. There was never any pain, Dr Rosy is gentle and thorough. My time spent with her was efficient and I love her beautiful methods of dentistry. Her staff is great too! She is wonderful!

Dental Crowns
Because porcelain crowns cover your entire tooth, they often provide good solutions for severe problems i.e. a bad fracture, a large filling, a tooth that has had root canal treatment, and in situations where one or several teeth are missing. When teeth cannot be saved, dental implants and bridges are a great option to replace missing teeth. As with other techniques, crowns can correct a wide range of problems. They are durable and strong, so replacements are needed less often. The difference between crowns and laminates (or porcelain inlays) is that more tooth structure is removed. This is required to allow adequate space for the restorative material to have appropriate strength, esthetics... and healthy gum contour. The types of crowns that are commonly used are: 1.Porcelain fused to metal 2.Porcelain jacket crown 3. 100% Porcelain and Art Glass We recently were able to attract one of the finest dental laboratories in Mexico City to move to Los Cabos to work exclusively for us. They make a perfectly natural looking finished tooth. You will have a beautiful new smile with our crowns.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are an effective, safe and predictable solution to the problems resulting from missing teeth. Many patients report exciting benefits from dental implants. Replacement teeth that look, feel and function similar to natural teeth improved taste and appetite, improved cosmetic appearance, the ability to chew without pain or gum irritation, and improved quality of life. Implant procedures are complex and may take 6 to 9 months to complete requiring a second visit to the clinic months after the preliminary work is completed in order to give time for the bone to heal and integrate with the implant receptor or base. Implants are not for everyone and our dentists can assist you when deciding between implants, bridges or partials.
