What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Terrific experienceLee, Mexico, 09 03 16

My Wife and I each have had teeth cleaning, fillings, and crowns with excellent results. While having the work done each of the dentists communicates in a way that the patient is not experiencing any discomfort. We have told many friends (in Mexico and US) about our terrific experience at such a great value with extremely competent dentists in a new office with the latest equipment. We heard about them from talking to other guests at Los Tules resort (within walking distance).. Dr. Benjamin and Dr. Raquel are personable people, We always look forward to our appointments because we have been treated so well for several years and know that whatever dental work that is needed will be done very well and expediently. Our dental work at this Clinic is the best that we have experienced in 75 years of dental care. We could not recommend them more highly. . .

The staff was very helpful and pleasantMark, US, 18 11 18

I had two implants during my visit with Dr Alberto Hernandez which came out great. The jaw is still healing but I am eager to return in 6 months for the crown fittings. The staff was very helpful and pleasant. Did not ever think I would look forward to seeing a dentist but now I do.

Dental Crowns $440 - $550
One-Price for Porcelain over Metal Crowns including x-rays, temporaries, and build-ups if necessary. Because porcelain crowns cover your entire tooth, they often provide good solutions for severe problems i.e. a bad fracture, a large filling, a tooth that has had root canal treatment, and in situations where one or several teeth are missing. When teeth cannot be saved, dental implants and bridges are a great option to replace missing teeth. As with other techniques, crowns can correct a wide range of problems. They are durable and strong, so replacements are needed less often. The difference between crowns and laminates (or porcelain inlays) is that more tooth structure is removed. This is required to allow adequate space for the restorative material to have appropriate strength, esthetics… and healthy gum contour. The types of crowns that are commonly used are:1.Porcelain fused to metal quality. 2.Porcelain jacket crown 3.100% Porcelain and Art Glass.Porcelain
Temporary Crown $200 - $300
Temporary crownsTemporary dental crowns are usually cemented into place using "temporary" cement so they can be removed easily at the time of your next dental appointment. Because this cement is not as strong as other types of dental cement, your dentist will probably suggest to you that you take some precautions so not to dislodge your temporary crown.Resin crownsA resin crown is made from a special mixture of microscopic particles and cosmetic dental resin. The particles resemble tiny pieces of glass mixed into the resin, which is then cured to harden and strengthen the compound.Zirconia Crowns:Zirconia is the best material available for bridges and for creating a strong translucent tooth that rivals all-porcelain crowns. Zirconia crowns are significantly less expensive than all-porcelain crowns, and about the same price as gold-based metal-porcelain crowns (slightly higher than stainless steel). Also, because zirconia substrates can be milled with a laser milling machine, the substrates tend to fit better and are less labor-intensive than either a metal-procelain or all-porcelain solution, providing a superior product with a quicker turn-around at a lower cost.
Gold Crown $500 - $700
Gold crowsThe classic metal dental crown is one made of gold, or more precisely a gold alloy. Over the decades a variety of different metal alloys have been used in making dental crowns. Some of these metals are silver in color rather than yellow like gold
