What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

SmileLux

Rating from 4 Reviews I was a person, was always treated with kindness, respect, and friendshipAlan, UK, 04 05 18

On my first visit to the SmileLux office at Milton Keynes, I was greeted by smiling faces, offered a drink, and guided to the comfortable waiting area. I knew I was somewhere special when I found magazines on the table that were all current and even better, one was about food. I relaxed immediately. I was about to embark on a two-year journey wearing Invisalign retainers for 22hrs every day. I must admit that it felt like an impossible task as I was sure that I either ate or drank for much longer than that every day. Also, I was initially concerned how it might affect my speech. However, it soon became routine and I got so used to having them in that my speech was unaffected and they became part of the daily routine rather than something to be endured. They were just a part of life. My appointments with Sunil Hirani were unlike any previous visit to the dentists or the doctors or, as I will shortly come to, the hospital. I never once felt like anything less than a complete person while at SmileLux. I wasn’t a set of teeth or a problem to be fixed. I was a person and was always treated with kindness, respect, and friendship. It sounds obvious but it isn’t always the case. So, weeks passed and road marks were crossed as I completed six months, then 9, then a full year. Each set of aligners is numbered, so I counted them off month by month seeing the numbers rise. I was getting close to the end, number 42 out of 50, when things changed. I found that I had cancer. Actually, I had two – both apparently unrelated yet both in close proximity. One in a tonsil (Left) and one in the thyroid (also the left node). Two at once – wow, I was special at last. Clearly, with radio and chemotherapy on the horizon I would not be able to keep wearing the retainers full time so, after consultation with Sunil, it was decided that things could go on hold and I would keep wearing the current aligner overnight three or four times a week to keep things in position. Interesting times followed, during which I learned a number of interesting things about my treatments and a few more interesting things about myself. I could cope. In fact, I coped exceptionally well and went through my treatments with barely any concern. Chemotherapy, which I approached with some misgivings, having heard ‘stories’, turned out to be fine. I didn’t react badly to the chemicals used and actually felt better after a day’s treatment than I did at the start. Radiology gave my neck a suntan you wouldn’t believe! I can only assume that I was just very lucky. Things were detected in time, removed and the area treated. I had a session of Radio-iodine treatment as a ‘mopping-up’ measure, which involved me taking a tablet brought to me on a trolley and encased in a very heavy lead container. This is one of the ‘interesting times’ I mentioned. Cool, maybe I would glow in the dark. Apparently, some people thought they did but it was just the LED on the fire detector in the bathroom that caused that eerie effect when the light was turned off. Oh well, no superpowers then. After over a year of treatments and with nothing further, apart from check-ups, on the horizon, we decided it was time to go back to the aligners and I finally moved on to number 43. As always, appointments at SmileLux, were something to be looked forward to rather than something to feel trepidation about. It meant getting the next set in the number sequence. Once again, I was a person and treated almost as a family member. It was never anywhere to be afraid of going. Aligner numbers started to rise again and today I finally handed in number 50 along with much smiling and, a real surprise, a bottle of champagne and a congratulations card presented to me by the SmileLux team. I was always a bit self-conscious about my teeth, particularly the front ones at the top as they were quite V-shaped. As a child I recall my mother telling me that I had ‘gravestone’ teeth, as they tilted over in every direction. It was a bit of a joke and treatments of the type I had just completed simply weren’t available or just not an option. I lived with my teeth for 65 years, a time I thought to be far too long to do anything about it, but I was proven to be wrong. Two years, 50 aligners, with a bit of a gap for interesting things to happen, and I couldn’t be happier. Was it worth it? Yes! Undoubtedly. And cancer? Well, I have my regular check-ups and the ‘C’ word (Cured) won’t officially be used for a few more years, but it all looks very good. Just like my teeth. Thank you, guys. The best! Recommended by my regular dental surgery in Bedford.

Rating from 41 Reviews I may not have won X factor , but i left with the Wow factorFrank, Ireland, 06 11 17

Having first visited Cavehill Dental Care 20 years ago this year , where i had some serious dental implant work done by Dr. Martin MacAllister [ a bridge plate and 6 abutments inserted into my top gum line bone ].6 months later my porcelains were attached and i was very happy to have permanent teeth again. Fast forward 20 years and here i am today in Cavehill Dental Care having a complete refurbishment of the porcelain work which has 20 years of wear and tear. My initial appointment was in August this year where Dr. MacAllister assured me that my abutments and bridge were in great condition and therefore attaching new porcelains and bridge work was going to be very successfull , and Indeed It Was . Impressions taken, porcelains made, preliminary fitting, and 1 more visit for final attachment 2 weeks later . My next process was a visit with the Resident Hygienist Treacy who gave my organic teeth a brilliant clean , and some great advice on future maintenance [ thank you ] . The Staff at Cavehill Dental create an atmosphere of casualness leaving the patient with a pro confident assurance of All Things Great . Many thanks to Marty , Treacy, Dental Assistants, Frances and All the Front Line Staff at Cavehill Dental. P.S. I may not have won X factor , but i left with the Wow factor . Thank You , Everyone, Frank in Dublin.

Removable appliance - a plastic plate that can be taken out to be cleaned. It has delicate wires and springs attached, which move the teeth using gentle pressure. Fixed appliance - Often teeth need to be guided more accurately than they can be using a removable plate. Fixed appliances are brackets and bands temporarily stuck to the teeth. A flexible wire joins all the brackets and allows the teeth to be moved. Invisible Braces - We also offer state of the art ‘invisible braces. ’ These are tough, clear, plastic ‘positioners’ that are used to gradually straighten your teeth. Several sets of specially moulded positioners are made. Each set moves the teeth slightly from the previous position and is worn for about two weeks before being replaced with the next set. Each set is straighter than the last and the final set will be your desired result.

Rating from 12 Reviews Before I agreed to anything, she made sure I was fully aware of what the procedure would entailRebecca, UK, 13 03 18

A friend of mine recommended this dental practice, so I chose them for my lingual braces. I’ve already had the braces fitted and it was worth the price. I actually ended up paying less here than I would have at my regular dentist. There were no additional costs after we agreed on the final package. Cathedral Dental was very good. The facilities were clean and well-run. My dentist was also really nice and she explained it all. Before I agreed to anything, she made sure I was fully aware of what the procedure would entail (which was reassuring). I still go back for follow-ups these days, and everything’s going well.

Rating from 3 Reviews I feel relaxed and confident that the procedures will go wellLemma, UK, 22 04 18

Went to Vineeth for a consultation re-implants and was very reassured by his professionalism and was put at ease by his kindliness. I felt seen as a person, not a job that would be earning money. Also after my x-ray which happened in his Livingston practice, he was able to explain the way my treatment would affect my mouth as a whole in a way that made sense. So although I will need a bone graft on one tooth I feel relaxed and confident that the procedures will go well. Very efficient clean and friendly.

Rating from 28 Reviews I was extremely impressed the minute I walked in the doorBrenda, UK, 10 11 17

Just has a free consultation. I am at present saving up to have treatment. I chose this clinic because they said they don't send anyone away without teeth, unlike my present dentist. I was extremely impressed the minute I walked in the door. The staff I saw were very friendly. The dentist that did my consultation was also very friendly. If I hadn't have liked them, I would vote with my feet and not go back. I am however saving up to have treatment

Braces
You really dont have to put up with crooked teeth anymore. More and more adults are turning to braces to have their crowded teeth straightened. Especially when braces are barely noticeable nowadays with the advent of clear aligners such as Invisalign and Clearstep. There are also some amazing braces out there at the moment such the Inman Aligner which is great for straightening the front four teeth in as little as 2-3 months. Also teeth can be straightened rapidly with cosmetic braces such as the 6 Month Smiles. These braces are great as they only work on the front teeth which are visible and are rapidly becoming the No 1 choice for patients who want their front teeth straightened quickly
