What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

Everything was very professional and the dentist was quite experienced too. I’m happyAnonymous, UK, 24 05 18

I had four sessions for fillings at Hove Dental. I chose them because of the good feedback from past patients. The treatment wasn’t cheap, but I think it was good. It was exactly what I was quoted prior to the appointment. Everything was very professional and the dentist was quite experienced too. I’m happy.

I know I am in a very safe pair of handsToni, UK, 24 11 16

I am dental phobic, and therefore would try and avoid a visit to a dentist at any cost! However I have been a patient of Mr Burgess for the last twenty + years. He is very respectful, understanding and kind. I totally trust his advice and recommendations for treatment. I know I am in a very safe pair of hands and that he will always suggest the treatment that is needed- no more and no less- at a price that is very reasonable. I don't think in all those years I have ever said a proper thank you so I think it is now overdue. If you, like me, are very nervous then this is the practice for you and I know you won't regret it. The reception staff are friendly and helpful too. So a huge thank you and I hope anyone thinking about getting treatment/checked out will feel confident in doing so.

All done painlessly and with results that exceeded my expectationsJulia, UK, 03 07 21

Not only do I have the best routine dental health care from the team at Dental Health Spa It’s given me a better understanding of what good dental practice should be. Incredibly kind, patient and understanding and in a safe and secure environment they make dental visits a pleasure rather than something to be terrified of. So much so that I even decided that I’d try the Zoom whitening and get my chipped and stained top front teeth tidied up with composite bonding. What a huge difference this has made to my self-confidence and willingness to smile! I no longer wince when seeing a photo of my smile. All done painlessly and with results that exceeded my expectations!

I have trouble breathing through my nose so this was incredibly helpfulLynda, UK, 17 06 21

I’ve been incredibly phobic of the dentist since a bad extraction over 10 years ago. And Somerhill was my first experience post this. Richard was so calm and understanding he explained everything clearly and reassured me we could take as many breaks as needed. I have trouble breathing through my nose so this was incredibly helpful. I’d highly recommend this practice. The staff are incredible and the nurses are professional, highly skilled and so friendly A big thank you to everyone x
