What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

I feel relaxed and confident that the procedures will go wellLemma, UK, 22 04 18

Went to Vineeth for a consultation re-implants and was very reassured by his professionalism and was put at ease by his kindliness. I felt seen as a person, not a job that would be earning money. Also after my x-ray which happened in his Livingston practice, he was able to explain the way my treatment would affect my mouth as a whole in a way that made sense. So although I will need a bone graft on one tooth I feel relaxed and confident that the procedures will go well. Very efficient clean and friendly.

I was so pleased with the treatmentBill, UK, 25 05 16

My most recent treatment was three fillings, two for exposed gum margins and one large one to replace an old, cracked filling. I was slightly apprehensive because my normal dentist had recently retired and I had not met his replacement, Adam Odoj before. However, I was soon at ease as Adam, as he prefers to be called, was quite brilliant. Very friendly, extremely efficient and exceptionally capable, quite the best dentist I have had. I was so pleased with the treatment that I have arranged to have other work done now, rather than in the distant future. I have attended this clinic for 23 years. Previously it was NHS, but for about the last 10 years private. Very modern and well appointed with lovely, friendly staff. Easy parking outside or nearby. Reasonable pricing for treatment and very efficiently run.

We are an NHS committed dental practice. We will provide all general dental treatment that is available under the Scottish National Health Service or arrange an appropriate referral. Just because we are an NHS dentist does not mean that we do not offer private treatment at the practice. Your dentist will be happy to discuss the options most appropriate for you.

Very pleased with the service provided and the personnel involvedJohn, UK, 03 09 17

I've been with this practice for a number of years now and have had all sorts of treatments from check-ups to fillings and extractions. I have always been very pleased with the service provided and the personnel involved. In particular, I would wish to highlight my dentist Vass and his wife Marcia. Vass is such a character that I have even begun to enjoy going to the dentist; that really is saying something! I am sorry to learn that Vass is soon to leave the practice. He will be sorely missed for his great sense of humor and his caring personalized attention. I wish Vass and Marcia all the best for the future.
