What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

Braces
Dental Artistry is well-known for our exceptional orthodontic treatments. We offer patients the latest selection of high-quality braces such as Lingual Braces (Win systems), Labial Braces, Ceramic Braces, Damon Advanced Bracket Systems. Fixed braces is a convenient solution for patients as it allows a continuous tooth straightening process. Your doctor is able to adjust your braces as regular as necessary. The fixed braces do not require patients to take them off, clean them and thus potentially wear their braces less than necessary. Having a variety of techniques and excellent know-how we are able to offer our patients the most suitable method to achieve their desired goal.
Adult Braces
Orthodontic braces are not just for children and teenagers. An increasing number of adults are seeking orthodontic treatment to improve their dental health, appearance, and self-confidence. Orthodontic braces for adults work the same way as braces for children and teenagers. It may require longer treatment times due to the natural changes in adult teeth and bones. Orthodontic braces for adults can correct a wide range of dental issues, including crooked teeth, crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Furthermore, braces address problems with jaw alignment and alleviate discomfort or pain associated with these issues. Adults have several options for orthodontic braces, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces (braces attached to the back of the teeth), and clear aligners (such as Invisalign or Spark Aligners). Your orthodontist can recommend the best option for your individual needs. Orthodontic treatment with braces for adults requires a commitment to good oral hygiene and regular visits to the orthodontist for adjustments. Adults who are considering orthodontic treatment should consult with an orthodontist to discuss their options and develop a treatment plan that works best for them.
Ceramic Braces
Aesthetic braces are used to correct biting disorders, close gaps between teeth, straighten crooked teeth (which will become easier to clean after the treatment), and improve your smile's appearance. There is no age limit for orthodontics: after the jaws have finished growing, the orthodontic treatment can guide your teeth to a more favorable position to reach the best functional and aesthetic results. If your orthodontic treatment at Forest and Ray cannot be supported by using aligners or if you would like to avoid the responsibility of having a removable appliance, aesthetic fixed braces may be the right choice for you. Advantages of aesthetic braces: tooth-colored, aesthetic, small brackets, comfortable to wear, and capable of correcting most orthodontic problems, just like metal braces. These appliances combine the effectiveness of traditional metal braces with the great advantage of a spotless look provided by clear brackets. They handle any problems that traditional fixed braces handle and are functionally the same. The only difference is that they are discreet, look smart, and are not associated with childhood. The white or transparent brackets blend into your natural tooth color perfectly, giving you the confidence to smile without anyone noticing you are wearing them.
Child Braces
Orthodontic treatment is indicated for kids to correct biting difficulties and crowded or crooked teeth in order to improve appearance. It is meant to avoid or block dental problems and make eventual treatment less challenging depending on the child's age and whether the jaws and face have finished growing. Because the jawbones and face are still evolving, orthodontic treatment for children can differ significantly from adults. Some problems can be treated much more effectively at a younger age; therefore, it is critical to take your child to the dentist regularly, even if the permanent teeth are not visible yet. Early orthodontic treatment can begin as early as the age of 6-7, potentially eliminating the need for more drastic treatment later on. There is something else to consider at this age: it is highly suggested that you tell your young children that there is no reason to be afraid of the dentist because dentists will help them keep their teeth healthy and their smile bright.

Braces
Orthodontic braces are devices used in orthodontic treatment to straighten and align teeth, correct bite issues, and improve overall dental health. They consist of brackets, wires, and elastic bands that gradually work together to shift the teeth into the desired position over time.Brackets are small metal or ceramic pieces attached to the teeth using a unique adhesive. Wires are then threaded through the brackets and adjusted periodically to apply gentle pressure to the teeth, guiding them into the correct position. Elastic bands help the wires apply the necessary force to the teeth. Orthodontic braces can be made of different materials, including metal, ceramic, or plastic. They can also be customised with different colors and patterns to make them more personalized and fun for patients, especially children, and teenagers. Orthodontic treatment with braces typically lasts for several months to several years, depending on the severity of the dental issues being addressed. Patients must follow a strict oral hygiene routine and attend regular appointments with their orthodontist to ensure good progress and adjustments.

I had a fantastic experience at Oaks Dental Ruislip. The team here, from the dentists to the hygienists, are incredibly friendly, professional, and dedicated to making every visit a comfortable one. A special mention to Dr. Ramona—she is an amazing dentist who truly cares for her patients. Her attention to detail and genuine follow-ups when needed make all the difference. The practice manager and reception staff are equally outstanding. They go above and beyond to accommodate patients efficiently and always listen to their concerns in a professional and empathetic manner. The recent refurbishments are stunning—the practice feels fresh, modern, and welcoming. I also really appreciated the soothing music in the waiting area; it created a calm and relaxing atmosphere that made a big difference for me. I can't recommend Oaks Dental Ruislip enough.
