What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Rating from 1 Review Good reception welcoming, clean, clear and well administeredJim, Canada, 13 Oct 17

The treatment was excellent. The office layout and equipment was state of the art. The only off-putting was the social conversation between the doctor and his assistant - in a friendly way while I was lying there with my mouth open. The clinic seemed excellent. Good reception welcoming, clean, clear and well administered.

Dr Keith Allan has been my dentist for most of my life (30+years!) He is the epitome of a "lifelong learner" ALWAYS attending seminars, workshops, updates etc. I have some serious dental problems including severe TMJ deterioration and he is the ONLY dentist whose advice I would never need to question. My experience in the Alpha Dental Office has been THE BEST. Every member of this unique team is simply the best. Hygienists, Assistants, Receptionists etc. are ALL experienced, friendly and caring.

Dental Crowns
Your teeth are composed of two main parts: The Crown is the part visible above the gum. The Root is the part below the gum that holds your tooth firmly in your jaw bone. If the crown of your tooth becomes weakened by decay or fractures, it can be restored and strengthened by an artificial crown. Artificial crowns are covers which fit over a damaged or badly stained tooth. They look natural and require only the same care necessary for your natural crowns. Talk to Dr. Sam today if you would like more information.

I need a root canal that would cost me around $1750, having insurance back home. They game me a safe and cost effective option, serving my needs. Great service, Excellent work. The Staff is extremely knowledgeable, I though they were all doctors, and the doctor did an excellent job, showed confidence, etc. I'm very happy I chose to have them look at my problem and to have allowed them to provide the service.

Dental Crowns
Crowns are a type of dental restoration which, when cemented into place, fully covers that portion of a tooth which lies at and above the gum line. In comparison, composite fillings/inlays/onlays are dental restorations that are used to fill in or cover over just a portion of a tooth. Since dental crowns encase the entire visible aspect of a tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooths new outer surface.Crowns are used to rebuild broken or decayed teeth, to strengthen teeth, and as a means by which to enhance the cosmetic appearance of teeth. Crowns can be made out of porcelain/ceramic, gold alloy, or a combination of both. Dental crowns are often referred to as "dental caps".
