What is an Orthodontic Retainers?

Orthodontic Retainers are dental appliances made of plastic and metal wires. They are fitted for patients after orthodontic treatment is complete. Their purpose is to help patients maintain the corrected position of their teeth.  Fitting an orthodontic retainer takes between 30 minutes and an hour.

How long should I wear an Orthodontic Retainers?

Patients should wear their retainer for at least 20 hours a day, after their orthodontic treatment, for one year. After this year has passed, they should continue to wear the retainer at nighttime.

Fitting a retainer is not painful. Patients may experience some pain or discomfort for a few days after the retainer is fitted. The pain or discomfort will disappear once they get used to wearing the retainer.

The orthodontist may fit a wire retainer on the teeth and make adjustments wherever needed. The orthodontist may also take an impression and get a retainer fabricated and placed on the teeth.  

What care is required after fitting an Orthodontic Retainer?

Patients should wear retainers continuously, between meals, and at night. They should remove their retainer while taking part in contact sports. They should clean retainers using special products prescribed by the dentist. Some retainers can be cleaned using toothpaste while others require an alcohol free mouth rinse or denture cleaner.  Patients should not expose retainers to any form of heat.

"Outstanding Service". I had excellent treatment by Nikil and his friendly team from beginning to end. Very professional and helpful. Having braces at 46 I was a bit nervous, however, the support from his team was great and very reassuring along the way. Superb treatment and now after 8 months I'm brace free and extremely please, just fantastic results. First-rate clinic with the professional happy team. Chose it after the excellent treatment my daughter received having her braces fitted. Have recommended it to many friends.

Hi I’m pleased to say that I’ve been receiving excellent dental care from Silver Oaks Dental Practice for 5 years and I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. From a very pleasant greeting on arrival, I have received excellent treatments, ranging from a broken crown extraction and other crown replacements to general 6 monthly examinations care x-rays and cleaning. There is always time for any questions and patience that goes with the best of patient care. Don’t hesitate to make an appointment, as you won’t regret it. I would like to say thank you to Lindsey. I have had a few bad experiences with dental hygienists in the past but my faith is now restored. I attended with a gum problem and had to have my gums scraped and cleaned. I can honestly say I never felt a thing. I have attended this practice over the last five years for general dental care and have always found everyone courteous and friendly. The service is very professional and skilled in a caring manner with consideration for the patients' comfort. Costs are quoted in advance and procedures are explained before and during treatment, along with any appropriate ongoing advice. Appointment booking is easy and efficient with helpful email reminders. I have always been happy with the treatment I have received and feel confident and safe in their hands. My thanks to all on the team for a great service. The dentist's chair never was my favourite place but these are my favourite dentists and they've made that chair far more comfortable!
