What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial screws made of titanium or zirconium oxide that connect the jawbone and a dental restoration like a crown or denture. They are also called ‘endosseous’ implants or fixtures. They are an artificial tooth root. Once implanted, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone like part of the body. Dental surgeons perform bone grafting procedures to hold the implant in place for patients who do not have enough surrounding bone structure, or graft bone to help connect implants to the maxillary sinuses on either side of the nose when placing dental implants in the upper jaw.

I have been a patient at Park Chambers for about 4 years since we moved to Cornwall. Unquestionably a great dental practice with a seriously good team. From the reception to the nurses, hygienists and dentists. I can highly recommend Ben (dentist) and Collette (hygienist) who look after me but I know the whole team are equally brilliant. Today I had a dental implant. Understandably very nervous but the team (John, Becky and all) were amazing and I have no hesitation in strongly recommending Park Chambers. They’re brilliant!

First time in over 60 years I have had partial dentures that fit perfect, therefore causing me no pain, unlike all the other dentures I have had made over the years. Also the follow up I had with Amy was excellent. Amy listened to what I had to say and has put into place the treatment I may need. Dental implants are the best option for replacing your missing teeth. In fact, dental implants are the latest dental replacements dentistry can offer. However, even though they function and feel just like natural teeth and do not suffer from the weaknesses of the other options, they are expensive and are not affordable by everyone. Although, as per my thinking dental implants are still quite cost effective in view of the quality of life they permit. If, for some reason you cannot be given implants, or you do not want to choose implants, I am discussing some of the other teeth replacement options that you can consider: - Tooth supported bridge: The replacement tooth (pontic) is supported on crowns placed on healthy teeth on either side. - Removable partial dentures: The dentures sit on the gum, and take support by suction or adhesive. Grinding down of the adjacent teeth is not required. - Maryland bridges or resin-bonded bridges are used where too much chewing stress is not expected, ie, in restoring a lost front tooth. - Replacing multiple teeth: If you want to replace just one or two teeth a fixed bridge is possible as alternative to implants. - Replacing all teeth: The alternative to implants is the complete removable denture (conventional denture).
All-on-4 Dental Implants
All-on-4 Dental Implants - Both Arched £22500 - £29000
Dental Implants: the process of osseointegration is the real secret behind the success of dental implants. Osseointegration is a natural process that is as important to the success of the dental (and other implants) as the story of its discovery is interesting. Like many very useful scientific discoveries, the process of what we now call osseointegration also came to light by chance. It was in 1940, almost a century ago, that Bothe and colleagues were experimenting with titanium as a prosthesis material for fractures in animal legs. Since that time, osseointegration has been studied extensively. As of 2016, titanium alloys are the preferred choice for dental implants and other surgical implants. The alloying is done to modify the mechanical properties of titanium as desired. Bone cells grow onto the surface of the metal, and the bond is mature in three to six months. It is for this reason that in routine implant placement procedures, dentists like to give a gap of about three to six months after installation of implants before a prosthesis is built over them. When implants are loaded in a single day, the dentists advise patients not to burden their implants with hard food initially. We shall discuss more conventional and same-day implant loading in more detail in the preceding chapters.

I had my top denture fitted in December 2025 by gary who is a brilliant technician, I am so so happy with them that I went back in April to have a bottom denture made, Gary is so precise in his work, he is unbelievable, he can’t do enough for you, to make sure you are happy with the fit of the denture, colour, the shape of the teeth. They are definitely worth the money. So if you are looking for new dentures, I highly recommend you go to Smiles and More, where Gary will do a fantastic job.
