What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

Root Canal Treatment is necessary when the pulp (also known as the 'nerve') of the tooth needs to be cleaned out. It may be performed in one visit or might require as many as three or four. On rare occasions even more visits might be necessary. The cost of this intervention varies according to the site of the tooth (e.g. front tooth or molar) and the duration of treatment.

Root canals
Root canal therapy (RCT) is a technique used when the internal part of the tooth, the pulp, has been irreversibly damaged. The usual cause of this is bacterial invasion of the pulp due to decay or trauma. When this occurs the pulp which is the blood and nerve supply, becomes infected and the long-term health of the tooth is compromised. This often results in a dental abscess which can be very painful and may cause swelling in the mouth and face. At  ProDent Care , we use the most advanced techniques of root canal therapy to treat this often distressing condition.Root canal therapy is basically the systematic cleaning and filling of the pulp space enabling the tooth to be saved and remain useful in the mouth. Once root canal therapy is completed the tooth is restored. Often this is with a tooth coloured composite resin although it may require a crown due to the weakness of the remaining tooth structure.Teeth treated with root canal therapy can remain in the mouth as long as a normal tooth, but they should be regularly inspected as part of the routine dental check-up to ensure that there is no decay as this will often be undetected by the patient.

Root End Surgery
Sometimes a non-surgical approach for root canal therapy is not possible. Skillful diagnosis in endodontic surgery requires accurate determination of the reasons for endodontic failure. Most common causes for failure are: unusual, complex and undetectable root canal anatomy, accessory canals that cannot be treated conventionally, or a fractured root. Other factors which may require a surgical approach, include the presence of a post which cannot be removed, calcification of the canals, or obstruction due to a separated instrument. Most of these cases can be successfully treated with endodontic surgery. The goal of all endodontic surgery is to remove disease, prevent it from recurring, and to create an environment in which healing may occur. The surgical procedure itself is done in the dental office, under local anesthetic. It can take approximately two or three hours, and most patients return to work after the procedure. Some of the most common endodontic surgeries are: Apicoectomy or Root-End Resection, Hemisection, Root Amputation.

Rating from 232 Reviews I left that day feeling happy that I had indeed made the right decision for meMaureen, Malta, 22 Sep 17

Being 70 yrs old, I had problems with my bottom denture. To invest in dental implants appeared the solution to being able to keep the denture in situ. I had very minimal pain after the surgery to my surprise, lots of swelling and bruising as had been explained at my initial consultation. I now feel more confident. I would recommend dental implantation as being good value. The total cost covered all procedures and follow-ups and there were no hidden charges. This practice was chosen as I had had previous treatment a few years back and found this practice to be very professional. On my initial visit to discuss if dental implants could, in fact, be a reality for me. All was explained to me in great depth, exactly what to expect, cost and time frame. Appointments made. I left that day feeling happy that I had indeed made the right decision for me.
