What is Gum Contouring and Reshaping?

Gum contouring surgery is a procedure performed to improve the appearance of smiles. It is also called gum reshaping or gum tissue sculpting surgery. Gum contouring surgery is performed to cosmetically improve the appearance of smiles or as part of gum surgery to treat gum diseases. Nonsurgical gum shaping procedures are also performed. Traditional gum contouring surgery takes about three hours to complete and laser gum contouring and radiosurgery may take about one to two hours.

How is Gum Contouring and Reshaping performed?

Traditional gum contouring surgery is performed by the surgeon making an incision in the gum tissue. The surgeon may remove or graft bone or gum tissue as required to give gums the required shape and size. Laser gum surgery is performed using a diode laser to remove excessive gum tissue and give them an even appearance. Bi-polar electrosurgery using a radiosurgery unit and a low current to cut gum tissue is also used for gum contouring.

Traditional gum contouring surgery, laser gum surgery and radiosurgery are performed under local anaesthesia. Patients will not feel any pain during the procedure. They may experience swelling and discomfort after the procedure.

Drs Demajo Dental and Implantology Clinics

Rating from 232 Reviews I can smile, and I can eat everything againJo, Malta, 07 Nov 17

I went to Dr. Jean Paul Demajo for a consultation. I’d had gum disease a few years ago and lost a few teeth and others had been filled more than once, not a pretty sight. He examined me, took X-rays and arranged a full cleaning session. In June I had a session of nearly 4 hours whilst he injected my gums, inserted 9 implant bases, removed four teeth and sent me home in a taxi. I spent three months eating risotto, fish or anything else soft, as I couldn’t cope with the dentures he had made for me. Then more sessions for measurements, exposing the implants, making the moulds for the new teeth, and finally, 9 new teeth were inserted, some singles and some fixed together. Immediately, one side of my mouth felt quite natural and the other side felt enormous, but in a few days, that sensation disappeared. I can smile, and I can eat everything again. Expensive but well worth it - it took six months in total, but I hope they will last a lifetime. Jean Paul Demajo was recommended by a friend as a good implant surgeon, and I decided to have my implant surgery done in Malta where I have been working, rather than to have to fly home to the UK. The surgery is technologically completely up to date, with excellent staff and big enough to house all the necessary expertise under one roof. The Clinic is efficient, the staff are well trained, polite, and speak many languages.

The Dental and Implantology Unit at Saint James Hospital

2778 1850 ext: 24839 Dental & Implantology Unit at Saint James Hospital, George Borg Olivier Street, Silema, SLM 1807
Rating from 22 Reviews I needed extensive dental work as my teeth were failingSusan, Malta, 03 Dec 15

As an older person, I recently reached the stage where I needed extensive dental work as my teeth were failing and my severe gag reflex rendered dentures of any kind impossible. A comprehensive treatment plan was drawn up and carefully discussed with me before going ahead. This required the extraction of several teeth, initially planned for five but I believe there were more. I had approximately six implants in my upper jaw and three in the lower jaw. But the crowning glory (no pun intended) was the bridge work for the upper jaw. This is of the highest standard, and great care was taken to ensure a good colour match with what is left of my own teeth. It looks completely natural and I am not sure that anyone would be aware of how much effort and expertise went into reaching this stage. I would have really hated one of those bright white bridges that you see too often! This was expensive treatment, but I view it as investment for life. The implants and bridge fitted have a projected life, with good care and hygiene, of 15-20 years although the bridge may need changing after 10-15 years due to wear. I would find it hard to recommend the work of this clinic highly enough. I am a very difficult dental patient as I have a severe gag reflex, which makes almost all treatment impossible without sedation. This in turn led me to being very nervous of visits to the dentist. The care, consideration and encouragement of the professional staff here has brought me to a stage where I am comfortable entering the dental surgery - a simple visit that previously would have left me in a state of near collapse. Obviously this amount of work took a fair amount of time, and I always received what I consider to be the highest standards of care and courtesy. Everyone from the Receptionists, through the very lovely dental nurses to Mark and Susanna Diacono and the various anaesthetists were outstanding. Quite apart from the care at the time of the appointments, I appreciated the follow up phone calls to ensure that I was OK and recovering well. If you are a nervous patient, have a sensitive gag reflex or require any kind of dental work, but especially the extensive type of treatment I have had, I strongly recommend you visit the Dental and Implantology Unit; I am confident that you will receive the same world-class treatment I have.
