What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial screws made of titanium or zirconium oxide that connect the jawbone and a dental restoration like a crown or denture. They are also called ‘endosseous’ implants or fixtures. They are an artificial tooth root. Once implanted, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone like part of the body. Dental surgeons perform bone grafting procedures to hold the implant in place for patients who do not have enough surrounding bone structure, or graft bone to help connect implants to the maxillary sinuses on either side of the nose when placing dental implants in the upper jaw.

How long does it take to fit a Dental Implant?

The time taken for inserting dental implants depends on the bone structure and needs of each individual patient. Some implant procedures take about 15 minutes while others may take up to two hours. Implant procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. Intravenous sedation is used for the comfort of anxious patients.

How long does it take to recover after getting a Dental Implant?

Recovery time after a dental implant procedure may take four to six weeks or up to 12 weeks for some patients. Patients can travel one day after the insertion of a single dental implant. Patients who require multiple dental implants or supporting surgical procedures should wait for around two weeks before travelling. They should meet the dental surgeon to get a certification of being fit to travel before embarking on their journey.

What should I do after getting a Dental Implant?

Patients should rest and avoid exertion after surgery. They should also avoid vigorously brushing their teeth or rinsing their mouth.

What are the alternatives to Dental Implants?

Alternatives to dental implants include fixed bridges and dentures.

A very high level of professionalism adopted by the clinicPeter, Malta, 08 08 17

Mine was a very big job. In technical terms, I had 9 implants, simultaneous bone grafting and sinus lifting and 14 all-ceramic crowns manufactured at the onsite laboratory. I had been suffering from mouth infections for years, I had lost almost all my molars and I was beginning to worry about the future ability to eat properly. A year ago I decided to consult Dr. Jean Paul Demajo and today I feel a new man. I cannot say if it was or not. I suppose we all have our financial benchmarks, and not being able to compare with other clinics it is impossible to say if it was good value. For me personally, I consider that I could not have got any better treatment for any amount of money anywhere in the world. The name Demajo in Malta is synonymous with dentistry since the family has been involved in the profession for close to a hundred years. There is only one word to describe the first impression as well as the impression I got on each of the 33 visits I made to the clinic in 14 months, the last and closing visit was actually yesterday: Professionalism. Nothing and nobody ever made me doubt the very high level of professionalism adopted by the clinic, and this goes from the receptionist to the nurses, the dentists and most of all to Dr. Jean Paul Demajo himself.

Once I got inside the actual dental clinic everything was absolutely state-of-the-artHilary, UK, 22 05 18

This clinic is actually attached to the hotel where I have a timeshare. I spoke to others who’d used the dentist and thought I’d meet with him myself to see what he was about. I was given a quote for the dental implant at the consultation and thought it was a reasonable price. The same procedure could easily have cost me three thousand pounds in the UK, but I was charged half of that in Malta. I had the procedure here largely because of the cost. I’m so happy with the results and would be delighted to promote the clinic! I’ll be honest, when I walked through the front door, I didn’t have very high expectations (the hotel was still under reconstruction at the time). Once I got inside the actual dental clinic everything was absolutely state-of-the-art. The place is superb and they have everything you could want. I also believe the quality of the treatment and service was higher than anything I’ve received in my home country. First, they needed to put the post in, and then I had to go home to let it settle. I went back to have the tooth inserted afterwards. My dental implants was a two-visit procedure. Definitely a 5-star experience.

A clinic like no other, well done! I'm so impressed by the service provided. A friendly recommendation - it is the dental clinic to visit in Malta.

Dental Implants
The process is based on a process of integration of titanium or zirconia to the surrounding bone. This allows the new replacement tooth or teeth to have a very strong and stable base, maintaining the surrounding bone. This is the reason why implants give you the comfort, functionality and beauty of healthy teeth. In order to understand how implants work it is important to appreciate the way in which healing takes place. When a tooth is taken out it leaves a hole in the gum which fills up with a blood clot. Within two months the hole in the jaw is covered with gum, slowly over the next six months the bone fills the hole completely. The healing of implants depends on this natural process. Traditional dentistry, which relies on bridges, partial and complete dentures, simply cannot compare to the “good as new” quality that advanced implant technology can give you. Teeth are rarely lost today, because every effort is made to save them. There are a number of reasons why teeth may need to be taken out.• Dental DiseaseWhen very little of the tooth remains because of a lot of decay. For example root filled teeth with failed post crowns or broken teeth.• Gum DiseaseThe supporting bone around the tooth is lost due to pocketing and infection, in some cases even leading to tooth mobility.• Unsuccessful Root canal therapyTeeth that have been root canal treated can be prone to persistent infection resulting in a poor prognosis and are often removed.Implant therapy is the replacement of the root with an artificial root that is made from titanium or zirconia. The procedure can be used to replace one tooth, several teeth or all the teeth. <

Single Implant
A single tooth can be lost in the front of the mouth and restored in a number of ways: • Moving teeth into the spaceOrthodontic treatment can be viable for young individuals, but more complex in adults. Itdepends on whether the adjacent teeth are of the right shape and in the right position.• Removable Partial DentureMain disadvantage that it is removable and may come away unexpectedly. It can cause further gum disease of tooth decay if not maintained correctly.• Adhesive BridgesThese are secured by bonding to the adjacent teeth on either side and are effective at replacing a missing tooth, but might not last indefinitely especially when there is a strong bite.• Conventional BridgeA predictable procedure, which requires the cutting down of healthy teeth on either side of a gap in order to support the bridge. This is a major disadvantage because it involves destroying healthy tooth tissue.• ImplantsAn implant replaces a missing tooth and is an independent restoration. It has the advantage that it stimulates bone to stay and get stronger. This is something that will not happen with any other option. Implants are usually a more cost-effective and satisfactory option.

Without my denture l would have had a lot of trouble eatingColin, Croatia, 05 07 19

l broke a denture and contacted the clinic. They said come over ASAP. I did, and they said the denture could be repaired, and they sent it to the technician. l went back at 7:00 pm and although l had to wait (which they warned me l might have to), the repaired dentures arrived at about 7:25 pm, repaired. A good repair job. I'm totally happy with being fitted in, and the dentures repaired, as l was being picked up to go to the airport at 9:00 am the following day back to the UK, and flying out to Croatia the following day. Without my denture l would have had a lot of trouble eating. 10/10
