What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial screws made of titanium or zirconium oxide that connect the jawbone and a dental restoration like a crown or denture. They are also called ‘endosseous’ implants or fixtures. They are an artificial tooth root. Once implanted, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone like part of the body. Dental surgeons perform bone grafting procedures to hold the implant in place for patients who do not have enough surrounding bone structure, or graft bone to help connect implants to the maxillary sinuses on either side of the nose when placing dental implants in the upper jaw.

How long does it take to fit a Dental Implant?

The time taken for inserting dental implants depends on the bone structure and needs of each individual patient. Some implant procedures take about 15 minutes while others may take up to two hours. Implant procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. Intravenous sedation is used for the comfort of anxious patients.

How long does it take to recover after getting a Dental Implant?

Recovery time after a dental implant procedure may take four to six weeks or up to 12 weeks for some patients. Patients can travel one day after the insertion of a single dental implant. Patients who require multiple dental implants or supporting surgical procedures should wait for around two weeks before travelling. They should meet the dental surgeon to get a certification of being fit to travel before embarking on their journey.

What should I do after getting a Dental Implant?

Patients should rest and avoid exertion after surgery. They should also avoid vigorously brushing their teeth or rinsing their mouth.

What are the alternatives to Dental Implants?

Alternatives to dental implants include fixed bridges and dentures.

I would have no hesitation recommendingAnn-Marie, Ireland, 22 Jan 15

I was delighted with my treatment at The Thames Dental Clinic. The clinic was very modern and the staff were very friendly which is always great to see. The clinic is located very close to the bus stop which was very convenient and also directly beside a pharmacy. This made is very easy for me to pick up my medication. The very good prices they have on offer was an important factor when i chose the clinic for my consultation and treatment. The communication between myself and the clinic was very good and i had no problem making my appointment as they were very helpful through email conversations. I would have no hesitation recommending The Thames Dental Clinic to anybody looking for dental treatment.

Dental Implants
The process is based on a process of integration of titanium or zirconia to the surrounding bone. This allows the new replacement tooth or teeth to have a very strong and stable base, maintaining the surrounding bone. This is the reason why implants give you the comfort, functionality and beauty of healthy teeth. In order to understand how implants work it is important to appreciate the way in which healing takes place. When a tooth is taken out it leaves a hole in the gum which fills up with a blood clot. Within two months the hole in the jaw is covered with gum, slowly over the next six months the bone fills the hole completely. The healing of implants depends on this natural process. Traditional dentistry, which relies on bridges, partial and complete dentures, simply cannot compare to the “good as new” quality that advanced implant technology can give you. Teeth are rarely lost today, because every effort is made to save them. There are a number of reasons why teeth may need to be taken out.• Dental DiseaseWhen very little of the tooth remains because of a lot of decay. For example root filled teeth with failed post crowns or broken teeth.• Gum DiseaseThe supporting bone around the tooth is lost due to pocketing and infection, in some cases even leading to tooth mobility.• Unsuccessful Root canal therapyTeeth that have been root canal treated can be prone to persistent infection resulting in a poor prognosis and are often removed.Implant therapy is the replacement of the root with an artificial root that is made from titanium or zirconia. The procedure can be used to replace one tooth, several teeth or all the teeth. <

Immediate Implant Placement
In case where there is no active infection and the gum and bone is intact, it is sometimes possible to remove a tooth which is failing or which has been traumatized and to insert an implant at the same time and bring it to function with a temporary tooth. Should immediate replacement not be possible additional bone grafting and soft tissue gum corrective procedures may have to be employed.

Drs Demajo Dental and Implantology Clinics

Rating from 232 Reviews I hated the thought of dentures and quickly accepted that implants were the answerBrian, UK, 17 Mar 16

I am a retired RAF officer aged 84 who had heart bypass surgery 26 years ago. However my only health problem in recent times has been the condition of my ever fewer teeth. Last summer my dentist told me they had reached the end of the road. I hated the thought of dentures and quickly accepted that implants were the answer. Two close relatives with recent implants were very supportive. Intensive research and my long association with Malta inevitably led me to conclude that the Drs Demajo Clinic was exactly right for me. On the first full day of my week's visit in October 2015 I had multiple extractions and immediate placement of eleven implants with simultaneous bone grafting. As soon as this was done I was able to retire to the apartment above the clinic, which my wife and I were to occupy throughout both visits. My temporary dentures, which I wore for four and a half months, were ready a few days later and the unavoidable bruising and swelling had almost gone when I flew home. I returned in March 2016 to have seventeen new porcelain teeth fitted, which were manufactured in the clinic's onsite laboratory. This time the visit was a very pleasant holiday. From the moment you enter this tastefully decorated, impeccably clean and tidy, beautifully equipped clinic you feel completely calm and at ease. Dr Jean Paul Demajo is not only a superb implant surgeon but he also leads a happy, competent and caring team who clearly enjoy their work. I felt I was among friends with whom I could relax. As a bonus Malta is a cultural gem with the best climate in the world. I have enjoyed superb treatment for the very reasonable price of twenty thousand euros and I cannot thank Dr Jean Paul Demajo and everyone at the clinic enough.
