What is Bad Breath?

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a condition where patients have a bad odour coming from their mouths. It may be a rare temporary condition or it may be a chronic on-going condition.

What causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath is usually caused by poor oral hygiene. The bacteria that forms between teeth when patients do not brush or floss regularly cause a bad smell. Garlic and other food with strong smells can contribute to halitosis. Smoking and some medications, including chemotherapy medications, cause halitosis. Patients who go on diets sometimes suffer halitosis and patients with a health condition called dry mouth, where the mouth does not produce sufficient saliva suffer halitosis.  Fear of flying or public speaking, etc, can also trigger halitosis.

How is Bad Breath treated?

Dentists or dental hygienists will professionally clean teeth to treat halitosis. They will also give patients correct dental hygiene instructions to stop bad breath. They will treat dental problems like gum diseases to stop bad breath.

How long does recovery take after receiving a treatment for Bad Breath?

The recovery from halitosis depends on the cause and method used to treat bad breath. Some patients feel pain or sensitivity after professional dental cleaning but should recover within a day.  Patients may take a week or two to recover from gum surgery. Patients with halitosis caused by smoking will recover a few weeks after ceasing smoking.

What after care is required after receiving a treatment for Bad Breath?

Patients should practice correct dental and oral hygiene. They should follow the advice of their dentist or hygienist correctly.

Rating from 223 Reviews Excellent serviceCatherine, Malta, 10 Mar 17

About 3 months ago my tooth broke in half and I turned for advice to Dr. Jean Paul Damajo. He offered an excellent service and I ended up with a brilliant tooth implant in just 3 months. No pain, bruising or stitches and with an implant looking as good as the natural tooth. All made in service.

Now I can smile again in confidenceElizabeth, Luqa, 25 Oct 15

I am a 62 year old retired female, who had a problem of missing teeth and bad breath in my mouth which was very annoying. I got on the internet and started researching for a good dental clinic, when I came across the Drs Demajo Dental and implantology clinics. I requested a consultation on the website. When I went for my appointment I was cordially greeted by Dr. Jean Paul Demajo, who is very pleasant and tremendously professional. He gave me an estimate of the cost for each tooth. I decided that it was reasonable and it would fit my pocket. A dental CT scan revealed that I had an abscess where food was depositing which was giving me bad breath. In the end I had 3 implants done all ceramic crown and 2 zirconia crowns. In all it costed €6,800. The clinic is very clean, with every piece of equipment a dentist needs to perform advance dentistry. The staff were all professional. I am completely satisfied with the service and care that I have received from Dr. Jean Paul Demajo and the staff. I only wish that I had not waited so long to have the implants done. I am so thankful as now I can smile again with confidence.

Rating from 7 Reviews I enjoyed the experienceIvana, Qawra, Malta, 18 Sep 14

Dentist Consultation, Cleaning, 4 fillings Received 4 fillings and a cleaning. The dentist has a gentle touch, a friendly and honest manner and the latest instruments which means there was no pain or discomfort whatsoever. I am scared of dentists, but I enjoyed the experience and will be back again. Prices were very reasonable.

My treatment was awesomeRachel, Malta, 22 Jun 17

Visited Dr. Clifford on numerous occasions. My treatment has included route canal and replacement of a new crown. Every visit has been made as pain free as possible, with great care and such lovely manners, no matter what time and how busy this young man is. He is an absolute credit. His patient skills as well as his dentistry skills are above any scale that I could give.

Rating from 3 Reviews The dentist was very professional and talked me through itPer, Norway, 23 Dec 16

Excellent. I did a dental cleaning and one filling. Price of the filling was 40 euro while the cleaning and xray pictures cost me 30. The filling was quite deep and I got two needles with anesthetics. I have very low tolerance to pain, but the dentist was very professional and talked me through it, very calmly. My wife was also very happy with her treatment. Excellent. The facade is quite hidden, just beside a pharmacy. Inside it was nice and clean with very professional staff. There's clean restroom and waiting room with tv and english magazines/newspapers.

Rating from 7 Reviews The whole extraction process seem relaxed and completely pain freeRyan, Malta, 10 May 17

I found My Smile via what clinic. I had some wisdom teeth removed and I am due to get further work done. My dentist was Dr Kevin Briffa he made the whole extraction process seem relaxed and completely pain free. It was perfect. Really clean, modern, friendly place. They have AC and a really relaxing environment.

I would recommendStephen, Malta, 29 Nov 13

I had several wisdom teeth extracted years ago, with another one requiring surgical extraction. Due to the experience I had at a previous dentist, I was reluctant (to say the least) to even consider having a larger procedure done due to the pain during and after the last experience. I met MySmile some time ago in a professional capacity and always felt that I was talking to informed professional people. As the pain in my tooth grew, I knew it would have to be removed and contacted MySmile who made prompt arrangements for me to see them. The procedure which was a wisdom tooth surgical extraction, was handled during the course of 20 minutes. Having provided me with anaesthetic I was aware of what they were doing but never felt any pain. Over the coming week I recovered and experienced only what I would consider as recovery pain, nothing at all like my previous experience. I would recommend MySmile and the ever patient Dr Evan Camillieri for any Dentistry needs. I felt my teeth and level of pain were always being considered. And of course the brilliant office styling just makes me automatically relax. Thanks a lot

The Dental and Implantology Unit at Saint James Hospital

2778 1850 ext: 24839 Dental & Implantology Unit at Saint James Hospital, George Borg Olivier Street, Silema, SLM 1807
Rating from 22 Reviews I needed extensive dental work as my teeth were failingSusan, Malta, 03 Dec 15

As an older person, I recently reached the stage where I needed extensive dental work as my teeth were failing and my severe gag reflex rendered dentures of any kind impossible. A comprehensive treatment plan was drawn up and carefully discussed with me before going ahead. This required the extraction of several teeth, initially planned for five but I believe there were more. I had approximately six implants in my upper jaw and three in the lower jaw. But the crowning glory (no pun intended) was the bridge work for the upper jaw. This is of the highest standard, and great care was taken to ensure a good colour match with what is left of my own teeth. It looks completely natural and I am not sure that anyone would be aware of how much effort and expertise went into reaching this stage. I would have really hated one of those bright white bridges that you see too often! This was expensive treatment, but I view it as investment for life. The implants and bridge fitted have a projected life, with good care and hygiene, of 15-20 years although the bridge may need changing after 10-15 years due to wear. I would find it hard to recommend the work of this clinic highly enough. I am a very difficult dental patient as I have a severe gag reflex, which makes almost all treatment impossible without sedation. This in turn led me to being very nervous of visits to the dentist. The care, consideration and encouragement of the professional staff here has brought me to a stage where I am comfortable entering the dental surgery - a simple visit that previously would have left me in a state of near collapse. Obviously this amount of work took a fair amount of time, and I always received what I consider to be the highest standards of care and courtesy. Everyone from the Receptionists, through the very lovely dental nurses to Mark and Susanna Diacono and the various anaesthetists were outstanding. Quite apart from the care at the time of the appointments, I appreciated the follow up phone calls to ensure that I was OK and recovering well. If you are a nervous patient, have a sensitive gag reflex or require any kind of dental work, but especially the extensive type of treatment I have had, I strongly recommend you visit the Dental and Implantology Unit; I am confident that you will receive the same world-class treatment I have.
