What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth coloured coverings also known as porcelain laminates used to cover the front of the tooth. They are placed to improve the appearance of smiles by changing the colour, length or size of teeth. The porcelain used to make the veneers is of a high quality and is generally long lasting.

What is the difference between Porcelain Veneers and Dental Crowns?

Porcelain veneers are only used to cosmetically correct the appearance of smiles. They only cover the front portion of the tooth. Dental crowns cover the entire tooth and are used to cover damaged teeth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants. Crowns are thicker than veneers. The patient’s tooth structure does not need much reduction for the placement of a porcelain veneer. A major portion of the tooth structure has to be reduced before the placement of a crown.

How long do Porcelain Veneers last?

Porcelain veneers last between 10 and 20 years. Patients need to follow the dental maintenance care instructions strictly to ensure that their porcelain veneers don’t wear out or chip. Porcelain veneers are the strongest and costliest type of veneer.

Is it painful getting Porcelain Veneers?

The dentist will administer a local anaesthetic before placing porcelain veneers. This is because the teeth of some patients are more sensitive than others. Since very little tooth structure is reduced for placing veneers, patients will not feel pain after veneers are placed. Some patients may feel a little soreness or sensitivity for a few days after the anaesthesia wears off.

Drs Demajo Dental and Implantology Clinics

Rating from 223 Reviews I was never happy with my teethNicole, Malta, 12 Jul 17

3 porcelain veneers and a porcelain crown, manufactured in onsite laboratory I have been visiting Demajo since arriving in Malta 5 years ago, as they came super highly recommended, and how pleased I am to have them as my dentist. Having moved from the UK and always dreaded my dental visits, I was pleasantly surprised, and overwhelmed, by just how friendly, professional and skilled this clinic is. More recently, I had a broken front tooth, with the other front teeth being rather weak. I was never happy with my teeth for the simple reason they were stained and crooked. So, because of the broken front tooth, I took the plunge and had 4 new front teeth. They are new to me, even though they are crowns, I am thrilled with my new look! I must say I was terrified at the prospect of the procedure, but Dr. Sarah and Dr. Jean Paul were fantastic. They really care and take great pride in their work. Unlike my previous experiences with dentists in the UK, they keep to their promises of delivering great results. All through the process, I felt comfortable, confident and totally at ease knowing that I was in the best hands possible. I cannot recommend Drs Demajo Dental and Implantology Clinic enough. And I urge anyone looking for a good dentist (in this case, the best) to visit Demajo. Even if you don't live in Malta, it is worth traveling because I firmly believe that you will not find better anywhere else in the world! Thank you so much to everyone at the clinic, especially to the amazing Dr. Sarah and Dr. Jean Paul Demajo.

Another possibility to crowning of anterior teeth is Veneers. These are wafer thin shells of porcelain, which are bonded onto the front of natural teeth. These veneers correct discoloured, chipped, twisted or otherwise malformed teeth. Although rather thin in manufacture, on bonding these become an intrinsic part of the tooth and are strong and resilient to normal everyday wear and tear.

In just two or three dental visits, a veneer can reverse years of stains caused by foods, caffeine and tobacco use. Special thin laminates, called veneers, can also be used to correct discolored, worn down, cracked and chipped teeth. Veneers can also be used to close unsightly gaps between teeth. Stronger types of veneers made of porcelain, as opposed to composite veneers, typically last longer. An impression of the tooth must be made and a veneer molded by a lab technician. Because veneers require a small amount of enamel to be removed, they are permanent and non-reversible. The process involves buffing the tooth, removing an extremely thin layer of the tooth to allow for the thickness of the veneer, an impression of the tooth, and final bonding of the veneer to the tooth with special cement. A special light is used to complete the process.

Rating from 3 Reviews The dentist was very professional and talked me through itPer, Norway, 23 Dec 16

Excellent. I did a dental cleaning and one filling. Price of the filling was 40 euro while the cleaning and xray pictures cost me 30. The filling was quite deep and I got two needles with anesthetics. I have very low tolerance to pain, but the dentist was very professional and talked me through it, very calmly. My wife was also very happy with her treatment. Excellent. The facade is quite hidden, just beside a pharmacy. Inside it was nice and clean with very professional staff. There's clean restroom and waiting room with tv and english magazines/newspapers.

Veneers
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of the tooth. Sometime, a natural composite material is used instead of porcelain. It can improve the colour, shape and position of teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured or stained tooth or to lighten front teeth. We use the finest porcelain veneers available to restore crooked, damaged, or discolored teeth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look intact. It covers the whole front part of the tooth with thicker surface replacing the fractured part. Veneers can be used to close small gaps, if orthodontic treatment is not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position to the rest, a veneer is sometimes fitted to bring it in line with the other teeth.

The Dental and Implantology Unit at Saint James Hospital

2778 1850 ext: 24839 Dental & Implantology Unit at Saint James Hospital, George Borg Olivier Street, Silema, SLM 1807
Rating from 22 Reviews I needed extensive dental work as my teeth were failingSusan, Malta, 03 Dec 15

As an older person, I recently reached the stage where I needed extensive dental work as my teeth were failing and my severe gag reflex rendered dentures of any kind impossible. A comprehensive treatment plan was drawn up and carefully discussed with me before going ahead. This required the extraction of several teeth, initially planned for five but I believe there were more. I had approximately six implants in my upper jaw and three in the lower jaw. But the crowning glory (no pun intended) was the bridge work for the upper jaw. This is of the highest standard, and great care was taken to ensure a good colour match with what is left of my own teeth. It looks completely natural and I am not sure that anyone would be aware of how much effort and expertise went into reaching this stage. I would have really hated one of those bright white bridges that you see too often! This was expensive treatment, but I view it as investment for life. The implants and bridge fitted have a projected life, with good care and hygiene, of 15-20 years although the bridge may need changing after 10-15 years due to wear. I would find it hard to recommend the work of this clinic highly enough. I am a very difficult dental patient as I have a severe gag reflex, which makes almost all treatment impossible without sedation. This in turn led me to being very nervous of visits to the dentist. The care, consideration and encouragement of the professional staff here has brought me to a stage where I am comfortable entering the dental surgery - a simple visit that previously would have left me in a state of near collapse. Obviously this amount of work took a fair amount of time, and I always received what I consider to be the highest standards of care and courtesy. Everyone from the Receptionists, through the very lovely dental nurses to Mark and Susanna Diacono and the various anaesthetists were outstanding. Quite apart from the care at the time of the appointments, I appreciated the follow up phone calls to ensure that I was OK and recovering well. If you are a nervous patient, have a sensitive gag reflex or require any kind of dental work, but especially the extensive type of treatment I have had, I strongly recommend you visit the Dental and Implantology Unit; I am confident that you will receive the same world-class treatment I have.
