What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is performed for dental procedures for anxious patients by administering medications to help them relax. Many patients avoid getting the required dental help because of their fear of the dentist. Sedation dentistry is performed to ensure that nervous patients enjoy healthy mouths and teeth.

What are the types of dental sedation?

The different types of dental sedation are; inhalation sedation, for patients requiring mild sedation also called anxiolysis; oral sedation, by asking patients to swallow a pill; TENS, using electrical impulses to numb the area; topical anaesthesia, using a swab to numb the area; or intra-venous sedation, for patients requiring moderate sedation and general anaesthesia for patients requiring deep sedation. General anaesthesia is used for patients only in a hospital and not in a dentist chair.

Is Sedation Dentistry painful?

Oral sedation, inhalation sedation, TENS and topical sedation are not painful. Intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia need to be injected and patients may feel pain when the sedative is injected.

When can I travel by air after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should travel by air two days after sedation dentistry. They should take the advice of their dentist before embarking on their journey.

How long does recovery after Sedation Dentistry take?

Recovery from dental sedation takes between 40 to 90 minutes. Recovery depends on the type of sedation administered.

What after care is required after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should rest for at least three hours after sedation dentistry. They should not eat for at least four hours, until the anaesthesia wears off. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should resume work at least one day after sedation dentistry. They should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least two days after sedation dentistry. They should follow all dietary prescriptions given by their dentist correctly.

Drs Demajo Dental and Implantology Clinics

2778 1157 Head Office 1/3 Marina Court, Giuseppe Cali Street, Ta' Xbiex, 1421
Rating from 223 Reviews The whole process took 4 months and I am very happy with the resultSuzanne, Malta, 10 Oct 17

Extraction of a tooth, immediate placement of 2 implants with simultaneous bone grafting under sedation and construction of all-ceramic crowns on 2 implants. I had read many write-ups in the local media of treatments done by Dr. Jean Paul Demajo and finally plucked up the courage for a consultation. I was a very nervous customer due to the unfortunate trauma I had suffered as a child and because of which I was terrified of visiting a dentist. I specifically chose this clinic because of their professionalism and the fact that they offered the option of sedation. Everyone at the clinic was very friendly and professional from the receptionist to the nurses. The whole process took 4 months and I am very happy with the result. I also recommend Dr. Sarah Vella who was very patient and gentle when performing final teeth cleaning. I will definitely recommend this clinic.

Rating from 3 Reviews The dentist was very professional and talked me through itPer, Norway, 23 Dec 16

Excellent. I did a dental cleaning and one filling. Price of the filling was 40 euro while the cleaning and xray pictures cost me 30. The filling was quite deep and I got two needles with anesthetics. I have very low tolerance to pain, but the dentist was very professional and talked me through it, very calmly. My wife was also very happy with her treatment. Excellent. The facade is quite hidden, just beside a pharmacy. Inside it was nice and clean with very professional staff. There's clean restroom and waiting room with tv and english magazines/newspapers.

Rating from 1 Review Quick and painless extractionJeffrey, Sliema Park Hotel, 25 Sep 15

Emergency extraction whilst on holiday. Was seen to at short notice. Treatment carried out well after considering my heart condition. A relatively quick and painless experience I would certainly recommend this clinic to friends. Good value. Clinic close to central Sliema in a modern office block, served with lifts for easy access. Staff most welcoming and helpful, and the dental surgeon was most concerning about my heart condition, even ordering me a taxi back to my hotel, a matter of about half a mile. Modern office block created a very good impression, backed up by the excellent professional care received.

The Dental and Implantology Unit at Saint James Hospital

2778 1850 ext: 24839 Dental & Implantology Unit at Saint James Hospital, George Borg Olivier Street, Silema, SLM 1807
Rating from 22 Reviews I needed extensive dental work as my teeth were failingSusan, Malta, 03 Dec 15

As an older person, I recently reached the stage where I needed extensive dental work as my teeth were failing and my severe gag reflex rendered dentures of any kind impossible. A comprehensive treatment plan was drawn up and carefully discussed with me before going ahead. This required the extraction of several teeth, initially planned for five but I believe there were more. I had approximately six implants in my upper jaw and three in the lower jaw. But the crowning glory (no pun intended) was the bridge work for the upper jaw. This is of the highest standard, and great care was taken to ensure a good colour match with what is left of my own teeth. It looks completely natural and I am not sure that anyone would be aware of how much effort and expertise went into reaching this stage. I would have really hated one of those bright white bridges that you see too often! This was expensive treatment, but I view it as investment for life. The implants and bridge fitted have a projected life, with good care and hygiene, of 15-20 years although the bridge may need changing after 10-15 years due to wear. I would find it hard to recommend the work of this clinic highly enough. I am a very difficult dental patient as I have a severe gag reflex, which makes almost all treatment impossible without sedation. This in turn led me to being very nervous of visits to the dentist. The care, consideration and encouragement of the professional staff here has brought me to a stage where I am comfortable entering the dental surgery - a simple visit that previously would have left me in a state of near collapse. Obviously this amount of work took a fair amount of time, and I always received what I consider to be the highest standards of care and courtesy. Everyone from the Receptionists, through the very lovely dental nurses to Mark and Susanna Diacono and the various anaesthetists were outstanding. Quite apart from the care at the time of the appointments, I appreciated the follow up phone calls to ensure that I was OK and recovering well. If you are a nervous patient, have a sensitive gag reflex or require any kind of dental work, but especially the extensive type of treatment I have had, I strongly recommend you visit the Dental and Implantology Unit; I am confident that you will receive the same world-class treatment I have.
