Prof. Özbayrak completed his doctoral training at the Freie Universität Berlin in Oral Medicine, then returned to Turkey to chair the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology at Marmara University from 1986 to 2013 — a tenure of 27 years. Zümrüt Özbayrak trained in paediatric dentistry in Germany. Together, they built one of the first European-standard academic dental practices in Istanbul, decades before international dental tourism emerged as a category.
