What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

So impressed with their state of art facility, their staffMargie, Ireland, 02 12 22

Wonderful, professional experience from Boyne Dental. So impressed with their state of art facility, their staff from receptionist to hygienist to dentists. Dr David Murnaghan is an expert in his field. I had bridge work done and even the temporary bridge was so good I would have been happy enough with that. Due to a fall as a kid, I've had a lot of work done on my teeth. I wish Boyne Dental were around then. In any case, so happy to have them now and for any future work. Don't waste your time driving north. You won't save anything in the long run. Instead have complete peace of mind from start to finish with Boyne Dental I cannot recommend them highly enough. Superb!

Can highly recommendKornelia, Ireland, 07 05 22

Was recently seen by Dr. Grant. I'm a nervous patient and he and the dental nurse reassured me at all times. Dr. Grant explained the steps to the procedure really well, so I felt very much in good hands. He also distracted me, so I felt less worried. The receptionists were also very friendly and welcoming. Can highly recommend him and team Beechwood Dental.

Reva Dental - Dental Clinic in Ireland

Reva Dental

John McCarron's dental practice has just changed its name to Reva Dental! In fact it's all change here at 21 William St - we've just launched our new website, reduced some of our treatment fees & extended our opening hours! And of course we are continuing to offer our patients the same high quality affordable dentistry as always....
Root canals from €320
At Reva Dental in Kilkenny City our aim is to assist patients in retaining the natural dentition whenever possible and a very useful treatment for retaining badly broken down or symptomatic teeth is root canal treatment. Root canal treatment is a procedure to remove the pulp (nerve) when it is either inflamed, dead or infected. The pulp extends along small canals inside the tooth. The pulp of a tooth can become damaged due to dental decay, trauma, fractures or leaking crowns and fillings. Where the damaged or dead pulp is not removed, it will often become infected and may result in a dental abscess. Root canal treatment is a pain free procedure and while there may be occasional post-operative symptoms from this treatment the vast majority of cases resolve without post-operative pain. Following root treatment it might be necessary to crown a tooth but this would be discussed before any treatment would commence.
Dentist Consultation from €30
Regular check ups and professional cleaning are essential to protect the health of your teeth and gums. At your dental consultation your teeth, gums and mouth will be carefully examined to ensure you are in good oral health. After the examination we will discuss with you any requirements you may have and offer advice on how to protect your teeth. Depending on the condition of your teeth and your previous dental treatments your dentist will usually recommend a dental check up at least once a year. At your check up appointment a full examination will be carried out on the oral soft tissue to ensure that it is healthy.
Dental Crowns from €500
On occasion a tooth may have significant damage which can not be repaired using a filling. As we recommend retaining the natural tooth where possible a patient can consider the option of crowning a tooth. This involves placing a crown over the damaged tooth. There are many different types of crowns and at Reva Dental in Kilkenny our preference is to recommended either all porcelain crowns or porcelain bonded to white gold crowns. This is consistent with our philosophy of using only the highest quality materials to ensure the best and longest lasting result. All crowns look like natural teeth once complete and are matched to your own dentition. If a tooth has been previously root treated it is often necessary to increase the strength of the tooth by placing a fitting called a ‘post and core’ in the tooth. These posts improve the strength and durability of the restored tooth. It is our policy to use laboratory fabricated white gold posts for the best clinical results. Our dentists will be happy to discuss all of your options with you and provide a written quote before any treatment is carried out.

I am over the moon with my lovely new smile and healthy teethJeanette, Ireland, 22 02 21

I began my appointments with Nick over 2 years ago. It was several years since I had been to any dentist and I just did not know where to start. From the moment I met Nick and the team I felt at ease and confident that I was in the best of care. Nick is a complete expert and visionary in his field, not to mention a perfectionist. I trusted him fully with every step of the process and committed myself to this wonderful clinic. I received numerous extensive treatments including crown, implant, extractions and orthodontic treatment. It was the best decision I ever made and I am over the moon with my lovely new smile and healthy teeth. An absolute credit to the dental profession and an asset to any patient who is in a position to choose this clinic.

Root canals from €250
Root canal treatment is the preferred way to treat an infection in the nerve center of the tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp is the soft, inner core of the tooth that consists of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When the pulp is diseased or injured and cant repair itself, it dies. The most common cause of pulp death is a cracked tooth or a deep cavity. Both of these problems can let bacteria enter the pulp. Bacteria can cause an infection inside the tooth. Left without treatment, pus builds up at the root tip, in the jawbone, forming a "pus-pocket" called an abscess. Usually pain and swelling will result. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist. At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling using thin files (as seen in the first x-ray). A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. About 90 percent of root canals are successful and the pain does not return. However, sometimes a root canal needs to be redone or the tooth extracted.

My advice is to make an appointment and you will not be disappointedJess, Ireland, 04 10 23

First time since moving to Dublin that I made an appointment to see a dentist. Brian was AMAZING! I came in for a cleaning and he was so kind and gentle. My advice is to make an appointment and you will not be disappointed! I have had anxiety with dentists in the past as I have had problems with my gums and teeth, needing plenty of work.
