What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is performed for dental procedures for anxious patients by administering medications to help them relax. Many patients avoid getting the required dental help because of their fear of the dentist. Sedation dentistry is performed to ensure that nervous patients enjoy healthy mouths and teeth.

What are the types of dental sedation?

The different types of dental sedation are; inhalation sedation, for patients requiring mild sedation also called anxiolysis; oral sedation, by asking patients to swallow a pill; TENS, using electrical impulses to numb the area; topical anaesthesia, using a swab to numb the area; or intra-venous sedation, for patients requiring moderate sedation and general anaesthesia for patients requiring deep sedation. General anaesthesia is used for patients only in a hospital and not in a dentist chair.

Is Sedation Dentistry painful?

Oral sedation, inhalation sedation, TENS and topical sedation are not painful. Intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia need to be injected and patients may feel pain when the sedative is injected.

When can I travel by air after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should travel by air two days after sedation dentistry. They should take the advice of their dentist before embarking on their journey.

How long does recovery after Sedation Dentistry take?

Recovery from dental sedation takes between 40 to 90 minutes. Recovery depends on the type of sedation administered.

What after care is required after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should rest for at least three hours after sedation dentistry. They should not eat for at least four hours, until the anaesthesia wears off. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should resume work at least one day after sedation dentistry. They should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least two days after sedation dentistry. They should follow all dietary prescriptions given by their dentist correctly.

Sedation for dental treatments from €150
If you, or someone you know, is very anxious about undergoing dental treatment then you would benefit greatly from having treatment carried out under intravenous sedation. I.V. sedation is a procedure whereby a sedative drug is administered intravenously prior to having dental treatment. The sedative effects of the drug last for approximately 2 hours, allowing the dentist to complete all the treatment without any fear or apprehension. I.V. sedation is an effective, safer and less costly alternative to general anaesthesia and is available at this dental practice.

This is no ordinary Dentist Clinic, it is warm and welcoming. It was my first visit. Avril, the Dentist, her assuring Assistant and reception team are advanced in their approach to the Client.I don't like injections or drill equipment, Avril takes that extra care talking through each process which is refreshing.I felt no need to tense up during the injection, filing and cleaning works. The results are excellent. The dentist has a great sense of humor and a very gentle touchNita, Ireland, 05 12 17

Apart from being terrified of the dentist, I was also hugely embarrassed to go because of the awful state of my teeth and gums. I was finally driven there when one of my teeth fell out! I went to Paul Hennessy and he was really great. I tend to talk a mile a minute when I'm nervous and he was a saint, taking it all in his stride. Apart from being a great dentist, Paul has a great sense of humor and a very gentle touch. I have been back several times now and have lost my fear and am tackling my teeth at last! Thank you, Paul and the amazing nurses for helping me so much.

I was overwhelmed with how professional and friendly everyone wasOrlagh, Ireland, 04 03 20

I was so impressed from start to finish with shields dental practice. I started going to them in their Castletroy practice last year and from the girls on reception to the dental nurses/hygienist/ dentists including Zena and the lovely dentist who whitened my teeth (with glasses) I was overwhelmed with how professional and friendly everyone was. This year I was referred to Cormac he was absolutely superb. I needed a specific treatment for my teeth grinding as well as a crown. Not only was he extremely professional but also super caring and brought me back for 2 further check-ups to ensure all was well. Both practices in Castletroy and south circular rd are so modern with a lovely homely feel to it coffee making machine facility’s a clinic coordinator to advise of delays and fantastic adds on their tv that explains dental issues in a very clear easily understood way. Well done shields and all your staff ... SUPERB
