What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is performed for dental procedures for anxious patients by administering medications to help them relax. Many patients avoid getting the required dental help because of their fear of the dentist. Sedation dentistry is performed to ensure that nervous patients enjoy healthy mouths and teeth.

What are the types of dental sedation?

The different types of dental sedation are; inhalation sedation, for patients requiring mild sedation also called anxiolysis; oral sedation, by asking patients to swallow a pill; TENS, using electrical impulses to numb the area; topical anaesthesia, using a swab to numb the area; or intra-venous sedation, for patients requiring moderate sedation and general anaesthesia for patients requiring deep sedation. General anaesthesia is used for patients only in a hospital and not in a dentist chair.

Is Sedation Dentistry painful?

Oral sedation, inhalation sedation, TENS and topical sedation are not painful. Intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia need to be injected and patients may feel pain when the sedative is injected.

When can I travel by air after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should travel by air two days after sedation dentistry. They should take the advice of their dentist before embarking on their journey.

How long does recovery after Sedation Dentistry take?

Recovery from dental sedation takes between 40 to 90 minutes. Recovery depends on the type of sedation administered.

What after care is required after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should rest for at least three hours after sedation dentistry. They should not eat for at least four hours, until the anaesthesia wears off. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should resume work at least one day after sedation dentistry. They should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least two days after sedation dentistry. They should follow all dietary prescriptions given by their dentist correctly.

A chose this clinic on a friend’s recommendation and had my dermal fillers done here. I had no problems whatsoever. I’m happy with everything that was done. I’d definitely recommend them. Touchstone Dentistry - Dental Clinic in Ireland

I was very pleased with the standard of treatment and the careful, methodical way it was doneAndrew, Ireland, 13 02 18

Possibly leaky filling (different dental practice) led to an infection. Decided to switch practices and gave Touchstone a try. During the first visit, X-rays were taken and the most likely source of the pain was confirmed. The filling was removed and a temporary filling put in. I was given antibiotics and painkillers to tackle the infection and inflammation. The decision was taken then to see how things were working out after 2 weeks, in case a root canal treatment might be required. Within a couple of days, it felt good as new and during the next visit, it was clear that things were going well and that a permanent filling could be done. I was very pleased with the standard of treatment and the careful, methodical way it was carried out. The 2 week period between visits meant that possibly unnecessary and expensive root canal treatment could be avoided. I really appreciated this approach. Obviously, two visits cost more than one, but it was reasonable overall and I considered it to be good value. The medical centre was surprisingly large and well fitted out. The staff in reception were very friendly and my dentist (Dr. Ivan Woulfe) and dental nurse were superb.

Ratoath Dental Centre - Dr Conor Irwin

This was the best decision everGemma, Ireland, 13 12 20

Totally new experience with Dr Conor Irwin it. Was fantastic from start to finish he is a total gent! He wasn’t there for the money but 100% there for The honest result ..before venturing to Ratoath dental I had previously (prior dentist) been told I needed 12 fillings and a root canal when in fact I only needed 3 fillings, as you can imagine I second-guessed when not in pain so that’s why I ended up going for a second opinion with Conor! I really enjoyed my experience! ... yes enjoyed it ... between Yvonne on reception & Lorna the hygienist they were exceptional and so welcoming/ helpful! I had become very paranoid about my teeth as they had started to get gaps between them which I never had before so I ended up getting 4 porcelain veneers as over time my teeth started to decay from Acid reflux. This was the best decision ever! I’m so happy with them Although I had a rocky start with my temps as they just wouldn't go with the flow ... they kept falling out! But I never lost faith and either did Conor he was the most obliging when I needed an emergency app while waiting on my forever veneers and like that it was a quick visit with the utmost professionalism and just general charismatic feel the place gives. I’m So happy with my teeth that’s to all the staff who made it happen for me! Thank you ❤️

The whole process was quick and pain-freeSheryl, Ireland, 13 03 18

Some of my co-workers had used this clinic and they told me it was a great choice. I’d also read some good reviews, so I went to them for a wisdom tooth extraction. The whole process was quick and pain-free. They quoted me a price beforehand and the treatment was value for money. The staff were very helpful and quite willing to accommodate me. In general, the clinic was fine. Dr. Higgins was so nice and he did a good job. I’d recommend him to anyone needing an extraction.

Sedation for dental treatments from €150
If you, or someone you know, is very anxious about undergoing dental treatment then you would benefit greatly from having treatment carried out under intravenous sedation. I.V. sedation is a procedure whereby a sedative drug is administered intravenously prior to having dental treatment. The sedative effects of the drug last for approximately 2 hours, allowing the dentist to complete all the treatment without any fear or apprehension. I.V. sedation is an effective, safer and less costly alternative to general anaesthesia and is available at this dental practice.
