Qualified from Trinity College Dental School in 1987 and completed his Specialist Training in Orthodontics in 1995. From 1995-2004 Paul held Academic Positions in Trinity College Dublin including Senior Lecturer/ Consultant and Head of Department of Public and Child Dental Health. During this time, his clinical work involved tertiary referral work such as management of cleft palate and craniofacial patients as well as complex cases involving multiple dental disciplines. His research interests included orthodontic mechanics, dental education and orthodontic treatment outcomes in association with the University of Oslo. In 2004 Paul established an Orthodontic Specialist Practice and continues to be involved in Orthodontic Specialist Education part-time. A graduate of Birmingham University Dental School, where he graduated with a Distinction in Clinical Dentistry, after completing an elective period in the University of Texas, San Antonio University's Oral Surgery Department.

He graduated from the Dublin Dental School and Hospital in 2006 having attained an Honours degree. On graduating he returned to work there as a House Office for one year.
