What is Bad Breath?

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a condition where patients have a bad odour coming from their mouths. It may be a rare temporary condition or it may be a chronic on-going condition.

What causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath is usually caused by poor oral hygiene. The bacteria that forms between teeth when patients do not brush or floss regularly cause a bad smell. Garlic and other food with strong smells can contribute to halitosis. Smoking and some medications, including chemotherapy medications, cause halitosis. Patients who go on diets sometimes suffer halitosis and patients with a health condition called dry mouth, where the mouth does not produce sufficient saliva suffer halitosis.  Fear of flying or public speaking, etc, can also trigger halitosis.

How is Bad Breath treated?

Dentists or dental hygienists will professionally clean teeth to treat halitosis. They will also give patients correct dental hygiene instructions to stop bad breath. They will treat dental problems like gum diseases to stop bad breath.

How long does recovery take after receiving a treatment for Bad Breath?

The recovery from halitosis depends on the cause and method used to treat bad breath. Some patients feel pain or sensitivity after professional dental cleaning but should recover within a day.  Patients may take a week or two to recover from gum surgery. Patients with halitosis caused by smoking will recover a few weeks after ceasing smoking.

What after care is required after receiving a treatment for Bad Breath?

Patients should practice correct dental and oral hygiene. They should follow the advice of their dentist or hygienist correctly.

O'Connor Moore Dental Practice

076 680 1055 Wine Street, Sligo
Rating from 23 Reviews Exceptionally caring and professionalJane, Ireland, 08 Jan 16

I chose this clinic on recommendation from a friend. I had ongoing issues with fillings and crowns. I found O'Connor Moore to be the most competitive price wise and also exceptionally caring and professional. A very professional and caring practice. The girls on reception are lovely and make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. The standard of hygiene is exceptional as is the state of the art equipment. I was advised throughout my treatment of what was happening and why and was constantly reassured by Dr Moore and the nursing staff. I would highly recommend O’Connor Moore Dental Practice to anyone.

Rating from 5 Reviews highly recommend this dentist.Alma, Ireland, 19 Aug 14

I highly recommend this dentist. The dentist went out of his way to give the treatment I needed to suit my budget. This is the first dentist I visited where it was not all about making money and more emphasis on the patients needs and happiness. The treatment and service was second to none.

I am amazed and delightedTina, Galway, 17 Nov 14

Dental Cap The dentist did a fantastic job of repairing my front teeth, they were a mess. I am amazed and delighted at what she was able to do. I thought they would cost a fortune to repair. Emer, the dentist, and her assistant were friendly and very patient. I was a bit nervous.

Rating from 7 Reviews You will not be disappointed!Anne-Marie, dublin, 19 Jan 12

I cannot recommend the Dental Suite highly enough. I was immediately put at ease by the caring and gentle manner in which Dr. Gillian and Sharon treated me during my visit last week. I had a veneer fitted for the first time and they explained every step of the procedure very clearly. I was very much impressed by how eager they were to ensure that I was happy with my treatment. If you are looking for a friendly but professionally run family dentist with excellent prices go to The Dental Suite. You will not be disappointed!

I'm delighted that my fillings have settled in without any after pain or tenderness.Lynn, Dublin, 16 Jan 12

After many years being a nervous patient I have finally found a dentist that is friendly, very thorough, observant and mindful of my pain threshold (gives the injection time to kick in). I'm delighted that my fillings have settled in without any after pain or tenderness. Gillian and Sharon gave me lots of advice on easy things to do at home to protect my teeth from my grinding habit and how to avoid overbrushing. Professional, great easy access location, lots of parking, modern equipment and lots of treatment options. Will be recommending to family and friends.

Forster Court Dental Centre

Rating from 8 Reviews Excellent jobDamien, Ireland, 27 Apr 12

Fillings, Cleaning I would highly recommend this clinic. Mary and her team do an excellent job. It has a very friendly atmosphere and Mary has you completely at ease during the visit. Bronagh is also a great hygienist. A couple of treatments by her saved me at least €1,000 (amount quoted by another dentist to get my gum disease sorted!!) They also ring you the day before to remind you about your upcoming visit - the call only takes a minute but it is great to be reminded as I tend to forget my appointments :-)

keep up the good workGino, Galway, Ireland, 20 Feb 12

Gum and bad breath treatment..It was really good. I am a first year student in NUIG and the hygienist gave me a special student discount of 10%. I had my gums cleaned elsewhere at a cheaper surgery. They only spent max 15 minutes doing a minimum light scrape. Since Forster Court Dental I noticed a huge improvement . My gums don't bleed anymore and my breadth is back good again. The atmosphere was really relaxing and I felt that the staff were genuinely concerned for my dental welfare. Thanks guys...I have an appointment made to get an exam and replace some old manky mercury fillings with the dentist after the Easter exams...keep up the good work. PS. Some nice eye candy too.

Rating from 2 Reviews The whole area is modern, sleek, and the staff are warm and welcoming.Anastasia, Ireland, 18 Jul 16

My two children (seven and four) and myself are patients of Ganter Crowe. I have had a number of treatments (both with Michael and Shona), which have been expertly (and compassionately done; a nervous patient me!). Thanks to the brilliant rapport which all of the staff immediately established with both of the children. They quite happily attend their check-ups. Wholeheartedly recommend this clinic to all. I chose this clinic for us based on a recommendation from a friend, and she was spot-on. The whole area is modern, sleek, and the staff are warm and welcoming.

Talked me through my dental options.Lisa, dublin, 27 Aug 15

I saw Dr. Vaughan for an assessment of my dental problems and X-rays. I am a very nervous patient, having had some not so nice dental experiences previously. Dr. Vaughan made me feel at ease; he talked me through my options and explained the treatment I will need. Very positive. I will return next month for treatment. I would recommend this clinic to anyone who is fearful of attending the dentist. Dr. Vaughan was very kind and honest. Clinic itself is very clean and conveniently located
