What is meant by wisdom tooth extraction?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars that are found on each side of the upper and lower jaw. They are the last teeth to erupt and often do not erupt but remain below the gumline. Impacted, or crowded, teeth that have not erupted cause pain and swelling. The dentist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon will extract the tooth for the patients' comfort. The extraction of a wisdom tooth takes from ten minutes to one hour.

Are wisdom teeth extractions painful?

Local anaesthesia is injected before a wisdom tooth is extracted. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure. Anxious patients are given a sedative before the procedure.

What is the recovery time after wisdom teeth extractions?

It takes up to three weeks to completely recover from a wisdom tooth extraction.

When can I travel by air after having wisdom teeth extracted?

Patients can travel by air two days after having wisdom teeth extracted, after consulting with their dentist or surgeon.

What care is required after having wisdom teeth extracted?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should gently rinse their mouth with salt water frequently. They should not rinse their mouths or brush their teeth vigorously for a few days. Patients should sleep with their head elevated. They should avoid vigorous exercise and lifting heavy objects for at least a week. They should use ice packs to reduce any swelling. They should not eat very hot or very cold food for a few days.

Everything was explained clearly, and I never felt rushed or judgedHannah, Ireland, 20 05 25

Couldn’t recommend Seapoint Clinic more. The staff are honestly some of the friendliest I’ve ever come across, really warm and welcoming from the moment I walked in. I’m quite a nervous patient, but they made the whole experience feel calm and reassuring. Everything was explained clearly, and I never felt rushed or judged. The place is spotless and has a lovely, calm atmosphere too. I left feeling surprisingly at ease and actually feel good about coming back (which is saying a lot for me!). Big thanks to the whole team.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Extractions €130 - €140
At Navan Dental, we consider tooth extraction to be a last resort, and do everything to maintain the lifespan of your natural teeth. However, sometimes, when the prognosis is poor, a tooth simply cannot be saved. But don’t worry, at Navan Dental we can offer anyone in Navan, Dublin and Co. Meath an affordable tooth extraction service. The most common reasons for needing an extraction are: Wisdom teeth removal If there isn’t enough space for wisdom teeth to grow at the back of your mouth, they can become impacted, causing pain, swelling and/or infection, so may need to be removed. Overcrowding Sometimes dentists extract teeth to prepare the mouth for orthodontics. The goal of orthodontics is to properly align the teeth, which may not be possible if your teeth are too big for your mouth. Likewise, if a tooth can’t break through the gum, because there’s no room in the mouth for it, we may recommend extraction. Infection If tooth decay or damage extends to the pulp – the centre of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels – bacteria in the mouth can enter the pulp, leading to infection. If infection is so severe that antibiotics do not cure it, extraction may be needed to prevent the spread of infection. Your dentist will then talk you through the options for a permanent replacement.

Absolutely fantastic experience. Dr. John Murphy has a keen attention to detail. You feel as though you are in safe hands. You come out with more insight into what’s going on with your teeth and beyond. It’s clear that he puts his patient first above all else and has your best interests at heart. He is a rare find. I wanted my mercury fillings removed and am so glad I went here. Great job.
