What is a Dental X-Ray?

Dental X-rays are procedures where photographs of the teeth and mouth are taken to diagnose dental and oral disease or adverse dental conditions. An extensive examination of the patient’s mouth and teeth is done on the first visit to a dentist. This usually involves the use of X-rays. X-rays help dentists detect dental and oral problems that are not easily visible to the naked eye.

How is a Dental X-Ray performed?

Dental X-rays are either intra-oral or extra-oral. The film is placed outside the mouth and the image is taken for an extra-oral X-ray. The film is placed inside the mouth and the image is taken for an intra-oral X-ray. Depending on the machine used, patients may feel pressure on their cheek for a few moments when the dentist focuses the camera.

What does a Dental X-Ray show?

X-rays allow the dentist to see, bone loss, gum disease, dental infections, positioning of wisdom teeth, oral cysts or abscesses, tumours, jaw fractures and foreign objects in the mouth or teeth.

Are Dental X-Rays safe?

Dental X-rays are the safest among X-rays and patients are exposed to very little radiation. Dentists use digital X-rays that are less harmful than traditional X-rays. Patients should tell the dentist about any existing health condition or if they are pregnant.  The dentist will not use X-rays to risk the health of patients unless absolutely necessary.

What are the alternatives to taking a Dental X-Ray?

Alternatives to the dental X-ray include Cari vu, a diagnostic device using transillumination technology and the Diagnodent laser assisted diagnostic device.

They were quick painless smooth and friendlyAlex, US, 26 02 20

I was very impressed from start to finish. Very kind professional staff. Because I told them I was staying an extra day they referred me to a nice clean hotel with a warm pool and I also received a discount because of the referral to the hotel. The first day they gave me a free X-ray and consultation and the work that needed to be done. Once I agreed to the important procedures needed for my teeth. Next day I came back for the for that needed to be done. They were quick painless smooth and friendly. I really was impressed with the modern facilities their professionalism and their prices were maybe a tad bit more expensive than their neighbouring competition but knowing there was a dental surgeon on deck and reading their positive reviews I felt safe and although it’s only been 24 hours since my treatment I am very happy with the work and how I was treated. I’ve already recommended this place to my friends and family. Totally worth it and it’s a safe place!

Dental X-Ray
Dental X-ray examinations provide valuable information that helps your dentist evaluate your oral health. With the help of radiographs (the term for pictures taken with X-rays), your dentist can look at what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums. If you have questions about your dental X-ray exam, talk with your dentist.
Digital Dental X-Ray free
Dental x-rays are critical for many reasons. They allow a dentist to detect tooth decay, abscessed or impacted teeth, and simply overall tooth density and health of current fillings, crowns, etc. They can also indicate if someone is in the early stages of gum disease and can help a dentist take preventative measures in addressing the problem.Digital x-rays are one of the newest and most innovative forms of x-ray imaging. This is an alternative to traditional photographic film used for x-ray purposes. There are many advantages to this alternative procedure, especially in the field of dentistry. One main advantage is that there is less radiation exposure to the patient. Another advantage is simply the efficiency in transferring and enhancing images, which makes it easier to go over with the results with the patient.Digital dental x-rays are an important innovation that has led the way for safer and more efficient preventative dental care.
Digital Panoramic Dental X-Ray from $50
A panoramic x-ray requires a special machine that rotates around the head. The x-ray captures the entire jaws and teeth in one shot. It is used to plan treatment for dental implants, check for impacted wisdom teeth, and detect jaw problems. A panoramic x-ray is not good for detecting cavities, unless the decay is very advanced and deep.In addition, many dentists are taking x-rays using digital technology. The image runs through a computer. The amount of radiation transmitted during the procedure is less than traditional methods

Overall I'm very pleased with my experience here and I would recommend this clinic to anyoneMark, US, 29 11 16

I came across this clinic following a google search and chose to come here because of the good reviews it had on WhatClinic and how it looked, it looked like a well run place. My first impression of the clinic was very good, they took me in straight away despite the fact I was early and one of the members of staff came to meet me when I was having a little trouble locating the clinic. I came here for dental implants and it went very well, I'm still a little bit sore, but the doctor has said he'll get in contact with me to let me know what I should do in the next couple of days. They called me once already a week after my treatment to ensure everything was going okay. Overall I'm very pleased with my experience here and I would recommend this clinic to anyone. The treatments are good value and are similar to the prices they display online so there's no surprises on that front.

Dental Radiographs are commonly called x-rays. Dentists use radiographs for many reasons: to find hidden dental structures, malignant or benign masses, bone loss, and cavities.A radiographic image is formed by a controlled burst of X-ray radiation which penetrates oral structures at different levels, depending on varying anatomical densities, before striking the film or sensor. Teeth appear lighter because less radiation penetrates them to reach the film. Dental caries, infections and other changes in the bone density, and the periodontal ligament, appear darker because X-rays readily penetrate these less dense structures. Dental restorations (fillings, crowns) may appear lighter or darker, depending on the density of the material. The dosage of X-ray radiation received by a dental patient is typically small (around 0.150 mSv for a full mouth series, according to the American Dental Association website), equivalent to a few days' worth of background environmental radiation exposure.

They seemed pleased with their past resultsSusan, US, 20 01 20

Very tiny dental office. Four chairs and a couch crammed into a reception area along with a reception counter. The receptionist seemed knowledgeable about the policies and procedures of the office. Both my husband and I had appointments for a consult. We were first seen by a very young general dentist. He seemed knowledgeable. He poked and prodded and took the dental X-rays. He then told me what he thought I needed based on his exam. I then saw the implant specialist. He sent me across the way to have a panoramic X-ray before finalizing his treatment plan for me. (The panoramic X-ray cost me $150. I reasoned that I could use it for all the consults I had scheduled. Turns out the second dentist did a more in-depth 3D scan but didn’t charge me. We’ll see if the third dentist uses it.). In the meantime, the dentist saw my husband, who had requested an implant for a missing tooth pulled this past summer. My husband jumped in with both feet and accepted the offer to get an implant right then and there. He had his teeth cleaned for $30 and an implant inserted for $900 in about a half-hour. He will return in several months to have the crown put on the implant (additional charge). He was given a prescription for antibiotics and pain pills, which he filled next door at a pharmacy for about $15. Oddly enough it was the receptionist who wrote and signed the prescription. My treatment plan was more complex. It involved several implants for long-missing teeth, a sinus lift, new crowns for several front teeth. Some of the work they would do right away and some after months of healing took place. I declined to have anything done as I had appointments with two more dentists for consults. I left with an estimate for $7700, which is a whole lot better than the plan from back home of $22,000. The two things that I was not particularly comfortable with was; 1) When I paid the bill with a personal check, I was asked not to fill in the “payable to” section. I inquired as to the reason for that. I was first laughingly told by the receptionist that it was so she could go shopping. 2). The two exam rooms are barely big enough for a dental chair, the dentist and a dental tech are connected. It’s actually one bigger room set up exactly the same on both sides of a separation wall. You can hear everything that is being said and done on the other side of the wall. But I don’t believe Mexico has a HIPPA law! I believe there was a third small exam room located next to the tiny bathroom. This is just not the office for someone with claustrophobia or privacy concerns. Communication was not an issue, as all staff I had interaction with spoke English. I also observed good hygiene practices. Three of the patients I spoke with while waiting were repeated patients. They seemed pleased with their past results. My husband’s implant seems to be healing well. It required nothing for pain after the first 24 hours. Dental Departures facilitated this visit and sent us several appointment reminders.
