What is Bad Breath?

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a condition where patients have a bad odour coming from their mouths. It may be a rare temporary condition or it may be a chronic on-going condition.

What causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath is usually caused by poor oral hygiene. The bacteria that forms between teeth when patients do not brush or floss regularly cause a bad smell. Garlic and other food with strong smells can contribute to halitosis. Smoking and some medications, including chemotherapy medications, cause halitosis. Patients who go on diets sometimes suffer halitosis and patients with a health condition called dry mouth, where the mouth does not produce sufficient saliva suffer halitosis.  Fear of flying or public speaking, etc, can also trigger halitosis.

How is Bad Breath treated?

Dentists or dental hygienists will professionally clean teeth to treat halitosis. They will also give patients correct dental hygiene instructions to stop bad breath. They will treat dental problems like gum diseases to stop bad breath.

How long does recovery take after receiving a treatment for Bad Breath?

The recovery from halitosis depends on the cause and method used to treat bad breath. Some patients feel pain or sensitivity after professional dental cleaning but should recover within a day.  Patients may take a week or two to recover from gum surgery. Patients with halitosis caused by smoking will recover a few weeks after ceasing smoking.

What after care is required after receiving a treatment for Bad Breath?

Patients should practice correct dental and oral hygiene. They should follow the advice of their dentist or hygienist correctly.

Dr. Liam Ó Droma, B.D.S., N.U.I. - Dublin

2 Radharc an Oileáin, Harbour Road, Howth
Rating from 28 Reviews They have a lot of integrity and you would never worry about being ripped off hereLaura, Dublin, 04 Sep 18

I had orthodontic and dental treatment here over the past two years. Very very happy with results. Liam O'Droma is highly skilled and I would trust him completely. He gives honest advice about your treatment options and cares about the treatment he gives you. I am very nervous of needles and when I had to have a filling. I barely felt the needle and it barely noticed I was having a filling! This has never happened before! I'll never go to another dentist now. All the staff are lovely, especially Liam's assistant Suzanna who is just a lovely person and also seems to be very knowledgeable. They have a lot of integrity and you would never worry about being ripped off here. In fact, they are very affordable yet deliver a very high standard of care. You will be in safe hands here. I would highly recommend them, especially if you are nervous about going to the dentist.

Donnybrook Dental Practice

114 Morehampton Road, Donnybrook, Dublin, Dublin 4
Rating from 5 Reviews The best I've been to.Philip, Ireland, 03 Jun 15

Very thorough exam with some great advice. Excellent manner. I had X-rays taken and a bit of filling on premolar. Might need root canal if nerve dies; advised to wait a few weeks and see if it settles. He charged 50 Euros - amazingly cheap for all the time and work done. I will recommend this clinic to my family and friends. 10/10 The clinic was recommended by a friend and was easy to find with lots of parking close by. The staff are very friendly and the young dentist obviously loves his job and cares for his patients. The best and cheapest I have ever been to in Dublin.

The Fresh Breath Clinic- Specialists in Bad Breath Elimination

67 Upper Churchtown Road, Churchtown, Dublin 14
Rating from 20 Reviews Fantastic experience during my tooth bonding.Patrick, Ireland, 07 Aug 15

Wow. My first ever visit to a dentist. I had heard and grew up hearing scary stories of dentists, but this was totally the opposite. So, visiting a dentist for the first time ever at thirty-one years of age could be both a nervous and daunting task. The doctors really made me feel relaxed and were awesomely nice and professional. It was really lovely, and I got my broken tooth of ten years ago fixed. Now I can smile happily. I also did some teeth cleanings; it was really fantastic. All smiles from everyone I met, both the doctors and all patient's leaving. Really fantastic experience for me. I couldn't help but smile also when leaving after my tooth bonding. I will definitely recommend to anyone and everyone.

Touchstone Dentistry

Mulhuddart Village, Dublin
Rating from 15 Reviews I was very pleased with the standard of treatment and the careful, methodical way it was doneAndrew, Ireland, 13 Feb 18

Possibly leaky filling (different dental practice) led to an infection. Decided to switch practices and gave Touchstone a try. During the first visit, X-rays were taken and the most likely source of the pain was confirmed. The filling was removed and a temporary filling put in. I was given antibiotics and painkillers to tackle the infection and inflammation. The decision was taken then to see how things were working out after 2 weeks, in case a root canal treatment might be required. Within a couple of days, it felt good as new and during the next visit, it was clear that things were going well and that a permanent filling could be done. I was very pleased with the standard of treatment and the careful, methodical way it was carried out. The 2 week period between visits meant that possibly unnecessary and expensive root canal treatment could be avoided. I really appreciated this approach. Obviously, two visits cost more than one, but it was reasonable overall and I considered it to be good value. The medical centre was surprisingly large and well fitted out. The staff in reception were very friendly and my dentist (Dr. Ivan Woulfe) and dental nurse were superb.
