When teeth are missing and there are teeth on either side of the space a bridge is the ideal way to replace the missing teeth. Replacement teeth can be attached to two crowns constructed for the two teeth on either side of the open space, this is called a bridge because it bridges the open space. The space left from missing teeth may cause one of several problems. Teeth may drift into the space changing your bite. This changed bite may result in sore jaws, gum disease, or decay (due to more difficult hygiene). Bridges are not removable by the patient. As with other types of crowns (caps), a bridge can be made of metal, gold or porcelain, or a combination of these two. In areas of your mouth that are under less stress, such as your front teeth, a cantilever bridge may be used. Cantilever bridges are used when there are teeth on only one side of the open space. All of your teeth play an important role in speaking, chewing and maintaining proper alignment of other teeth, not to mention your appearance, so it is vital to replace any that are lost.

The Maryland dental bridge is one of a few types of bridges used to replace teeth. Named for the University of Maryland, where it was developed, this bridge is resin-retained and commonly used to replace the front teeth. A pontic (false tooth) is attached to metal bands that are hidden with a white-colored composite resin and attached to the back sides of the teeth on either side of the pontic.A Maryland bridge consists of a metal framework with a porcelain tooth baked on to the front of the framework. The framework then ends up as a false tooth with two metal wings on the side. These metal wings are prepared to have a porous surface so that they can receive a bonding agent, and then the wings are bonded to the back sides of the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. The two crowns holding it in place are attached to your teeth on each side of the false tooth. This is known as a fixed bridge. This procedure is used to replace one, or more missing teeth. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out of your mouth as you might do with removable partial dentures. The dental bridge can be completed in a week at a reasonable price, without complications. The natural tooth must be adequately strong to provide good support, while the gap of the lost tooth must not be too wide. It is essential to have a natural tooth in the front and back of the gap for the bridge to be effective. It is also necessary to grind / drill the natural tooth next to the gap so it can support the bridge. If either the tooth, or crown is damaged, then the entire two teeth and the dental bridge must be removed. The dental bridge cannot be used again on a permanent basis.
