Mike Ward Counselling - Psychotherapy Clinic in Ireland

Mike Ward Counselling

Charter House, Liosban Ind Estate, Galway
The decision to come to therapy is by no means an easy choice. It can take great effort to summon up the courage to speak about deep and personal issues which are affecting our lives and of course, making change in our lives can be a difficult task. Therapy can offer a helping hand along the way, it may help us to achieve personal growth, it may aid us to achieve a sense of stability and an outcome of good mental health. Perhaps you have been suffering mental anguish and no longer feel that you can cope with your life situation. You may feel that you are immobilised by anxiety or that you are affected by sudden bouts of unexplained anger. Have you been affected by depression or have you ever had suicidal thoughts? Do you feel unhappy or stuck in a marriage/relationship and feel that you are unable to resolve your relationship difficulties? Or are you simply stuck in a rut in some area of your life and need some help in moving on? In our therapy sessions, I will work with you to explore issues, past or present, which are emotionally difficult and which are affecting the quality of your life. Together we will explore ways in which you will be able to lead a fuller and a happier life. Families and friends can be great resources but sometimes we need an objective view of our situation to help us see, more clearly, our way forward.

I incorporate a Person-Centered approach. The person-centered approach views the person as their own best authority on their own experience. I also adopt when required a Psychodynamic approach. Psychodynamic psychotherapy considers that people repress past traumatic experiences, which can affect their personalities and behaviors in relationships.  The goal of talking to a counsellor / psychotherapist is to help you make sense of what is going on in your life. Reflecting on your past experiences and how they impact on the present, can help you understand the person you are today. I believe in the strength and courage of anyone seeking therapy and facing their struggles head-on. Counselling can give time and an opportunity to develop insight and understanding of how you exist in your world and explore aspects of your life that may be inhibiting personal growth and can provide new ways to move forward. This insight is what can make change possible as our patterns of behaviour are explored and understood and as a consequence make it easier to make new choices and decisions. I understand that the counselling work can be challenging but for most people counselling is a life changing, positive experience that creates greater self-awareness and understanding of our world. As part of my practice I receive ongoing supervision to maintain well-informed, ethical practice. I am also committed to my own continual professional development and regularly attend courses and training forums, alongside reading relevant literature, research and articles as a means of keeping my counselling skills up to date.
