Yellow Fever is a serious and sometimes fatal viral infection transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes that bite during daylight hours. The infection is spread from infected monkeys and humans and is considered to be one of the most lethal viral diseases. Yellow Fever mosquitoes are often found in tropical parts of Africa and South America. Facts:There is no cure for Yellow Fever. Treatment is aimed at reducing symptoms for the comfort of the patient.Yellow Fever occurs in tropical parts of South America and Sub-Saharan Africa, most commonly West Africa.Common in jungle and urban areas especially during rainy season.Prevention There is no specific treatment for Yellow Fever. However, Yellow Fever vaccine is effective and available. People travelling to areas where Yellow Fever may be present should be immunised. In addition, certain countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination or an exemption certificate before persons are permitted entry. Failure to provide a valid certificate can lead to a traveller being quarantined, immunised or denied entry. Armada Travel Clinic is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and has been authorised by NaTHNaC (as the regulatory body for England, Wales and Northern Ireland), to administer yellow fever vaccine in accordance with International Health Regulations (2005). What is Shingles? Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the area of skin supplied by the nerve. It is caused by a virus called the Varicella-zoster virus (this is the same virus that causes chickenpox). Shingles is sometimes called Herpes zoster. The symptoms of Shingles starts with tingling or burning in an area of the skin and is followed by the eruption of a painful rash usually on one side of the body or face that takes 2-4 weeks to resolve.  Shingles can occur at any age, but it is most common in people over the age of 50 years. About 1 in 4 people develop Shingles during their lifetime. It is also possible to get Shingles more than once, although fortunately fewer than 10% of people who have a first attack will have another one. Can Shingles be prevented? The good news is that there is now a Shingles vaccine available to people aged 50 and over. It has been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of older people developing Shingles, and even if you do develop Shingles then the disease is likely to affect you less severely. A national immunisation programme is available for those aged 70 - 79, but is being introduced in phases.  Can I be vaccinated privately?At Armada Travel Clinic we can offer it for those aged 50 or over. Yellow Fever: Yellow fever is a serious viral disease thats usually spread by a type of mosquito known as the Aedes aegypti mosquito. It can be prevented with a vaccination (see below). Yellow fever is a type of virus known as a flavivirus. The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites. It can be spread from one host to another, usually between monkeys, or from monkeys to humans, or from person to person. The mosquitoes live and breed in jungle and urban areas. See Yellow fever - causes for more information about how yellow fever is transmitted. Theres a vaccination for yellow fever. Some countries require a proof of vaccination (certificate) against yellow fever before they let you enter the country. You should have a yellow fever vaccination at least 10 days before your travel. This will allow enough time for your body to develop protection against the yellow fever infection.

Typhoid: Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by the Gram-negative bacillus Salmonella typhi. It is spread by the faecal-oral route and is therefore associated with poor sanitation and personal hygiene: Over 200 cases are notified in Britain each year. Most of these are contracted from people visiting friends and relatives (VFRs) in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Typhoid is endemic to areas of poor sanitation, eg Africa, Asia, Central and Southern America and the Caribbean. Avoiding contaminated water can help in preventing infection, but vaccination is recommended. The incubation period is 1-3 weeks. Around 10% of people infected can excrete the bacteria for up to three months. Nearly half become permanent carriers.[1]
