What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Dr. Liam Ó Droma, B.D.S., N.U.I. - Dublin - Dental Clinic in IrelandFeatured

Dr. Liam Ó Droma, B.D.S., N.U.I. - Dublin

2 Radharc an Oileáin, Harbour Road, Howth
Rating from 30 Reviews Good value for money and not to forget his emphasis on keeping up-to-date on implantology treatmentWerner, Ireland, 22 07 18

Most important point first: From experience with an implant (lower left 5). I can highly recommend Dr Liam Ó Droma. Excellence in all aspects. The consultation, advise preparation, treatment through all stages, first-class material, good value for money and not to forget his emphasis on keeping up-to-date on implantology treatments. I am not a newcomer to implants, I had a number of those done over the past 10 years, but none in Ireland, they were simply far too expensive here at the time. Most were done in Germany in a specialised, fairly high-tech clinic in Germany. Including flights and all still a lot cheaper than what I had found here. When a new problem appeared in 2017. I found Liam's clinic on the internet with a competitive offer and he fitted me in pretty quickly in his surgery in An Spidéal, Co. Galway. When approaching, you may be forgiven not to expect a first-class implant specialist working in what looks a bit like a "timber hut". What I saw inside was modern high-tech equipment standing idle and an assortment of second-hand armchairs in a tiny waiting room. When you are in the dentist's chair and Liam looks deep through his oversized looking glasses, you know you are in the right hands. He does not need high-tech and he knows what he is doing! After the crown was fitted, I have had no problem whatsoever. It pretty much feels like an original tooth, it fitted perfectly first time and did not need any adjustments. A most impressive proof of skilfulness. What I also found most amazing was how little blood was lost. I remember previous procedures when I looked like having been in a bad fist-fight. Blood all over and stitches having to be taken out later. Not so here; after the initial root extraction, there is hardly any bleeding. Thanks to his minimally invasive method and no stitches at all. Just a quick word on waiting times: yes, I also had to wait, and so had other patients when I was in treatment. Somewhere else, I had the experience of having an implant done in a "normal" dental practice working to strict timeslots. You did not have to wait long before treatment started, but it then got interrupted, restarted, interrupted again, and so on. I think normal dental work of check-ups, fillings and implants with potential complications do not mix well. I will rather patiently wait for an hour in the waiting room, but then have the uninterrupted attention when being treated. This is what Liam is doing. Thanks to all around Liam, Barbara, Arlene, Susanne and all. I found the clinic in An Spidéal, Co. Galway, through the internet search. It is in a beautiful area, but not terribly easy to get to from afar. As I said above, when approaching, you may be forgiven not to expect a first-class implant specialist working in what looks a bit like a "timber hut" at the back of a medical care centre. Outside the treatment room and ignoring a computer or two, the clinic has the charm of a kind of "old-worldly" mid-50s place.

Rating from 9 Reviews A family practice that delivers superior service and careMrs_Ann, Ireland, 04 04 18

Super Dental Clinic. I am a regular - every six months patient but needed some urgent care after Easter weekend. Saw Vic today at 12.00. I had filling and X-rays taken of other teeth to rule out any further issues. Back in the office and eating lunch by 2 pm! Super service - Wendy and Rachel a pleasure to deal with. A family practice that delivers superior service and care. The overall experience was excellent.

Ongar Dental Surgery - Dental Clinic in Ireland

Ongar Dental Surgery

Meridian Clinic, 1 The Avenue, Ongar
Rating from 10 Reviews It is a small clinic, so I felt like the staff were interested in me as a patientSanabel, Czech Republic, 17 09 18

I paid around 70 Euro for a check-up at this dentist. I’m not sure what other clinics are charging, but for a clean and a check, this seemed a bit expensive to me. That said, the service was great. I would recommend them. The clinic is clean and has everything you’d expect a clinic to have. It is a small clinic, so I felt like the staff were interested in me as a patient. I didn’t feel like I was just another number. They gave me all the attention I needed. It was a painless 25-minute check-up. The dentist was very skilled and knowledgeable. I thought he answered all my questions well and made some helpful product recommendations, too.

South Dublin Dental - Dr Alec Granville BDS MFDS RCSEd

South Dublin Dental

2 Brighton Rd, Foxrock, Dublin 18
Rating from 14 Reviews Warm and caring staff that made sure I had an appointment right away.Kathryn, Bahamas, 01 08 16

I am visiting Ireland from the Bahamas, and I had a dental emergency. The staff at South Dublin Dental went out of their way to get me an urgent appointment. I was seen by Dr. Alec Granville. He spent a great deal of time trying to replace my crown that had fallen out, and did so in a way that made it completely pain-free. Unfortunately, since the tooth below had broken, it was impossible to do so. He thoroughly explained the pros and cons of the different options I would have for this tooth upon my return home. Warm and caring staff that made sure I had an appointment right away even though I am not a current patient and would not be returning to their practice as I am a visitor to Ireland.
