What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Very good explanation of dental works proposed, also agreeing with my own suggestionsEty, Ireland, 29 06 18

Evaluation for suitability of a molar implant and separate crown. Also filling replaced. Crown and implant appear to be good value compared to my local dentist but the filling was more expensive. Treatment is ongoing. Found the clinic online with high marks for dental implants. I was treated by a female dentist and she will do the follow-up treatments also (going for crown prep. work in 2 weeks). Very good explanation of dental works proposed, also agreeing with my own suggestions (crowns first and implant later). Told I could "put up my hand" if needed during the works (which I did in order to swallow). A very helpful dental nurse also (I hope she will be there with the next treatment again). Small issue with a not too clean mirror (above my head) and a scan that had to be repeated (as the first one was not suitable for an implant).

I am really pleased with the results.Waxie, Ireland, 26 01 17

I had upper/lower eyes, neck and lower face surgery. I had a lot of fear prior to surgery of having visible scars. Mr Chan did a superb job. He was meticulous to the point where I can't even find scars. It is obvious that he takes great pride in his work. I have no problem in recommending Fuan, he is a fine surgeon and his work is exemplary. I am really pleased with the results. Blackrock clinic is great. The nurses are supportive and attentive. All pleasant and kind. I was looked after post opp. with pain relief because of a back problem. Hospital is clean and bright and a pleasure to stay.

The clinic was impressive and I’m glad I chose them. It was value for moneySharon, Dublin , 11 06 18

Sandyford is close to my workplace, so I had my root canal there. The clinic was impressive and I’m glad I chose them. It was value for money and the results were good. I can’t recall what I paid, but I think it was the price I’d seen on the website. I thought the staff was nice, friendly and efficient. I’ll be going back for a follow-up soon.
