What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Dental Crowns €700 - €950
A crown is a tooth-shaped cover placed over a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. A crown is made to look like your tooth. Many people call it a cap. Crowns may be placed for several reasons. Usually the tooth has been broken or damaged a great deal by decay. As a result, a filling cant replace enough of the tooth or make the tooth strong enough. A crown may hold together parts of a cracked tooth. It also can be used to hold a bridge in place. Crowns can be used to improve appearance as well. They may be placed to cover misshapen or badly discolored teeth. Crowns can be made ahead of time (prefabricated) or made to order in a laboratory. Prefabricated crowns are made of plastic or stainless steel. They can be used on a temporary basis until a permanent crown is made. Since a dental crown that has been cemented into place essentially becomes the new outer surface for the tooth, it is easy to imagine how the placement of a crown can restore a tooth to its original shape. Its also easy to see how a dental crown can help to strengthen a tooth by way of being a hard outer shell that encases the tooth structure that lies within it. For both of these reasons, dental crowns are routinely made for teeth that have broken, worn excessively, or else have had large portions destroyed by tooth decay. The dentist will prepare the tooth to the ideal shape for the crown. This will involve removing most of the outer surface, and leaving a strong inner core. The amount of the tooth removed will be the same as the thickness of the crown. For more information, see our CEREC restorations above.
Gold Crown
Some dental crowns are made entirely of metal. The classic metal dental crown is one made of gold, or more precisely a gold alloy. Over the decades a variety of different metal alloys have been used in making dental crowns. Some of these metals are silver in color rather than yellow like gold. Having a gold dental crown made can be an excellent choice. Here are some reasons why: Because of its physical properties, dentists find gold to be a very workable metal. This characteristic helps a dentist to be able to achieve a very precise fit with the crown.Since they are metal through and through, gold crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well. They will not chip. It would be uncharacteristic for a gold crown to break. Of all of the types of dental crowns, gold crowns probably have the greatest potential for lasting the longest.Although they are very strong, the wear rate of a gold crown is about the same as tooth enamel. This means that a gold dental crown wont create excessive wear on the teeth it opposes (the teeth it bites against).Metal dental crowns are usually placed on those teeth that are not overly visible when a person smiles (i.e., molars).

Dental Crowns €700 - €2000
Dental crowns are restorations that cover the whole surface of the tooth. Crowns are used to rebuild broken or excessively damaged teeth, and improve appearance. Crowns can be made from a metal (such as gold), or natural looking tooth coloured porcelain or sometimes, for strength and appearance, a combination of both.
Root canals €280 - €480
The soft tissue at the core of a tooth is called the pulp, made up of nerve, blood vessels and other tissue. Patients normally refer to this as the “nerve”. The health of the pulp can be damaged by deep decay, fracture of the tooth or trauma or even wear and tear over many years. If it is damaged sufficiently it can become very painful or develop an abscess. At this stage only root canal treatment will save the tooth. Root canal treatment involves removing damaged or dead nerves and blood vessels in the root of the tooth and cleaning and disinfecting the roots. The space left is then filled with a material that seals the tooth and keeps it functioning as before. However in many cases the teeth are weakened because there is no longer a living “nerve” or pulp in them and a crown is often advised to protect the teeth.
Dental Bridges from €700
A dental bridge is essentially a false tooth and is used to replace missing teeth. A bridge is attached to the two other teeth around the space – “bridging” them together. A bridge is ideal when the supporting teeth surrounding the gap are strong and healthy. Tax relief can be claimed on Bridges and crowns. €700 per unit

Village Dental Practice - Dr Liam Kane

Would definitely recommend this clinicSuzanne, Ireland, 30 06 22

I've visited Dr John Kane at Village Dental practice twice now - in February 2021 as an emergency dental appointment and then just yesterday as another emergency dental appointment. I'm a very nervous patient (despite having had plenty of dental work done over the years as a child to reduce overcrowding, etc) and both the receptionist on the phone at time of booking and arriving at the clinic, as well as the lovely dental nurses on both occasions and of course Dr John Kane, put me more at ease and were all very understanding of how I was feeling. Dr Kane took the time to explain the checks he was going to do, was very gentle and took his time about completing them and explained the X Ray thoroughly. Granted, I didn't have to have any work done on either occasion (sinus issues causing discomfort and pain in lower fully erupted wisdom tooth), but I know if I have to book a further appointment at any point in the future, it'll be Dr Kane that I'll be returning to. The chat at the end of the appointment about his own experience as a nervous patient before starting his training, was reassuring and the clinic appearance and smell etc was definitely more updated and comfortable than my childhood memories. I just need to rebook now for a scale and polish and get comfortable with returning to him on a regular basis!! Would definitely recommend Village Dental Clinic, especially for nervous patients that need that extra reassurance!
