What is a Dental X-Ray?

Dental X-rays are procedures where photographs of the teeth and mouth are taken to diagnose dental and oral disease or adverse dental conditions. An extensive examination of the patient’s mouth and teeth is done on the first visit to a dentist. This usually involves the use of X-rays. X-rays help dentists detect dental and oral problems that are not easily visible to the naked eye.

How is a Dental X-Ray performed?

Dental X-rays are either intra-oral or extra-oral. The film is placed outside the mouth and the image is taken for an extra-oral X-ray. The film is placed inside the mouth and the image is taken for an intra-oral X-ray. Depending on the machine used, patients may feel pressure on their cheek for a few moments when the dentist focuses the camera.

What does a Dental X-Ray show?

X-rays allow the dentist to see, bone loss, gum disease, dental infections, positioning of wisdom teeth, oral cysts or abscesses, tumours, jaw fractures and foreign objects in the mouth or teeth.

Are Dental X-Rays safe?

Dental X-rays are the safest among X-rays and patients are exposed to very little radiation. Dentists use digital X-rays that are less harmful than traditional X-rays. Patients should tell the dentist about any existing health condition or if they are pregnant.  The dentist will not use X-rays to risk the health of patients unless absolutely necessary.

What are the alternatives to taking a Dental X-Ray?

Alternatives to the dental X-ray include Cari vu, a diagnostic device using transillumination technology and the Diagnodent laser assisted diagnostic device.

The doctor is a gemLeonard, Ireland, 15 08 18

€85 for a molar filling. While Dr Ahmed Mahmond and the two other staff I spoke to were a pleasure. The practice is cramped and in need of a paint, this lets this practice look down. My treatment was interrupted twice by a nurse fetching supplies. The practice is outdated looking still Dr A is a gem, hence I will be back.

Pulled the teeth out. I am very happy with O'Neill Dental Care. Did not feel any pain at all! I had very bad experience with another dentist just a few days ago and I scared a lot. I really recommend O'Neill Dental Care and I am not scared anymore to visit them again.

Warm and caring staff that made sure I had an appointment right away.Kathryn, Bahamas, 01 08 16

I am visiting Ireland from the Bahamas, and I had a dental emergency. The staff at South Dublin Dental went out of their way to get me an urgent appointment. I was seen by Dr. Alec Granville. He spent a great deal of time trying to replace my crown that had fallen out, and did so in a way that made it completely pain-free. Unfortunately, since the tooth below had broken, it was impossible to do so. He thoroughly explained the pros and cons of the different options I would have for this tooth upon my return home. Warm and caring staff that made sure I had an appointment right away even though I am not a current patient and would not be returning to their practice as I am a visitor to Ireland.

It is a small clinic, so I felt like the staff were interested in me as a patientSanabel, Czech Republic, 17 09 18

I paid around 70 Euro for a check-up at this dentist. I’m not sure what other clinics are charging, but for a clean and a check, this seemed a bit expensive to me. That said, the service was great. I would recommend them. The clinic is clean and has everything you’d expect a clinic to have. It is a small clinic, so I felt like the staff were interested in me as a patient. I didn’t feel like I was just another number. They gave me all the attention I needed. It was a painless 25-minute check-up. The dentist was very skilled and knowledgeable. I thought he answered all my questions well and made some helpful product recommendations, too.

Very well run clinic with extremely helpful reception staffMaureen, Ireland, 14 10 16

Dr. Sarah Flannery is the best dentist I have ever been to. She is a very friendly, gentle perfectionist who pays great attention to detail. She has patiently restored all my broken and eroded front teeth with white fillings. Now I can smile. I have recommended her as a dentist for my grandchildren as children's dentistry is one of her specialities and I know that they would feel relaxed with her.. Very well run clinic with extremely helpful reception staff.

I fully trust them with any future work I need done.AnneMarie, carlow, 08 03 16

Had eight implants, a few crowns, and veneers. The whole journey took a while as this was huge job; two visits to Budapest, my choice, and lots and lots of fittings and check-ups as they make sure that everything is perfect. Am very satisfied with my new teeth; lost my fear of the dentist too! Absolutely brilliant clinic. Staff is friendly and very communicative about the treatments. Never had a dentist and nurse that were so patient and experts at their job. Budapest or Dublin both have excellent facilities; if you have treatments done in Budapest you can have your check-ups in Dublin, and believe me, they will make sure that you are 100% happy with the results. My journey wasn't an easy one, but their work ethics made it easier, and I fully trust them with any future work I need done.

A family practice that delivers superior service and careMrs_Ann, Ireland, 04 04 18

Super Dental Clinic. I am a regular - every six months patient but needed some urgent care after Easter weekend. Saw Vic today at 12.00. I had filling and X-rays taken of other teeth to rule out any further issues. Back in the office and eating lunch by 2 pm! Super service - Wendy and Rachel a pleasure to deal with. A family practice that delivers superior service and care. The overall experience was excellent.

The entire experience with them was greatCarol, Ireland, 27 03 17

I'm happy to say that this dentist knew what he was doing, they took care of me from my first appointment where I had to get new dentures and now recently I went for my denture adjustment. They are very good. The entire experience with them was great, their working space was clean, neat, organised, they were relatively cheap as well. I'm a happy customer.

Would have no hesitation in recommending this practiceGerry, Ireland, 23 09 14

Like most people I wouldn't be a fan of the dentist, so after hunting south Dublin I stumbled upon this one. Found Frank and his staff very professional and courteous, communicated everything very well and found his opening hours excellent. I required some periodontic work (which Frank doesn't do), which is a pity, as I would have liked to have stayed with him. Would have no hesitation in recommending this practice.
