What is Bad Breath?

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a condition where patients have a bad odour coming from their mouths. It may be a rare temporary condition or it may be a chronic on-going condition.

What causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath is usually caused by poor oral hygiene. The bacteria that forms between teeth when patients do not brush or floss regularly cause a bad smell. Garlic and other food with strong smells can contribute to halitosis. Smoking and some medications, including chemotherapy medications, cause halitosis. Patients who go on diets sometimes suffer halitosis and patients with a health condition called dry mouth, where the mouth does not produce sufficient saliva suffer halitosis.  Fear of flying or public speaking, etc, can also trigger halitosis.

How is Bad Breath treated?

Dentists or dental hygienists will professionally clean teeth to treat halitosis. They will also give patients correct dental hygiene instructions to stop bad breath. They will treat dental problems like gum diseases to stop bad breath.

How long does recovery take after receiving a treatment for Bad Breath?

The recovery from halitosis depends on the cause and method used to treat bad breath. Some patients feel pain or sensitivity after professional dental cleaning but should recover within a day.  Patients may take a week or two to recover from gum surgery. Patients with halitosis caused by smoking will recover a few weeks after ceasing smoking.

What after care is required after receiving a treatment for Bad Breath?

Patients should practice correct dental and oral hygiene. They should follow the advice of their dentist or hygienist correctly.

It was the best decision that I have ever madeChikeena, US, 05 10 23

BEST DECISION EVER From the time I had my initial phone consultation with Dr. Asenjo a year ago, I felt comfortable. He was extremely knowledgeable, passionate, & humble. Fast forward, Dr Asenjo did my implant surgery today (10/2/23). He removed 3 implants that had been placed in 2007 in the US and he placed 18 implants ( I was in a full denture). I am a dental phobic and needle phobic and I was extremely anxious and terrified of undergoing the procedure. Dr. Asenjo’s team assured me that i would be fine and that I would have minimal pain and discomfort. Never in my 51 years did I think that I could have 18 implants placed with NO PAIN!! I had absolutely NO PAIN during the surgery. I had mild discomfort afterwards & they gave me a pain pill under my tongue & I was good!! From the time I walked into the room, his entire team was waiting for me with open arms! They were very welcoming, knowledgeable, professional, & prepared. It instantly calmed me down. Then when I met Dr. Asenjo, I found him to be confident, professional, informative, patient, humble, compassionate, and EXTREMELY TALENTED!!! He has definitely mastered his craft and he has the dream team working alongside of him. Fun fact: His teammates are dentists too (not assistants). This spoke volumes to me about how he runs his practice and he’s a doctor of integrity & good character. I have to mention that one of the dentist’s that was there ( forgot to get her name) held & rubbed my hand during the entire surgery! I WILL NEVER FORGET HER OR HIM AND HIS AMAZING TEAM! I will never go to anyone else for my dental or my family’s dental needs. I traveled from Fl and it was the best decision that I have ever made! I get my permanents tomorrow but I could not wait to give this review because, I know that the experience I had today will be the same tomorrow! STELLAR DOCTOR & TEAM! I am definitely #TEAMASENJO! Thank you doctor Asenjo & team from turning my dream into a reality!
