What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is performed for dental procedures for anxious patients by administering medications to help them relax. Many patients avoid getting the required dental help because of their fear of the dentist. Sedation dentistry is performed to ensure that nervous patients enjoy healthy mouths and teeth.

What are the types of dental sedation?

The different types of dental sedation are; inhalation sedation, for patients requiring mild sedation also called anxiolysis; oral sedation, by asking patients to swallow a pill; TENS, using electrical impulses to numb the area; topical anaesthesia, using a swab to numb the area; or intra-venous sedation, for patients requiring moderate sedation and general anaesthesia for patients requiring deep sedation. General anaesthesia is used for patients only in a hospital and not in a dentist chair.

Is Sedation Dentistry painful?

Oral sedation, inhalation sedation, TENS and topical sedation are not painful. Intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia need to be injected and patients may feel pain when the sedative is injected.

When can I travel by air after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should travel by air two days after sedation dentistry. They should take the advice of their dentist before embarking on their journey.

How long does recovery after Sedation Dentistry take?

Recovery from dental sedation takes between 40 to 90 minutes. Recovery depends on the type of sedation administered.

What after care is required after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should rest for at least three hours after sedation dentistry. They should not eat for at least four hours, until the anaesthesia wears off. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should resume work at least one day after sedation dentistry. They should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least two days after sedation dentistry. They should follow all dietary prescriptions given by their dentist correctly.

Toothlessness and unfixed tooth replacements can cause problems while eating and speaking. It is common for those who wear dentures to lose their taste sensations (salty, sour, bitter, hot) as the taste buds are covered by denture adhesive. In addition, chewing can be difficult resulting in severe digestive problems. Dentures start to move after a while due to jaw bone loss. Moving dentures can cause bruising and sores in the mouth, making everyday life uncomfortable. Dental implants are very similar to natural teeth in function and appearance. Implants improve the ability to taste and chew, another reason why implants are an ideal replacement for missing teeth. Dental implants act as artificial roots, which have been inserted into the jaw bone to fuse together with the bone and are then loaded with crowns or a bridge to provide firm, stable teeth.

They were extremely accommodating and responsiveVictoria, US, 06 07 22

I had only a few days left in Costa Rica but wanted to get a couple of replacement mouth guards. I used the WhatClinic site and found that Prisma Dental had good reviews and was located nearby. They were extremely accommodating and responsive. I was able to get two new mouth guards (ready within the hour!) that exceeded my expectations. Thank you, Prisma Dental

I am very happy with all the work doneJiro, US, 20 10 23

From start to finish my experience with Costa Rica Dental Clinic Lab was wonderful! I was in need of a root canal and crown and the cost where I reside in the US was very high. My wife and I did some research and discovered CRDCL. I spoke with Geovanna about my situation and she was able to set appointments with the doctors despite my somewhat constrictive time constraints. I am very happy with all the work done. The root canal was successful and the crown fits perfectly with my other teeth. In addition, I was able to fill another cavity and get a deep cleaning with the hygienist. I love the flexibility and professionalism of all the staff. Everyone was super nice. Including all travel, accomodations and food the total cost came to a third of the price here in the US.

She was so great at explaining thingsDon, US, 12 02 24

I do not give 5 star reviews because I believe there is always ways to improve. I have finally met my match. Sonria Dental Clinic in Costa Rica is 5 stars. I am from Oregon and dental prices here are so expensive for all the crowns and bridges I needed, I could not afford them. From the time I started inquiries with Sonria about my dental situation in June 2023 until I visited their facility in January 2024, they were the most kind and professional group of professionals I have ever worked with. They had a driver (Ronald), pick me up from the airport upon arriving and take me to my one-month apartment in Escazu. Ronald took me to and from every appointment and would even stop if I needed to pick something up at the store. I never needed a car. The dentist Dr. Gonzales was the best, upon arrival the first time she explained to me how the entire process was going to work and during the entire dental procedure she never deviated from our schedule. She was so great at explaining things. Dr Gonzales husband managed the business and and they all treated my like family. I was never concerned or worried. In a year or two my wife needs dental work also and I assure you she will be going to Sonria Dental Clinic.

Great place, with great people, and the best dental work I’ve ever had doneAlex, US, 09 08 22

I have had extensive work done at this clinic, and I am extremely pleased with the results but also with the overall experience that I have had at the clinic. This is the most professional, knowledgeable, and talented team I have ever had the honor to meet. Based on my past work experience, I had the chance to visit over 60 dental offices in US alone. I must say, that none compared with the Cleo dental offices. Their equipment, rooms layout, gorgeous view of the mountains, that the customer can see from their dental chair, are just a few of the great things that made up for the great experience. The thing that amazed me the most was their knowledge of the mouth. I am quite challenging when it comes to local anesthetic, but Dr Castro, had figured it all out and managed to anesthetize me properly for the procedures. Their staff communication is stellar too, everyone was on the same page about me so I did not have to explain myself over and over, also, their approach to crowns and the execution of them is artistic and beautiful, I have never had more natural looking crowns, Dr Juliana is an absolute master of the implant craft. I got prepped for implants without any problems, and my areas healed properly in no time. There are not enough good things to say about them. A truly stellar group. I would not go anywhere else to take care of my teeth from now on, even if it involves flying and traveling to get to them. Great place, with great people, and the best dental work I’ve ever had done.
