About Bergin Psychological Services

Bergin Psychotherapy Services has been offering treatment to the public for the last 20 years. Located in the City centre  Dublin (just off Grafton Street), the Clinic is owned and managed by Senior Clinical  Psychotherapist Mr Zak Powers.

The majority of clients who present themselves for therapy have been referred by their G.P or psychiatrist, although the clinic  also accepts clients who have decided for themselves to attend for CBT therapy. (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive therapy seeks to help the client overcome difficulties by identifying and changing there thinking errors, behaviour, and emotions. This involves helping patients develop skills to change beliefs, identifying thinking errors and changing behaviours. Treatment is based on the collaboration between the client and the therapist. Once those thoughts have been challenged, your feelings are easier to change.

C.B.T is better researched than most other forms of therapy. It can defend its claims using research evidence and as a result it is gaining a real credibility  both within and outside the medical profession. Both individuals and couples are welcome to attend for treatment. We also cater for children and young adults in providing Play therapy. This research shows evidence that it can be helpful for the following sample list of problems.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

 Depression

Social phobias

Anxiety disorder

Panic attacks

Eating disorders
Drug addiction

 Sexual problems

Psychotherapy

CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive therapy seeks to help the client overcome difficulties by identifying and changing there thinking errors, behaviour, and emotions. This involves helping patients develop skills to change beliefs, identifying thinking errors and changing behaviours. Treatment is based the collaboration between the client and the therapist. Once those thoughts have been challenged, your feelings are easier to change.

I believe that most people can overcome any emotional disability by ‘Working harder’. So be prepared for some homework, as C.B.T does require you the client to record your progress and challenge your behaviour in between sessions.

But it’s not just about working harder; I will help you to ‘work clever’. The techniques of C.B.T will allow you to see your world from a new angle and this often brings relief and a new found ability to change behaviour that up until now, you may have felt would never change.

Zak Powers  Psychotherapist is based in wicklow Street Dublin 2.

As a practitioner of hypnotherapy, Zak Powers has used his skills of hypnosis and psychotherapy to produce the ideal approach to controlling stress and building self-esteem. Zak has worked as personal hypnotherapist to World Boxing Champion Steve Collins and has also treated 1000s of people who have championed their own personal battles. REMEMBER HYPNOSIS IS EASY

It is also one of the few complementary therapies that is practised by the medical profession. Controlling stress does not have to be hard work. This programme is designed to instill into your mind a new programme of thinking. It will
allow you to clear out your minds overload of stressful thoughts and enable you to think clearly. Once this sence of control and clarity has been achieved, Zak will build your confidence level to an all time high. This is easily accomplished using your imagination and Zaks renowned motivation techniques. YOU DO NOT NEED WILLPOWER

Willpower (or conscious determination) is one thing, but because it only uses one part of the mind, its effects are all temporary. Hypnosis operates at the sub-conscious level and uses all of your senses, which is the very foundation of emotional intelligence.

OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Treatment

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an illness that causes people to have unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and to repeat certain behaviours (compulsions) over and over again. We all have habits and routines in our daily lives, such as brushing our teeth before bed. However, for people with OCD, patterns of behaviour get in the way of their daily lives. Most people with OCD know that their obsessions and compulsions make no sense, but they cant ignore or stop them.

What are obsessions? Obsessions are ideas, images and impulses that run through the persons mind over and over again. A person with OCD doesnt want to have these thoughts and finds them disturbing, but he or she cant control them. Sometimes these thoughts come just once in a while and are only mildly annoying, other times, a person who has OCD will have obsessive thoughts all the time

.What are compulsions? Obsessive thoughts make people who have OCD feel nervous and afraid. They try to get rid of these feelings by performing certain behaviours according to "rules" that they make up for themselves. These behaviours are called compulsions. (Compulsive behaviours are sometimes also called rituals.)For example, a person who has OCD may have obsessive thoughts about germs. Because of these thoughts, the person may wash his or her hands repeatedly.Performing these behaviours usually only makes the nervous feelings go away for a short time. When the fear and nervousness return, the person who has OCD repeats the routine all over again

Some people treat their OCD with just cognitive therapy. Others use only medication while others choose to combine both. The following medicines are also often used to treat depression and include: clomipramine. These drugs can cause side effects such as dry mouth, nausea and drowsiness. Sometimes they also have sexual side effects. It may be several weeks before you see an improvement in your behaviour. Unde

Psychotherapist Consultation

What is psychotherapy? Psychotherapy is the treatment of psychological, emotional, or behavior disorders through the communications between the client and a therapist. The goal of therapy is to establish a central relationship of trust in which the client or patient can feel free to express personal thoughts and emotions and thus gain insight into his condition and generally share in the healing power of words. (Britannica) Will it work for me? Many people feel a great deal of benefit from psychotherapy, some even after comparatively few meetings. Like any other treatment or life experience, psychotherapy may not be suitable for everyone. Each individual has to make up their own mind about whether therapy is helpful for them. Clinical experience shows that if you are motivated and set yourself realistic goals, psychotherapy is likely to be of benefit. How long will it take? The length of treatment will be determined by what you are offered following assessment. How often are the sessions? Most psychotherapy is once weekly, although sometimes client’s circumstances won’t allow for this, so an alternative arrangement will be made. How long does each session last? Individual psychotherapy sessions normally last fifty minutes. How much does it cost? A one on one session costs E85.00. What benefit should I feel afterwards? Research has shown that psychotherapy is effective in reducing symptoms, improving relationships and self esteem. However, as each person is an individual it is difficult to generalize at the beginning as to which benefits a person may feel. The exploration and the journey is often as important as the goal. Does it usually work? A great deal of research has been done which shows C.B.T to be effective. However, it only works as a catalyst with the person undergoing treatment. This means that in order for therapy to be effective, the "work" is not done to you - but by you and with you.Can I stop if I feel its not working? It is always possible to leav

Weight Loss Consultation

“If you are currently trying to lose weight, then do your mind and body a favour and throw away the weighing scales. It’s not empowering and it does not create motivation and it does not keep you on track. In fact it makes you a prisoner in your own body. Instead lets

Reshape your mind and you will naturally reshape your body.

Hypnosis is the ideal tool with which to change the shape of your mind and body. Hypnosis Uses your emotional intelligence. It enables you to derive pleasure from eating less. With the help of your hypnotherapy programme you will be amazed at the ease with which you lose weight.

My hypnotic suggestions will help you to derive pleasure from eating less food. With this programme you are encouraged to reduce the quantity of everything, but to cut out nothing. In other word you can still have your treats, just not as often. During your 12 week programme you will learn how to respond to hunger signals and begin to understand the difference between ‘needing food’ and ‘wanting to Eat’.

There is no avoiding the fact that exercise is a vital part of losing weight. I will teach you how to have a naturally motivated ability to perform regular gentle fitness which will fit into your busy life.

Remember

YOU DO NOT NEED STRONG WILLPOWER

Willpower (or conscious determination) is one thing, but because it only uses one part of the mind, its effects are all temporary. Hypnosis operates at the sub-conscious level and uses all of your senses, which is the very foundation of emotional intelligence. This allows you to lose your unwanted weight without dieting and stop obsessing about food.

Depression - Alternative Treatment

Depression is a type of illness that affects the body in a mental and physical way. It can lower self esteem and the way a person conducts themselves. Many people think that anyone with depression, can ‘just get over it if they want’ but it is not so simple. Depression is an illness. Like many other illnesses, it needs to be treated before things can get better. Nowadays, there is much help at hand for sufferers. There are many known causes of depression. The depression can be psychological, making the person have a low mood and constantly worried and/or upset. It can also affect your mood as it affects the hormones which control your feelings and moods.Mood swings are associated with some types of depression and it is the hormonal imbalance which can lead to depression. These hormonal imbalances can be triggered by an unhappy event. Sometimes, depression is thought to be genetic, especially if there is a history of depression in the family. But usually, it is the genes combined with other environmental factors which can lead to the depression. It is known that women often suffer from depression more than men. His can be aided due to the different hormone levels a women experiences at different stages such as menstrual cycles, pregnancy, menopause and other similar bodily changes. Depression can stem from other illnesses such as an under active thyroid, a stroke or diabetes. Usually, it is caused from the sheer stress of having one of these illnesses or other similar illnesses. Depression can be a side effect of some prescription medicines. It could also stem from lifestyle such as lack of exercise and poor sleeping patterns. These things on there own are not healthy and by adding depression on top will not lead to happiness. Other life changes such as change of address, job change, financial problems or a relationship break up can lead to depression. There are many different types of depressive conditions, some will require medication while others may be treatabl

Eating Disorders - Alternative Treatment

Stop Smoking - Alternative Treatment

My smoking cessation programme involves three visits to see. Your first session is consultation and preparation. I will explain how the programme works and start you on your preparations to quit smoking. This will involve cutting down your intake and making other changes to your smoking pattern.

The following session is your quit day. You will have your last cigarette before you see me and then you will experience your one on one hypnotherapy session. Once that is complete you will leave with a copy of the hypnosis session on C.D which you will listen to once a day for about a week to ten days. Your follow up appointment will then be scheduled.

The best way to describe the importance of the repeated listening to the recording is to compare it to an anti-biotic. You do not expect the anti-biotic to make you better when you take the first dose. You take it for the prescribed period with your health returning at the end of the medication. The C.D works in the same manner. Listen to it for the prescribed period of time to maximise your chances of long term smoke freedom.

The programme includes a one year back up programme. Quite simply if you have any problems over the following 12 month period you are welcome to come back and see me at no extra charge. Hypnotherapy is widely acknowledged as one of the most effective methods to achieving ‘Smoke Freedom’
