What is it?Originating in Polynesia, Lomi Lomi Massage (also known as Aloha or Kahuna massage) is a complete healing system which aims to restore harmony and balance within the body, mind and spirit. The word Lomi means to massage; Lomi Lomi means to massage with intention. This is one of the most important principles behind this beautiful bodywork as the practitioner always works on the body with love, nurturing and healing in mind. Hawaiians have always had a deep connection with nature, in particular with the ocean, and this connection is echoed in Lomi Lomi as the practitioner performs long, continuous, sweeping strokes over the body reminiscent of the ebb and flow of the ocean’s waves. These strokes, performed fluidly and rhythmically with both the hands and forearms, work gently and deeply into the muscles releasing tension, as well as on the blood and lymphatic systems making it a powerful, detoxifying massage. They are also designed to help the body let go of old memories, beliefs and behavioural patterns which, in Hawaiian culture, are believed to be stored in every cell of our bodies. These ideas and thoughts can prevent us from living our lives to their true potential and are capable of causing just as much stress and strain on the body as muscle tension.
