My mum looks beautiful with her new teethVictoria, US, 26 09 21Best Decision We’ve Ever Made
My mum, 75 years old, got her full mouth implants supported dentures at Dentics. We couldn’t be happier with the result.
Alex from Dentics is our go to guy. He answered all our questions, arranged everything for us, and saw us through from beginning to end. We really like Alex and feel he really cared for us.
Dentics is located on the third floor of a souvenir mall. Because of the COVID pandemic, the mall felt deserted. To make things worse, the elevator was broken when we visited. Don’t let the location misguide you though. Once inside Dentics, you will find the place clean, bright, and very professional.
On our first day at the clinic on our first trip, my mum was put under and Dr. Sanchez installed the implants (screws) into her bones. (My mum had already had all her teeth extracted in the U.S. over a year ago). When my mum woke up and was reoriented, I went to see her. She looked tired but otherwise fine. She pointed to the two female doctors in the room and said in Chinese to me “they are so incredibly nice!”
After the first day, we went back several more times to do more checkups, as well as being fitted with temporary dentures. I got to stay in the room as my mum’s English is limited. I could see that they really knew what they were doing and everything just felt very right, even though I could understand a word of what they were saying among themselves.
My mum was given quite a regime of medication during this time. Some antibiotics, some pain relief, and something to reduce swollenness.
The first few weeks after we came back was probably the toughest for our entire implant experience. My mum felt quite some pain. As instructed by Dentics, I gave her over the counter Ibuprofen, but our dosage was more toward the upper limits. After about a month, my mum’s wounds were completely healed and there was no more pain. Alex told my mum to take calcium supplements to help bone growth.
My mum did not wear the temporary dentures much, which is a pity. It created some difficulties later on.
After 6 long months, we went on our second trip. The first day of treatment was the longest for the second trip. This time it was Dr. Rivera who performed on my mum. They exposed the top of the implants and attach connectors (abutments) to them. Surprisingly, there was not much pain and my mum did not even take any pain relief.
The doctors told me they would make temporary teeth and try them on until everyone was happy with them, then they would make the permanent teeth. The next 5 days, it’s us going back trying on prototypes and them making adjustments. Two female doctors, Dr. Arias and Dr. Reyes, were extremely dedicated to my mum. They never showed any signs of fatigue standing on their feet, drilling, checking, taking X-ray pictures, etc. I thought they would make one prototype, but they ended up making three prototypes. Because my mum did not wear the temporary dentures as instructed, her lower jaw moved a bit too far forward, which made getting her bite just right tricky. So the doctors talked back and forth with the technicians who design and make the prototypes trying to compensate for that. I would say my mum and I were aiming for good enough, but they were aiming for perfection.
Finally, we were ready for the permanent teeth. It was a long, meticulous process to get the permanent teeth on. Doctors Arias and Reyes and the nurses just worked and worked and worked.
When they were done, my mum looked beautiful with her new teeth. I would say she could do a toothpaste commercial! I was happy we chose the hue of the teeth that was called “natural”, so it’s not blindingly white. Considering my mum’s age, I think an even yellower hue would be OK, but my mum was really happy with the color of her teeth and that’s what counted. More importantly, she could eat pretty much everything right away. Martin told us to start slow, maybe only food with medium hardiness first. For lunch, for the first time in almost two years, my mum could eat roast chicken and crusted fried fish. That evening, she ate a salad for the first time in almost two years. On the flight back to the U.S., my mum ate the whole bag of pretzels the flight attendant handed out. Dentics has given my mum’s life back!
Now back in the U.S. my mum has no pain, no discomfort. She can eat anything (not to chew on ice, of course). I could not hear any difference in her speech although she says she feels different and is still getting used to speaking with the new teeth. We have been warned about biting on lips and cheeks but my mum does not have that problem (only bit herself two times total and that’s in the first two days after getting the permanent teeth). She loves how she looks and is turning once again into the social butterfly she truly is.
