What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

Rating from 9 Reviews Excellence of the dental workMike, Saskatchewan, 26 Feb 13

15 Dental Crowns, 7 implants, fillings, 2 periodontal surgeries, root canal, inlay My husband and I are more than happy with our trip to see Dr. Marcela Ramirez. It was the best decision we could have made. It was quite stressful trying to decide if this was the right thing to do. We sent x-rays to and got estimates from many dentists in Cancun and Costa Rica. Dr. Ramirez took the time to explain the process and the cost to us, which eased our anxieties. We knew that we would need implants and we had done some research; we found that Dr. Ramirez gave us the best advice and we appreciated the fact that she was not willing to compromise the excellence of the dental work. The work we received was superior to any we have had before. She used the best diagnostic tools and products. The antithetic she used was amazing: we felt no pain, the freezing stayed only in the location of the work and left quickly after the work was done. The CT scan was very important and is not something that all dentists use. With it we were able to see the exact condition of the teeth, gums and bone. Mike had severe bone loss and had extensive work done: periodontal surgeries, crowns, implants, bone graft, fillings etc. We could have never afforded this work at home, in fact, at home his options were to pull the teeth and wear dentures. Dr. Ramirez plan was to prevent further bone loss; pulling his teeth would have resulted in the loss of the bone he had left and ruined his mouth. Not only did we get the best dental care and education, but we also made a wonderful friend. She showed us around and took great care of us while in Cancun. We stayed in her beautiful guest house, which was very helpful to us, saving on the cost of travel. Dr. Ramirez saved our teeth and we cannot express how grateful we are. Thank-you Marcela!

Rating from 1 Review I was impressed with his professionalism and knowledgeMonika, Mexico, 09 Nov 17

Dr. Alberto Guevara is amazing! Had my root canals done, crowns, filling replacements, tooth whitening, veneers and implant were done. I am waiting for the second implant to finish. I was impressed with his professionalism and knowledge. I moved from NYC to Cancun years ago and finding a good and clean dental clinic with great professionalism was a kind of task. After checking a couple clinics that didn't look anything like what I was used to in the US finally I came across Excellence and had all my dental done there! Also in the US, I could never afford all of that amazing dental work. I am impressed with Dr. Guevara's professionalism and passion for what he does. He never stops educating himself! Also, he is honest and never tells you to do extra work or crown over your good tooth so he can make extra money (which happened to me in NYC) Totally recommendable!! Excellent.

Rating from 2 Reviews Wouldn't think of going anywhere elseCarla, Cape Coral, 22 Jun 16

I had been for a check up with a dentist in Fort Myers Florida and was informed that I needed Root canal - a crown on that tooth - 11 fillings - treatment for gingivitis and a deep clean - I was quoted $6,500 USD. So I went looking for an alternative. Dentalia - Cancun quoted me $1.500 UDS for the same work When I had my consult with Dr Luis he informed me that I only needed 8 fillings and that I didn't have gingivitis. Reducing the cost of Treatment. So the Plan was Tuesday I would have the root canal and post fitted and the fillings on the right side of my mouth. I arrived at noon, I had a 90 min break after the root canal and was finished at 5. the whole experience was fine, no different to any other dentist. ( I have had treatment in the USA and in the UK) I went Back on Friday at 4pm (they are open until 8 on a Friday) to have the crown fitted - the crown looks great and feels very natural in my mouth. I also had the other 6 fillings done. I was told to expect a 3 hour treatment, but the work was completed in 2 1/2 hours. With Mexico being so close and for the significant saving I don't know why everyone does not travel to Mexico for treatment. . I found great reviews about WhatClinic so I started looking and sent inquiries to dentists in Cancun. I had a few reply But I had done some research and already liked the sound and look of Dentalia. I also liked that it was located in a good plaza, There was a Sam's Club, Walmart, Starbucks. So I knew it wasn't a backstreet dentist before I started, which I was quite cautious of. Beatriz was quick to respond and straight away put me at ease, because lets be honest its quite a scary thing having dental work done, but to travel to a country where I don't speak the language to have it done is even more scary. But I'm so glad I did, Beatriz was great from the beginning very helpful and I sent ALOT of emails. she was always quick to respond and they bent over backwards to help me out (this was all planned with them in less than a week) They fitted me in at short notice. and explained in detail what would happen on each of my visits. When I arrived for my first visit I was pleased with everything I saw, everything was clean, and modern and well looked after, all of the staff were welcoming, and as I didn't speak Spanish they all communicated as much as possible in English. (which really is good as I should have been speaking their language while in their country) Dr Erica performed my Root canal and Dr Luis the rest of the work. Both were great. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and I'm sure I wouldn't have got it no matter where I went. In fact we are planning another trip to get work done on my husbands teeth (he needs lots more than I did) and wouldn't think of going anywhere else.

Grupo Odontológico, Puerto Morelos - Dental Clinic in Mexico

Rating from 1 Review Very professional treatment and care and all in less than 18 hoursKate, Mexico, 18 Dec 17

Dr. Carlos Escalante saw me on short notice to repair a partial for my two front teeth which had snapped in two. The temporary partial (aka ‘flipper) is needed while the two implants I had done in Canada are healing. Dr. Escalante also had a mouth guard with two false teeth created so I can carry on with traveling throughout Mexico and Central America. Now I don’t have to worry about the partial breaking again and the bonus is it is much more comfortable. He took great care to ensure the implants would not be compromised. Very professional treatment and care and all in less than 18 hours. Reviews on Friends of Puerto Morelos FB were all positive. I’m another very satisfied patient. If I’m ever told I need another implant I will not hesitate in booking a long stay visit to Puerto Morelos to see Dr. Escanlante.
