What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

I saw the results for their work in just one week, I was completely overwhelmedChristopher, US, 08 02 20

I have only written one or two reviews in my life (one was a negative experience with a kayaking company in South Africa). I am doing this review because I have been totally blown away with an experience at Cancun Dental Specialists just last week. It may sound dumb, but I want as many people to hear about this as possible. I start with an experience three years ago. I went to a dentist in Salt Lake City that specializes in All-on-Four fixed dentures. My teeth were a mess and I wanted to get a professional consultation. The oral surgeon did all the Xray stuff and then sat me down for his expert opinion. Great news, he could help me and recommended a fixed denture, All-on-Four procedure. The cost: $45,000! Needless to say, I quickly lost any interest. Somehow I had heard of dental tourism. My first thought was, "Dental work in Mexico? Really?" I probed deeper into the subject. The more I researched the topic the more I found satisfied patients, excellent reviews and what appeared to be professional clinics in Mexico. Moreover, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association said on NPR that there are many fine dentists in Mexico, but, like anything else, you have to do your homework to get to the right people. I looked at clinics in Tijuana, Algodones, Costa Rica and Cancun. I became very interested in Cancun Dental Specialists for several reasons: The clinic owner did her advanced dental studies in restorative dentistry at the University of Michigan (one of the top three dental schools in the U.S.). I spoke or electronically communicated to several people who had gone there and questioned them about their experience - everyone had good things to say -The dentists have excellent credentials with continuing education in the USA and lots of experience under their belt -They had state of the art equipment, their own lab that worked 24/7 -They are the largest user in all Mexico of Nobel Biocare implant hardware -They all speak good English -Dental coordinators pull it all together, hassle-free -English-speaking drivers to transport you to and from appointments and the airport -The pricing was jaw-dropping low (pun intended) They seemed to have all the right ingredients for me to pull the trigger and let them do my dental work. I called and spoke with a dental coordinator and we set an appointment. And, I had never been to Cancun and had heard nothing but great things about the beaches and the water! Important: After my 3D scan/x-ray, I met with Dr Lugo, the clinic's oral surgeon. He told me I was not a candidate for an All-on-Four procedure. I had excellent roots and strong bone structure. Quite the opposite of the U.S. "professional" three years ago. Instead, they recommended a Full Mouth Restoration. This would mean more work and less money for them than an All-on-Four. I call my trip to Cancun, "The Agony and the Ecstasy." I hate being in any dental chair - USA or Cancun! It is agony. However, when I saw the results for their work in just one week, I was completely overwhelmed. It was pure ecstasy! And the price? 40% of what I would have paid in the United States. Check out the "Before and After" shots. Cancun Dental Specialists is legitimate. I am spreading the word to all my family and friends. Cancun is safe, the work is professional, and, the price tag is lower than whale dung at the bottom of the ocean! (Note: You might see this on other review platforms because I am determined to get the news out to the many people in the United States and Canada that desperately need serious dental work, but cannot afford the astronomical price tag.) I'll say that again I'm super pleased with the resultsRon, US, 21 04 23

Hello, I called Cancun dental design about a year ago. I called them and at least four other dentist offices in Cancun. the first person I spoke with at the facility was Sergio. He was knowledgeable, thorough and would not tell me what I wanted to hear. Meaning he would not make blind predictions of the outcome without my mouth being looked at by the doctor along with a 3D x-ray. He calmly informed me that their professional and we know what we're doing basically. And he stuck to that and I appreciated that. His professionalism and sincerity is the main reason I chose this facility. I'm in sales so I know when somebody's trying to pull one over on me and he was sincere. So I decided to make the appointment like a year later it took me a little while to pull the trigger. I initially wanted the all in 4 implants. I was just tired of my teeth I wanted to rip them out and just get some new ones. But after the evaluation with Dr. Zamora he informed that I have the option of keeping the teeth I had left except two I think. He Said to me clearly that it's best to keep as many good teeth as possible. He let me know that I will need a variety of crowns implants a bridge bone graft etc and he let me know I can do this for about the same price as the all-in-4 implant. My first thought was why would they tell me this if they can make quicker money with it all in 4 implant. The answer I came up with is that they actually care. There was another specialist in the office who did my root canals, I didn't get her name and also the doctor's assistant Gema were there in the room me. So I started asking everyone questions, we had a little pow-wow to help me make this decision. After thinking about it I decided to go with the option of keeping the good teeth that I had. But they didn't force my decision in either direction. They were honest with me and that's all I can ask for. Mind you I'm terrified of the dentist. But the team made me feel comfortable and they started the work and made sure I wasn't in any pain. There was a little pain and discomfort but I'm thinking it's kind of normal since they working in my mouth right but it wasn't unbearable at all. One of my procedures I opted to go under anesthesia applied by a specialist and it was fine. I've never seen a doctor and assistant work so well together. Dr Samora is a professional focused genius artist, his crown work amongst other things is amazing. And his assistant Gema is a professional third eye she is extremely thorough and meticulous she kind of reminded me of my older sister. I'm not easily impressed coming from a customer service background but I was impressed with the whole team. The ladies at the front desk who take care of the patients clerical things and the transportation, Jazzmin and Laura we're very pleasant sharp and on point. Then I worked with the finance guy Benjamin. He went over the bill with me line by line and there were no hitting fees it was great. Now how good is their work?? I am super pleased with the results. I'll say that again I'm super pleased with the results. I would recommend my children to this dentist office. Some people might think that since this office is located in Mexico that they may not have the ability to perform sophisticated procedures correctly nor would they have the expensive equipment that is needed. This is absolutely false they had all of the technical equipment they needed to preform the procedure and are clearly educated enough to do the work. And their pleasant attitude tops everything off. I wrote this review because good work should be recognized. I must add Dr Zamora was extremely patient with me I was nervous and I'm picky, probably not the best combination for a dentist to have to deal with. Sergio Gema Jazzmin Laura Benjamin their root canal specialist and their drivers were all great, no BS. So I'm happy with the work and I had an opportunity to take a vacation at the same time. It was great!!
