What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is performed for dental procedures for anxious patients by administering medications to help them relax. Many patients avoid getting the required dental help because of their fear of the dentist. Sedation dentistry is performed to ensure that nervous patients enjoy healthy mouths and teeth.

What are the types of dental sedation?

The different types of dental sedation are; inhalation sedation, for patients requiring mild sedation also called anxiolysis; oral sedation, by asking patients to swallow a pill; TENS, using electrical impulses to numb the area; topical anaesthesia, using a swab to numb the area; or intra-venous sedation, for patients requiring moderate sedation and general anaesthesia for patients requiring deep sedation. General anaesthesia is used for patients only in a hospital and not in a dentist chair.

Is Sedation Dentistry painful?

Oral sedation, inhalation sedation, TENS and topical sedation are not painful. Intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia need to be injected and patients may feel pain when the sedative is injected.

When can I travel by air after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should travel by air two days after sedation dentistry. They should take the advice of their dentist before embarking on their journey.

How long does recovery after Sedation Dentistry take?

Recovery from dental sedation takes between 40 to 90 minutes. Recovery depends on the type of sedation administered.

What after care is required after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should rest for at least three hours after sedation dentistry. They should not eat for at least four hours, until the anaesthesia wears off. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should resume work at least one day after sedation dentistry. They should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least two days after sedation dentistry. They should follow all dietary prescriptions given by their dentist correctly.

Dental Implants
A dental implant is an artificial tooth that is surgically placed into your jawbone The benefit of using implants is that they don't rely on neighboring teeth for support, they are permanent and stable. Implants are a good solution to tooth loss because they look and feel like natural teeth. Implant material is made from different types of metallic and bone-like ceramic materials that are compatible with body tissue.

Sedation for dental treatments €80 - €220
Many patients are apprehensive about visiting the dentist; in fact it is very often the reason why they may not have been in a very long time. If the sight of needles, and the smells, sounds and tastes associated with many dental procedures make you very nervous, then sedation dentistry might be of benefit to you.. At Crescent Dental Clinic we offer both intravenous and inhalation sedation.  Intravenous sedation used to create a carefully controlled, dream like state of deep relaxation for the entire duration of your dental procedure. Inhalation sedation can be used for both adult and pediatric patients to provide anxiety relief for the duration of treatment without deep sedation. Dr Robert Wallace holds a postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation for the University of Newcastle , with experience of over 10 years in this field.

Dental Crowns €500 - €850
*At Crescent Dental our preference is to recommend either all porcelain crowns or porcelain bonded to white gold crowns, both of which are of the highest quality and longest lasting. On occasion a tooth may have significant damage which can not be repaired using a filling. As we recommended retaining the natural tooth where possible a patient can consider the option of crowning a tooth. This involves placing a crown over the damaged tooth. There are many different types of crowns and at Crescent Dental our preference is to recommended either all porcelain crowns or porcelain bonded to white gold crowns, both of which are of the highest quality and longest lasting. All crowns look like natural teeth once complete and are matched to your own dentition. If a tooth has been previously root treated it is often necessary to increase the strength of the tooth by placing a fitting called a post and core in the tooth. These posts improve the strenght and durability of the restored tooth. It is our policy to use laboratory fabricated white gold posts for the best clinical results.
