In the broadest sense, periodontal disease can be considered any form of disease affecting the periodontium - the tissues that surround and support the teeth. Inflammation of the bone is called periodontitis. The periodontium also includes the gums (or gingiva), the bone of the tooth socket, and the periodontal ligament - a thin layer of connective tissue that holds the tooth in its socket and acts as a cushion between tooth and bone. Inflammation or infection of the gums is called gingivitis. If allowed to progress, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis, the invasion and destruction of the underlying bone that anchors the teeth in place. As that happens, the gums may recede, exposing the root surfaces and increasing sensitivity to heat and cold. Teeth may even loosen because of bone destruction. In the earlier stages of the disease, most of the treatment involves root planing and curettage (cleaning) under the gum margins. It involves the removal of plaque and inflamed soft tissue in the pockets around the tooth with an instrument called a curette. Its purpose is to remove the bacterial colonies and the mechanical and chemical irritants that cause inflammation in hopes that the disease can be eradicated. The goal is that the gum will reattach itself to the tooth or will shrink enough to eliminate the pocket.In most early cases, root planing, curettage, and proper daily plaque removal are all that are required for a satisfactory result.

--per implant--- A dental implant is a "root" device, usually made of titanium, used in dentistry to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth. The first stage of implantation requires the implantologist to assess factors (eg. bone levels, medical conditions) which will decide whether the patient is a good candidate for implants (assessed with panoramic x-rays).If implants are viable, the implantologist will proceed to insert the implant/s into the jaw/s, suture(stitch) the area/s up and the patient will be re-called for a check-up appointment +- 6 months later. These 6 months are vital because the bone fuses to the implant giving it the best support/strength, the soft tissue (gums) are also healed in the area of implantation and the sutures keep the implants free of bacteria. The next stage is started whereby the patient returns after the +- 6 months and the crown/s (the visible part of the tooth) are prepared which will be constructed at a dental lab by dental technicians. The dentist will place temporary crowns on the implant/s abutments (the extension that protrudes out of the gum where the crowns will be fixed to the implant) so that the patient will have use of that area, the implants will be protected and for aesthetic appeal. The patient will then be re-called and the final permanent crowns will be placed.Please note: if you have many teeth missing in an area, this will normally not require you to have implants for every single tooth. For single or double tooth loss in one area-you will need individual implants but 3 or more in one area will require less implants.

Periodontitis is an inflammation around the root of the tooth. It is typical for teeth without a nerve after treatment or when the nerve of the tooth has being self-destroyed. The symptoms are strong and severe pain especially when the tooth is pressed. The tooth is being felt as if higher than the others. The treatment has to be done in the dental surgery only. The tooth has to be opened and medication placed. The extraction might be necessary if the inflammation hasnt succumbed.
