Sclerotherapy for the treatment of varicose veins involves the use of a sclerosant (a substance which seals up blood vessels when injected) and has been used for many years to treat small varicose veins. Over recent years a technique has been developed which allows sclerotherapy to be used to treat larger varicose veins (up to 1cm in diameter). This involves mixing the sclerosant with air bubbles to create a foam. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the skin and using ultrasound scanning, a small amount of foam is injected into the vein being treated. Following the procedure a bandage and stocking are sited on the leg which need to remain in place for around 1 week. The stocking should be worn for a further week after the bandage is removed. Some patients require a second injection for residual veins after a period of 3 to 4 weeks. Most patients are able to return to their normal routine immediately following foam sclerotherapy treatment for varicose veins. Complications are unusual but include bruising or discomfort around the needle site, phlebitis, a small area of skin discoloration overlying the vein and rarely, ulceration. Thread veins occur as a result of problems in the circulatory system. Healthy veins continually direct blood towards the heart through a series of one-way valves. Occasionally, these valves may break down or malfunction, allowing blood to pool in the vein. This causes the vein to bulge and twist until it becomes noticeable on the surface of the skin. While there is no one sure cause of thread veins, several lifestyle and biological factors may contribute to them: Drinking alcohol excessively Smoking Trauma to the skin or extremities Excessive temperature changes Hormonal changes due to pregnancy or menopause Normal ageing Genetic predisposition

Thread veins are small dilated blood vessels. They are extremely common and particularly likely to develop in patients with varicose veins or a history of thrombosis or pregnancy. The problem often runs in families. Thread veins can be both unsightly and uncomfortable.  At Shropshire Skin Clinic we treat thread veins on the legs with microsclerotherapy,  intense pulsed light or laser. A combination of these may be used to achieve the optimum result.

IPL is an excellent treatment to reduce both the irregular pigmentation and dilated blood vessels seen in ageing skin particularly on the face and neck. This treatment is called photorejuvenation and often referred to as a fotofacial or photofacial.

Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias or angioectasias, are small, dilated blood vessels. The affected vessels appear like thin red or blue lines on the surface of the skin and look like spider webs or tree branches. Anyone can suffer with spider veins, and they can appear on any part of the body but mostly affect the legs. Although harmless, they can cause distress as the sufferer often feels self-conscious, particularly if the veins are on an exposed part of the body, such as the legs, which people can see. Micro-Sclerotherapy effectively treats spider veins. It’s often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins. The procedure can also improve related symptoms such as aching, swelling, burning and night cramps. Micro-Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein that causes it to scar and collapse, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades.
