What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

You can tell they work well together and genuinely care about the people they serveCarlota, US, 21 02 26

I had a wonderful experience with Emma’s staff at the dental office. From the moment I walked in, everyone was welcoming, kind, and professional. The front desk team made check-in smooth and stress-free, and the dental assistants were gentle, attentive, and explained everything clearly. They truly go above and beyond to make patients feel comfortable and cared for. You can tell they work well together and genuinely care about the people they serve. It’s not always easy to feel relaxed at the dentist, but Emma’s staff made the whole visit pleasant and reassuring.

The surgery went smoothlyDenise, US, 26 03 26

I was amazed at how quickly we were able to get an appointment. Extremely professional and caring staff. The office manager is very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had or consulted with the Dr. if she was unsure. My husband was provided with a detailed plan and costs before committing to full mouth implants. The surgery went smoothly. Temporaries fit/look great. Home the next day with needed antibiotics, pain medications and post-surgery care instructions. Jessie even helped with our parking dilemma as we had no pesos for the meters.

A dental implant stimulates the bone the same way a natural tooth root would and prevents this underlying bone from degenerating.  Today, almost all dental implant surfaces are made of titanium because of its suitability for fusing to the bone. Dental implants properly placed by good restorative dentists allow for implant crowns to be placed over them which look completely like real, natural teeth.  There must be enough bone left to allow tooth replacement with a dental implant.  Clinical dental studies show that the success rate is 95% or higher for dental implants and once installed, dental implants can last your entire life.

Your dentist uses root canal treatment to find the cause and then treat problems of the tooth's soft core (the dental pulp). Years ago, teeth with diseased or injured pulps were removed. Today, root canal treatment has given dentists a safe way of saving teeth. The pulp is the soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. It lies within the tooth and extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the root in the bone of the jaws. When the pulp is diseased or injured and can't repair itself, it dies. The most common cause of pulp death is a cracked tooth or a deep cavity. Both of these problems can let germs (bacteria) enter the pulp. Germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. Left without treatment, pus builds up at the root tip, in the jawbone, forming a "pus-pocket" called an abscess. An abscess can cause damage to the bone around the teeth. When the infected pulp is not removed, pain and swelling can result. Certain byproducts of the infection can injure your jaw bones. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed. Treatment often involves from one to three visits. During treatment, your general dentist or endodontist (a dentist who specializes in problems of the pulp) removes the diseased pulp. The pulp chamber and root canal's) of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed.
