What are Metal Braces?

Metal Braces are orthodontic appliances made of stainless steel or titanium. They are suitable for patients of all ages. They are the cheapest among braces and are considered the most effective. Once fitted, metal braces exert pressure on the tooth to move it to the correct position.  Orthodontists adjust the wires of metal braces at every appointment to make sure that the tooth moves correctly. It takes about one to three hours to fit metal braces.

Is having Metal Braces fitted painful?

How are Metal Braces fitted?

The orthodontist will polish the teeth and paint the front surfaces with glue. The metal brackets will be pasted onto the teeth. A curing light is focused to fix the brackets. The orthodontist will thread a wire through the brackets and then place wires around the brackets to hold them in place.  

What care is required after fitting Metal Braces?

Patients should practice proper dental hygiene and brush and floss their teeth correctly. Patients should use fluoride toothpaste. They should not eat hard or chewy food items that will damage their braces. Patients should attend their orthodontist appointments to ensure the correct fianl position of the teeth is achieved.

These traditional braces use standard brackets and the provider has to manually bend each wire to try and achieve a particular result. There are many appointments where braces are taken off and put back on in different positions and many wire changes. The insignia brackets are all custom made and the wires are custom bent to exact specifications so there is very little time wasted and perfect results are achieved many months faster.What does that mean for you? What are the types of orthodontic treatments? Braces – Traditional metal or modern ceramic brackets are attached to each tooth and an archwire is threaded through. The constant pressure exerted on the teeth and bones by the wire will gradually move the teeth in to the desired position. Elastic bands are stretched between the upper and lower braces if additional force is required to move the teeth. Clear aligners – Clear aligners such as the Invisalign, can be used to correct many misalignment and crowding issues without the discomfort and appearance of metal braces and wires. Clear aligners need to be worn continuously except during eating and with time will apply gradual pressure on teeth and bones to move them into the desired position. Plates – Plates are small plastic devices that can be used in the mouth to push teeth in to the desired position or hold them in place. Unlike traditional braces which are attached to the teeth, plates can be taken in and out of the mouth.
