What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial screws made of titanium or zirconium oxide that connect the jawbone and a dental restoration like a crown or denture. They are also called ‘endosseous’ implants or fixtures. They are an artificial tooth root. Once implanted, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone like part of the body. Dental surgeons perform bone grafting procedures to hold the implant in place for patients who do not have enough surrounding bone structure, or graft bone to help connect implants to the maxillary sinuses on either side of the nose when placing dental implants in the upper jaw.

How long does it take to fit a Dental Implant?

The time taken for inserting dental implants depends on the bone structure and needs of each individual patient. Some implant procedures take about 15 minutes while others may take up to two hours. Implant procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. Intravenous sedation is used for the comfort of anxious patients.

How long does it take to recover after getting a Dental Implant?

Recovery time after a dental implant procedure may take four to six weeks or up to 12 weeks for some patients. Patients can travel one day after the insertion of a single dental implant. Patients who require multiple dental implants or supporting surgical procedures should wait for around two weeks before travelling. They should meet the dental surgeon to get a certification of being fit to travel before embarking on their journey.

What should I do after getting a Dental Implant?

Patients should rest and avoid exertion after surgery. They should also avoid vigorously brushing their teeth or rinsing their mouth.

What are the alternatives to Dental Implants?

Alternatives to dental implants include fixed bridges and dentures.

Smile Quest Dentists

Rating from 6 Reviews He really knew what he was doing, and this reassured my decision to have implants done hereAli, Melbourne , 20 Feb 18

The staff at Smile Quest were very nice, but it was the knowledgeable dentist who ultimately made me choose this clinic. He really knew what he was doing, and this reassured my decision to have implants done here. The atmosphere of the place is warm and inviting. It was easy for me to relax and I enjoyed my time at this clinic. I actually paid less for the implant than the price I found online and it would be hard to find a cheaper place offering this service in Melbourne. The best part of the experience was probably the end results. The dentist knew exactly what I wanted and he was able to deliver these results.

Rating from 4 Reviews Couldn't be happier with my all on foursAmy, Australia, 19 Oct 15

Loved Loved Loved, had my new set of all on fours placed and couldn't be happier. Walked out feel 10 years younger and they look amazing. The whole process was easy and only took around 3 months. The staff are kind and helpfully and ready to answer any questions. I chose this clinic for the price of dental implants, I diffidently received more then I ever could of asked for. I could not recommend them more highly. I will be back for all mine and my families dental treatment.

Rating from 3 Reviews This dentist is hard to beat, on all levelsKane, Australia, 07 Aug 17

WOW! Fantastic service, price and treatment. Dr. Helen's hard to beat, on all levels. Brilliant, I haven't got enough good words to say about Dr. Helen.

Very friendly and genuine.Sylvia, Australia, 13 Jul 15

I was very nervous but Helen was fantastic as was the receptionist. Very friendly and genuine. I had a tooth abscess that was so painful. We have had the first stage of root canal, and will require a crown. I already have a filling in this tooth. I had a few clinics contact me but this one seemed more personable than the others, like they really cared about what was happening and were very considerate of my position and what was going on. They asked a lot of questions regarding my concerns and tried to address them the best way they could. Helen called the next day to see how I was, and thank God she did as it turned out I needed stronger antibiotics which she organised for me through my local chemist. She is fabulous! Thank you so much Dr. Helen!

Dr. John McHugh

(02) 5300 2806 1 Warwick Street Penrith, Penrith, 2750
Rating from 35 Reviews The staff were very thoughtful and obligingBert, Australia, 14 Sep 16

I had 2 implants in the lower jaw following failed implants from the Philippines. The failed implants were due to the Filipino Dentist only placing mini-implants, presumably to save money. I was not informed of the pros and cons of mini-implants versus standard ones. On the other hand Dr McHugh, thoroughly explained the pros and cons of procedures and the relative merits of various implants from overseas suppliers. He also gave a number of options outlining the costs of each. The procedure was a relative short appointment - about 1 hour. All care was taken and there was only a minimum of pain. There was a willingness to pause procedure or give laughing gas if required. After care was very thorough and although it is only 2 weeks since the procedure I can give a 4 star rating. When the follow up is completed and assessed I would be willing to change the rating. The staff was also very thoughtful and obliging.

Rating from 2 Reviews professional and understandingBeth, Brisbane, 15 Jun 16

I needed a tooth extraction. Called for an appointment and they offered me a spot that day. When i arrived and they reviewed my xray it showed i also required 2 fillings to be done as decay had gotten into 2 other teeth. Decided to do all 3 treatments at the same time as my healthfund (MBP) covered it so i was not out of pocket. I was pretty nervous as i had never had a tooth extracted before. The dentist was very professional and understanding and explained all procedures thoroughlty to me before performing them and during them also. When I called the clinic to ask some questions regarding after treatment care, he was very efficient in returning my call and answering my queiries and said not to hesitate to call him anytime i needed. His staff were very friendly and professional. I have now switched to this clinic and will be going here for all my future dental needs and highly recommend them to anyone.

Dickson Park Dental Surgery

FRating from 1 Review Following Fillings, Teeth Cleaning and Fluoride Therapy I would definitely recommend this clinicHelen, Australia, 06 Sep 16

I had two urgent fillings and then booked in the following week for a new patient package, which included an x-ray, clean and fluoride treatment. I now have a plan for the next 6 months and a great dentist. Having been to two appointments now at Dickson Park Dental Surgery I've found myself actively recommending it to others. The appointments started on schedule (no waiting around for half an hour), the prices were clearly explained and comparable (possibly slightly cheaper) than my old dentist and the team were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable without being preachy. The availability of appointments originally drew me to the clinic (my old dentist had a waiting time of about 6 months). When I rang to book my appointment Rose (one of the admin team) was friendly and I found the same when I arrived the following day. Based at Dickson, parking is easy. The dentist (Dr. Lucille Pereira) was kind (despite my poor dental health and the need for 2 fillings) and made me feel like there were easy things I could do to take better care of my teeth without being in trouble (floss, limit sugar to meal times etc). She explained everything as she went and by the time I left I was happy to have a new dentist. Their rates are competitive but it's their service that has made me recommend them (several times in the last two weeks) to friends and family.

Pain free fillingsKendra, Australia, 26 Sep 15

I enquired about a consultation and they fit me in the next day. Over the next few days I had my treatment. Pain free and amazing. Treatment wasn't expensive either. Very good prices. I got 4 fillings and a clean and I cost me under 900$. The clinic is brand new, it was only 2 days old when I visited. Very clean and sterile. All staff were so friendly and helpful. Dr Thien was amazing. I highly recommend this clinic. They also provide free consultations which is great!

Divine Smiles

Rating from 6 Reviews Going to the dentist less daunting and more enjoyableJames, Australia, 25 Nov 16

I required 3 implants including a bone graft, Dr Dass was so gentle and explained the procedures as he went, turned out to be a very good experience not what I was expecting. My mouth is now the best its been in years. The admin staff and dentists Dr Das and Dr Chandra made going to the dentist less daunting and more enjoyable.

He is a magicianRalph, Australia, 07 Jun 17

As a 70 year old I have visited a lot of dentists in my time, most of whom scare the living daylights out of me, however, I have never been anywhere like Divine Smiles. Divine is the word! As one enters one is greeted by 2 young ladies, Chantelle & Zoe, who are only too happy to be of assistance and make you feel at home immediately. I then had to see the Dental Hygienist, Alanna, who is the most gentile hygienist that I have ever met and again makes you feel welcome and relaxed. Later on, I had to see Dr. Das himself whom I swear is a magician! He worked on my mouth with absolute professionalism and yet again no pain. The whole experience was a delight and I have no qualms about recommending Divine Smiles to all my friends' and associates.
