Breast augmentation, or mammoplasty, surgically enhances the size and shape of the breasts. Breast augmentation is a tremendous help to patients who desire a fuller profile, who have lost breast volume because of pregnancy or nursing, or who have undergone breast reconstruction and want to restore a more natural look. Augmentation mammoplasty, or breast augmentation, is a surgical procedure to increase the size, shape or fullness of a woman’s breasts. Dr. O’Brien places silicone, saline or alternative composite breast implants under the chest muscles or breast tissue.

The breast augmentation procedure itself takes about 1 to 2 hours to perform. You will then be in the recovery area for another 2 hours. Once you have recovered from the effects of anesthesia, you will be allowed to go home, but it is imperative that a responsible adult accompany you. You will feel discomfort after the surgery, and we recommend that you take the pain medication as prescribed. You will also be given antibiotics to take for 5 days. Your bandages should remain on until you are seen again in the office, usually 2 to 3 days following surgery. At that time you will be asked to wear a support bra or sports bra for a period of 4 weeks. You should not wear a push-up bra or bras with underwires, as these may displace the implants. When you are able to tolerate it, you should begin daily breast massages; this will help over time to keep the implants soft and to settle in their final position. In the first few weeks after breast augmentation surgery, the implants will appear unusually high. This is normal, and with time the swelling will subside and the implants will settle into proper position.

This surgery may be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. All surgery is done at Dr. Payne's MediCare and California state certified Pueblo Nuevo Surgery Center located within his office. Incision options include placement beneath the NAC (periareolar), at the bottom of the breast (IMC=inframmary incision), in the armpit (trans-axillary), or through the belly button (TUBA=trans-umbilical breast augmentation). The patient may choose a saline implant or a silicone implant. These implants have either smooth or textured outer shells and come in a variety of sizes and shapes including round implants versus shaped implants. The breast implant may be placed under the breast (subglandular) or under the muscle (partial subpectoral) depending on individual patient anatomy and preference. The final choices regarding incisions, implant location within the breast, type and size of the implants to be used will be determined for each patient as a result of an extensive conversation with Dr. Payne prior to surgery. Additionally, each patient’s results are customized to fit their particular set of circumstances in the operating room on the day of surgery. Dr. Payne will discuss this with you in great detail prior to surgery.
