1. Metals used in crowns include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium) or a base-metal alloy (for example, nickel or chromium). Compared with other crown types, less tooth structure needs to be removed with metal crowns, and tooth wear to opposing teeth is kept to a minimum. Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down. Also, metal crowns rarely chip or break. The metallic color is the main drawback. Metal crowns are a good choice for out-of-sight molars. 2. Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be color matched to your adjacent teeth (unlike the metallic crowns). However, more wearing to the opposing teeth occurs with this crown type compared with metal or resin crowns. The crowns porcelain portion can also chip or break off. Next to all-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look most like normal teeth. However, sometimes the metal underlying the crowns porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth. 3. All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns provide the best natural color match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. However, they are not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and they wear down opposing teeth a little more than metal or resin crowns. All-ceramic crowns are a good choice for front teeth.

There are several reasons why one might want to have a tooth crowned. One common indication is where there is substantial tooth missing, either from an accident or from decay. A cap has the ability to hold a weak tooth together so that it can withstand the constant work of chewing. Where remaining tooth is weak, cracked, or just unable to hold a filling, a cap may be indicated.Similarly, when teeth have had root canals they become weaker and more brittle. If they are at risk for fracturing, they should be strengthened with a crown. This can happen when there are large fillings or fractured areas on the root canal tooth. There are some teeth that should always be crowned after a root canal, even if there are not large fillings present. These are molars with multiple roots, where the tooth after finished root canal will be thin between the roots and susceptible to cracking in half.

Veneers are wafer thin lamintates or shells of tooth coloured material (which can be either porcelain, ceramic or composite bonding material) that are “cemented” to the front surface of teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance. Many dentists use the analogy that dental veneers are for your teeth what false finger nails are for your hands. In a similar manner to how false finger nails are placed or glued to your existing fingernails, veneers are bonded to the front of your existing teeth.

A crown is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface, restoring it to its original shape and size.A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that can not be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates)  are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.
