What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

I am beyond happy with my resultsSamantha, UK, 12 03 24

My treatment at Dentistry on the square included 3 dental implants, some composite bonding along with whitening. Having dental implants isn't the simplest of treatments but I can honestly say that because of the vast knowledge and professionalism of Jamie Kerr and Jamie Kinnell I felt totally at ease. At each step of my treatment, I was informed of what was happening and why. I was never in doubt I had made the right decision to get my treatment at DOTS. Both Jamie Kerr and Jamie Kinnell are perfectionists and you can see it in their work and the passion they have for their profession. Every member of the team is an asset to the practice and I am beyond happy with my results. Thank you DOTS'.

Dental Crowns
A dental crown is an artificial replacement tooth which has a similar colour to your natural teeth. They are available in a range of materials which includes gold, ceramic and the traditional porcelain fused to metal crown. The main advantage of a dental crown is that they hide the signs of a damaged or decayed tooth as well as maintaining the tooth’s current function. Crowns last for many years and are very strong and resilient. At Dentistry On The Square we offer a range of dental crowns to suit your needs.
PFM Crown
Porcelain fused to metal crowns (or PFM crowns) is a procedure whereby a metal alloy is attached to your tooth. Porcelain is then fused to the metal to create a very strong and long lasting crown. Because porcelain is used to create the outer part of the crown, the appearance is natural and the colour is very similar to that of your existing teeth. These crowns are strong enough to withstand heavy biting force, and at the same time can have an excellent cosmetic appearance.

Everything is explained thoroughly and he takes his time, making sure you feel comfortableMorag, UK, 17 09 22

Fantastic dentist! After years of dealing with bad dentists resulting in a phobia of dental treatments, I'm so grateful to have found this dental practice! Nikolaos is always so patient and attentive and is excellent with very nervous patients like myself. Everything is explained thoroughly and he takes his time, making sure you feel comfortable throughout. The practice manager is also lovely and empathetic and helpful. Very highly recommended and definitely deserving of 5*!
