Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are false teeth, which are anchored onto neighbouring teeth in order to replace one or more missing teeth. The false tooth is known as a pontic and is fused in between two crowns that serve as anchors by attaching to the teeth on each side of the false tooth, thereby bridging them together. There are three main types of dental bridges: Traditional fixed bridge- This is the most commonly used type of bridge and consists of a pontic fused between two porcelain crowns that are anchored on neighbouring teeth or implants. The pontic is usually made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. These are fixed and cannot be removed. Resin-bonded bridges or Maryland-bonded bridges- These are chosen when the gap to be filled is in between the front teeth, or when the teeth on either side of the missing tooth are strong and healthy without large fillings. The false tooth is made of plastic and is fused to metal bands that are bonded to the adjacent teeth using resin that is hidden from view. Cantilever bridges -These are opted for in areas such as the front teeth that are susceptible to lower stress. Cantilever bridges are used when there are teeth present on only one side of the space, where the false tooth is anchored to one or more adjacent teeth on one side.

Dental Implants

Implants are titanium cylinders with a surface with a screw, which is placed in the jawbone. The implant is made of commercially pure titanium, a metal that integrates with the patients bone and is fixed to it strongly. Now we have several types of implants for each different situation, allowing us to treat more and more people and fit the final prosthesis in less time, in most cases in one hour or one day. Most implants are sometimes placed under local anesthesia, without general anesthesia. Depending on the patient, this procedure can be carried out under a conscious sedation. A sterile field to prevent infection is prepared before the surgery. More frequently we fit the implants without any incision to the gum and no stitches. Then an incision of less than 4 mm in diameter is made and the dental implant is placed inside the bone. Finally a screw is fixed to the implant or provisional prosthesis.

Orthodontics in adults must be extremely careful, we cannot count on growth capacity and excessive force can harm gums, bone and roots. The basic indication for this type of orthodontics is the prevention of dental crowding, since it originates a reduction of supporting bone and tooth loss over the years. The goal of this treatment is to conserve the pieces healthy until the end of life. In some cases, conventional treatments are not enough and we must resort to surgical orthodontics. With these patients, we perform an orthodontic treatment before and after surgery. With surgery, we can corrects large bone defects that cannot be solved otherwise. Having well-aligned teeth allows for a proper chewing of food, and helps having a good digestion, eliminates a propensity to bruxism, so the teeth do not wear out as fast, teeth that are well placed contact all at once, avoiding overloading, which may cause muscle pain and often headache and earache, it is easier to maintain good hygiene when teeth are properly aligned. The visible and smooth surfaces of the teeth can be properly cleaned with a brush and the contact points between teeth with dental floss or an interproximal brush, poorly aligned and crowded teeth originate decay and gum problems, the best way to achieve a lasting good dental aesthetics is to have well-aligned teeth, with less plaque (food) there are fewer chances of having cavities.

Veneers are wafer-thin lamintates or shells of tooth-coloured material (which can be either porcelain, ceramic or composite bonding material). They are “cemented” to the front surface of teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance. Many dentists use the analogy that dental veneers are for your teeth what false fingernails are for your hands. There are a wide variety of reasons why patients opt for treatment with dental veneers: Stained teeth - badly stained teeth that cannot be improved by teeth whitening or prophyflex treatments can be greatly improved by dental veneers, which function to cover any existing stains on your teeth. Damaged teeth - teeth that have become badly worn through excessive grinding or by carbonated drinks, as well as those that have been chipped or broken, can benefit from veneers. A small chip on a tooth can quickly be repaired with composite bonding, also knows as "composite veneers". A single damaged tooth can easily be repaired with a porcelain veneer that has the same characteristics and colour as you natural teeth. Gaps - spaces or gaps (diastimas) between your teeth can easily be closed using dental veneers, giving you a more uniform-looking smile. For teeth that are not severely crooked, veneers placed over their front surface will give a straight and perfectly aligned-looking smile. For this type of treatment, many people refer to veneers as "instant orthodontics", as you get a similar end result in a fraction of the time.
