What are Damon Braces?

The Damon system of braces uses a new method for straightening teeth. They are called self-ligating braces. They are fixed braces that do not use elastic bands to secure the wire woven through brackets like conventional braces. They use a metal clip or a door to secure the wire. The clip or door uses a sliding mechanism to open and close and keep the wire secure. The number of orthodontic appointments are fewer and the length of time to adjust Damon braces is shorter. They straighten teeth faster. It takes about one hour to fit Damon braces for patients.  Patient of all ages can wear Damon braces and they offer metal and clear brackets.

How long should I wear Damon Braces?

Damon braces take six months to two years to straighten teeth.

Is fitting Damon Braces painful?

Fitting Damon braces is not painful. Patients will feel uncomfortable for a few days or a week till they get used to wearing Damon braces. The braces are low friction appliances and the pressure exerted is not uncomfortable.

Damon braces are based on one of the modern technologies in orthodontics called ‘self-ligation’. For this reason, they are also referred to as ‘Self Ligating Braces’. Unlike classic braces, Damon brackets do not require ligatures or small bands that are usually used to keep the archwires in place. They offer a lower-friction solution for teeth straightening. The Damon brackets use a "sliding-door" technology that allows the wire to slide back and forth inside the bracket causing less friction. Therefore they are considered more comfortable for the patient than the other types of dental braces. Also, Damon brackets offer faster orthodontic treatment time and a smaller number of adjustments.

Treatment with self-ligating braces. Self-ligating braces are defined as "a [dental] brace, which utilizes a permanently installed, moveable component to entrap the archwire"One of the most significant differences from conventional dental braces is the absence of elastic ligature (bands or ties). Self-ligating braces typically are smaller and more aesthetic since a metal door is required to hold wires in place (this prevents "invisible" or clear options of these braces, with the exception of 3M Unitek who have devised a hybrid bracket called the "Smartclip"). They also tend to stand off the teeth further toward the lips and cheeks. The ties on this type of brace are used to hold the archwire in place.  The self-ligating braces use a slide mechanism to hold the archwire, thus reducing the amount of pressure exerted on the teeth. However, there are many similarities to typical braces, such as the fitting on such appliances; self-ligating braces are glued onto the teeth and are not removable until treatment is complete. Regular cleaning is also essential for effective treatment and desirable results.
