Medical X-Ray  
Various types of imaging technique are available. In most cases an MRI scan of the knee is most appropriate. Some cases will need plain x-rays and special x-ray techniques such as CT scans. Ultrasound scans are also useful in some cases and your consultant will advise you which form of imaging technique is appropriate in your case.
Knee Replacement  
The term knee replacement is much less than it sounds. There are various types of knee replacement but most of them involve a resurfacing procedure in which a skim of bone is removed from the upper part of the shin bone (tibia) and lower part of the thigh bone (femur). The surface is then replaced using a metal on plastic bearing.
Knee Arthroscopic Washout  
This refers to washing out the knee joint through small incisions 5 to 10 mm long. An arthroscope (fibre-optic telescope) is inserted into the joint through one incision and very dilute salty water is washed through the knee to remove unwanted material from inside the joint. It has been used as a treatment for arthritis, however a washout on its own has not been found effective and it is usually combined with other procedures such as removal of loose bodies or trimming of a torn cartialge.
